Chapter 407: Fake Promises
Chapter 407: Chapter 407: Fake Promises
Joel soon realized that although he had soldiers on his side, their numbers were steadily thinning.
The sharp cries of combat echoed through the cave, mingling with the metallic scent of blood and damp stone. His expression shifted subtly, tension flickering across his face before excitement surged into his eyes.
"This really is a good opportunity," he muttered under his breath, his voice trembling with barely contained greed. "This SiIvy base... it’s truly something."
Ten bodyguards, summoned on the spot, and they were still holding on even against more than twenty of his own elites. That alone proved how capable they were.
His thoughts spiraled wildly, fantasizing about the days to come, the privileges, the food, the control.
’If I take over SiIvy base... no, if I dismantle her piece by piece,’ he thought feverishly, ’then everything she has will be mine.’
His gaze drifted toward Ivy almost involuntarily.
The more he watched her fight, the more satisfied he became. Her movements were sharp, relentless, filled with a feral resolve that sent a shiver down his spine.
’Perfect,’ he decided, his lips curling faintly. ’She’s the best experimental subject I’ve ever seen.’
Just as that thought settled, Ivy finished dealing with the bodyguard in front of her. Without wasting even a heartbeat, she lunged straight toward Joel.
Joel had anticipated this. Though he was primarily a researcher and information broker, he had never allowed himself to become defenseless.
And fate, or perhaps something darker, had always favored him. The power he possessed was teleportation.
The moment Ivy closed in, Joel vanished without hesitation, reappearing several meters away.
Ivy saw this and let out a low chuckle, her voice cold and mocking. "At this rate, you’ll be crying very soon."
The next instant, she vanished from her spot as well.
Joel froze. His pupils shrank as disbelief slammed into him. ’How is this possible?’ Everything he knew about Ivy flashed through his mind.
Enhanced intelligence, strategic brilliance, unusual abilities... but invisibility? Teleportation? None of that had ever been confirmed.
’If she could teleport, my informant would have reported it,’ he reasoned frantically. Then another memory surfaced, something he had dismissed before. The rumors. The whispers. Ivy’s supposed ability to predict the future.
’Ridiculous,’ he had always thought. After all, she had come to their base willingly in the past, without showing even a trace of suspicion. If she truly saw the future, how could she have walked into such hell?
But now, staring at the empty space where Ivy had stood, a cold dread wrapped around his heart. ’Something’s wrong. Very wrong.’
The terrifying possibility struck him hard. ’What if she already saw this? What if she came prepared?’
Fear crept into his bones, slow and suffocating. For the first time, retreat crossed his mind. He began to step back, his breath uneven, when suddenly...
A brutal kick struck his back.
Joel crashed to the ground with a startled grunt. He rolled over and saw a female bodyguard standing there, her eyes blazing with fury. Humiliation burned through him like acid.
He had never shown such feelings before, never allowed them to surface, but he personally looks down on women.
"You... " he growled, his voice thick with rage, his dignity feeling trampled simply because the kick had come from a woman.
Before he could finish, another kick landed, this time from behind. His body slammed into the ground again, painfully awkward.
The next second, his hair was yanked back mercilessly. His head was smashed against the cold, hard ground again and again.
The impact rang through his skull, sparks bursting behind his eyes as he began to beg incoherently, his voice breaking into desperate pleas.
Ivy stood over him, her grip relentless. Somewhere deep inside, she knew she should stop. But she didn’t want to accept it. The cruelty burning within her had long become part of who she was.
’You dared to scheme against me,’ she thought coldly, her hands never pausing. ’You dared to touch my fate, my body, my life.’
She smashed his head again. And again.
’What’s inside that twisted brain of yours?’ her thoughts raged. ’Loo water? Dirty sludge? How else could you harbor such filth?’
No one stopped her. Around them, the fight continued as others intercepted the approaching bodyguards, ensuring no one interfered.
When Joel finally went limp, unconscious, Ivy straightened. Her chest rose and fell steadily as she spoke without hesitation, "Arrest them. Hannah. Arthur. And him."
She dragged Joel by his hair across the ground. A muffled groan escaped his lips, but Ivy ignored it completely. Compared to what he had done to her in her previous life, this was nothing.
’In this life,’ she vowed silently, ’I’ll teach you what it means to beg for mercy... and never receive it.’
As for Damien, Ivy knew he wasn’t here. If he were, he would have fled or hidden the moment chaos erupted. Searching for him now would be pointless.
As Hannah, Arthur, and Joel were hauled toward Ivy’s car, they began shouting in panic. Joel remained eerily quiet, mostly because Ivy was still dragging him by his hair.
The pain made his body tremble, but she showed no reaction. Without hesitation, she shoved him into the vehicle.
Once she ensured they were securely tied, Ivy climbed into the front seat.
The adrenaline faded, exhaustion washing over her like a tide. Her eyelids grew heavy, and before she realized it, she slipped into sleep.
Darkness swallowed her.
The next moment, Ivy found herself back in her previous life. The world around her was pitch black, so absolute that it felt suffocating. It was the time she had fallen into a coma, her mind shattered by despair, her body refusing to respond to reality.
’I just want to die,’ she remembered thinking faintly.
Then, a gentle voice echoed through the darkness. "You don’t need to worry. You’ll be rescued soon."
She didn’t respond. She had heard such lies too many times. Hope had withered long ago.
But the voice spoke again, soft and reassuring. "As proof, I’ll show you what I look like."
