Chapter 619: Checkup

Chapter 619: Chapter 619: Checkup

"What’s wrong?" he asked quickly. "Do you feel nauseous? Is something hurting?"

Ember shook her head slowly. "No... none of that."

She hesitated before adding, "I want to go for another check-up."

Jay blinked. "Again?"

"Just... think of it as confirming everything," she said quietly. "That there’s really nothing that can be done."

Jay studied her face for a moment, then nodded. "Alright."

...................

At the hospital, the familiar sterile smell returned, sharp and clinical.

Jay already knew what to expect. Or so he thought.

When the report was handed to him, his fingers tightened around the paper. His eyes scanned the lines once... then again.

"This... this ..."

His voice faltered. The results were completely different.

Where there had once been danger, now there was improvement... a significant one.

Ember leaned closer, her eyes racing across the report, and in the next instant, her entire face lit up. ’It’s real... it wasn’t a dream ...’

A surge of excitement filled her chest so suddenly that she almost laughed out loud.

She grabbed Jay’s sleeve lightly. "I’m sleepy," she murmured. "Can we go back?"

Jay nodded quickly, still dazed. Without hesitation, he lifted her into his arms.

’Maybe... this is a miracle,’ he thought, hope blooming cautiously in his chest. ’Maybe... I can keep both of them.’

..................

Back at the apartment, Ember fell asleep almost instantly. And once again... She found herself in that dream.

The cloaked figure stood there, unchanged, its presence just as heavy as before.

This time, however, Ember stepped forward eagerly, her eyes shining with hope. "Tell me everything," she said quickly. "I want my baby to be born safely."

The figure tilted its head slightly. "I can do that," it replied. "But you must do something for me."

Ember’s excitement dimmed just a little. Suspicion crept in. "What do you want?"

The figure’s voice dropped. "I want blood."

Ember blinked, then let out a small breath. "That’s it? I have plenty..."

But the next words froze her completely. "I want Ivy’s blood."

The air seemed to grow colder.

"As long as you bring me five hundred milliliters of her blood... I will heal your child completely. I will heal your body as well."

Ember’s eyes widened instantly, her body instinctively stepping back. "Who... are you?" she asked, her voice trembling slightly.

Even though she tried to stay composed, it was clear now...she understood something was wrong.

The figure chuckled softly. "That doesn’t matter," it said. "I only need it to create an antidote."

Ember’s lips pressed into a thin line. Even in her desperation... There was a limit.

"Ivy is off-limits," she said firmly, her voice steadier now. "If you want an antidote, go buy one. It’s not like they aren’t available."

She narrowed her eyes slightly. "You already have the means."

The figure paused. "I cannot... due to distance."

Ember let out a short, cold laugh. "Then how exactly are you planning to collect five hundred milliliters of her blood?" she shot back immediately.

The figure fell silent. Just for a second. But it was enough. Ember’s unease deepened.

Then... The figure chuckled again, this time darker. "Since you refuse the easy way ..."

Its voice turned cold. "Then forget about your child."

Ember’s breath caught. "You can’t..."

Before she could finish...she woke up. Her eyes snapped open, confusion flooding her mind...

And then... Pain. A sharp, tearing pain erupted from her stomach, so sudden and intense that she let out a scream.

"Ahh!"

Her body curled instinctively, cold sweat breaking out across her skin as her breaths turned ragged.

Outside, Jay had just returned with food. The moment he heard her scream, everything in his hands dropped.

"Ember!"

He rushed inside, his heart pounding violently in his chest. What he saw...made his blood run cold.

Ember was trembling, her face pale, her body soaked in sweat.

He rushed to her side, pulling her into his arms. "What’s happening?" he asked urgently. "What’s wrong?"

"It hurts..." Ember gasped, her voice breaking. "It hurts so much ..."

Her fingers clutched at his shirt as her breathing grew erratic.

Jay felt as if something had stabbed straight through his heart.

"I’ll be right back," he said quickly, his voice shaking despite himself.

He ran. Desperation pushed him forward as he rushed to find Alana.

Within minutes, she arrived. A soft glow spread from her hands as she released waves of healing energy, the air around them shimmering faintly.

But... It barely helped.

Jay’s fear deepened. "What’s going on?" he demanded, his voice cracking. "Why is she like this?"

Ember’s eyes fluttered open weakly.

And then...a voice whispered inside her mind. Drink Ivy’s blood... and you will be fine.

Her lips trembled instantly. ’I can’t ...’

But another thought followed. ’If I don’t... will my baby...?’

Fear gripped her heart. Jay noticed it immediately.

Something was wrong.

He dropped to his knees in front of her, grabbing her trembling hands. "Ember," he said urgently, his voice firm despite the panic in his eyes. "Tell me what’s happening."

He leaned closer, his gaze locking onto hers. "If you don’t tell me... you might die here."

Ember shook her head again and again, her breath coming out in broken gasps, her fingers clutching at the bedsheet as if it were the only thing anchoring her to reality.

Jay could see it...the hesitation, the fear, the truth she was trying to hide.

He tightened his grip on her hands, his voice trembling yet firm. "Ember... for the baby’s sake... or at least for your own... tell me the truth."

His eyes burned as he leaned closer, desperation spilling through every word. "I can’t live without you," he whispered hoarsely. "If you even think about dying... then I’ll die with you."

Those words struck her like a blow. Ember froze.

Her mind went blank for a moment before something inside her cracked open.

’He... really means it ...’

This wasn’t the calm, composed Jay she had been arguing with. This wasn’t the man who seemed cold and logical just moments ago.

This was someone... terrified. Terrified of losing her.
