Chapter 635: Threat
Chapter 635: Chapter 635: Threat
"Get me out of here."
But nothing changed. And eventually, he died.
A flicker of guilt passed through her chest.
But before it could settle, Kate’s voice exploded.
"You heartless girl!" she shouted, her voice trembling with rage and grief. "You didn’t even think of informing us! You’re living comfortably here while your brother..."
Her words broke, but the anger did not.
"How can you be so cruel? How can you be such a villain?"
Her breathing became uneven as tears streamed down her face. "People like you... empty vessels pretending to be good while doing whatever they want!"
Angelina’s eyes darkened.
"For you to call me that..." she muttered, her voice low yet dangerous. "Do you even know what Arthur tried to do?"
Kate froze for a second before her eyes filled with tears again. "I know," she whispered, her voice cracking.
"I know he followed Hannah’s orders... but does that mean he deserved to die?"
Her voice rose again as she broke down, sobbing uncontrollably.
Marcus, on the other hand, was consumed by fury. His chest heaved violently as he suddenly lifted his leg and lunged forward, aiming a kick at Angelina.
But she moved. Swift and precise.
She stepped aside effortlessly, his attack missing completely, and then she looked at him with cold indifference.
"If you dare to touch me," she said quietly, "I’ll have the guards deal with you."
The guards, who had been standing at a distance, immediately stepped forward.
Marcus hesitated. Kate’s breath caught. They both took a step back.
Yet the anger in their hearts refused to die.
Kate pointed a trembling finger at Angelina, her voice filled with bitterness. "If you feel even a little regret... even a little shame... how are you going to compensate your brother?"
Angelina blinked, momentarily stunned.
"Compensate...?" she repeated, her voice almost hollow. "How do you compensate someone who’s already dead?"
Her brows furrowed as frustration crept into her tone.
"It’s not like I abandoned him! I visited him; I tried to get him out, but when it became impossible, I had no choice!"
Kate’s expression twisted with rage as she prepared to shout again, but Angelina cut her off sharply.
"And what about you?" she demanded, her voice rising for the first time.
"Did you even try to get him out yourselves? Or did you just dump all your hopes on me without thinking for even a second about how difficult it was for me?"
Her chest rose and fell rapidly as she continued, her words hitting like blows.
"Yes, I failed. But don’t act like you ever understood what I went through!"
Marcus’s eyes narrowed, and a cold, mocking laugh escaped his lips.
"Daughters..." he sneered. "They are always the most ungrateful."
Kate wiped her tears roughly before speaking again, her voice filled with resentment.
"We tried to get him out! But we couldn’t even enter the base because of documentation issues!"
For a moment, silence fell again.
Then, Angelina laughed.
"Now you understand," she said, her eyes glinting with a harsh light. "Now you know just how difficult it is to even step inside this place."
When they had assigned her the task back then, they had carried themselves with such arrogance, such blind privilege.
"Did you even know," she began, her voice low yet trembling with restrained anger, "how long I had racked my brain before I was let in?"
Kate glanced at her, her brows furrowing slightly as if she felt a flicker of discomfort, but it vanished just as quickly.
Angelina’s lips curled faintly, though there was no warmth in her expression.
"But I don’t care anymore," she continued, her tone turning distant.
"I’m here now because I want to live my own life. You can forget about controlling me."
With that, she turned toward the gate. "Stop right there!"
Kate’s sharp voice cut through the air like a whip.
"If you dare to leave, I’ll expose you!"
Angelina froze.
For a brief second, her fingers curled tightly into fists, her nails digging into her palms as a chill crept up her spine. ’Expose me...?’
Kate stepped forward.
"If you don’t want that," she pressed on, her voice rising, "then at least compensate us. Get us a residential property inside this base."
Angelina slowly closed her eyes.
"I can’t do that," she replied finally, her voice controlled but strained. "Not unless your documents are properly in place."
Kate didn’t even let her finish.
"You got in, didn’t you?" she snapped immediately. "If you can do it, then you must have a way to get us inside too!"
Angelina turned back, her gaze sharp and unyielding.
"I can let you in," she admitted, her tone calm but laced with caution, "but can you guarantee that you won’t cause trouble for Ivy?"
At the mention of that, Kate’s expression darkened, her lips parting as she instinctively spat out, "How can we forget about that bit..."
She suddenly faltered mid-sentence, as if realizing something, before quickly correcting herself.
"Yes... we won’t cause you any trouble."
Angelina watched her silently, her eyes cold, almost mocking.
"Even if you say that," she murmured, shaking her head slightly, "do you really think I can believe you?"
Her gaze hardened.
"Your behavior just now says everything. You feel entitled to my help, yet you don’t even consider what that would cost me."
Her voice dropped, quieter but far more dangerous. "I don’t want to be kicked out because of you. So no, I won’t help."
Without waiting for a response, she turned again and walked toward the gate.
"Everyone, listen!"
Kate’s voice rang out loudly, shrill and desperate, drawing the attention of nearby people.
"Angelina used to consume human flesh to upgrade her powers!"
Angelina’s steps halted for a fraction of a second, her breath hitching as her heart slammed violently against her chest.
’She... said it... just like that...’
Her jaw tightened, but she did not turn back.
Slowly, she stepped inside and closed the gate behind her, the heavy sound reverberating like a final verdict.
