Chapter 698: Gold
Chapter 698: Gold
’If someone with this level of talent cannot be controlled... Then the next best option is maintaining a good relationship with her.’
Because of this, large amounts of compensation, rare resources, and expensive gifts continuously began arriving for Ivy.
When Ivy received yet another shipment, she only stared at the mountain of goods speechlessly.
"These government people truly enjoy giving gifts," she muttered helplessly.
Meanwhile, Dante officially climbed even higher within the military ranks.
After numerous contributions during the apocalypse, he was finally promoted to one of the most respected positions within the military hierarchy.
Major General.
As Dante adjusted his formal uniform inside his room, Alice quietly walked in.
The moment she saw him preparing seriously in front of the mirror, she naturally stepped closer and helped straighten parts of his uniform.
When Dante noticed her actions, the sharpness in his expression softened slightly.
Then he suddenly looked at her with amusement. "Aren’t you going to congratulate me?"
Alice chuckled softly before replying teasingly, "Of course I’ll congratulate you. But first, can you explain how exactly you became a Major General?"
Dante laughed lightly before shaking his head. "It’s all thanks to Silas."
Alice raised an eyebrow immediately.
Not even for a second did she believe Dante had reached this position entirely through his own abilities.
Sure, Dante was intelligent and highly capable, but throughout most of his career, his accomplishments had constantly been overshadowed by a man named Frank.
No matter how much effort Dante put in, the credit was almost always snatched away before anyone could properly acknowledge him.
It was one of the main reasons why Dante had gradually learned to suppress his own ambitions over the years.
Back then, he had simply accepted that this was how the military functioned.
However, everything began changing after Silas took over a far more influential military position.
Alice continued helping him organize parts of his uniform while quietly listening.
Dante appeared to be in an exceptionally good mood today.
"You know," Dante spoke with visible satisfaction, "I was only able to climb this high because Silas continuously negotiated with Carter and the others for my promotion."
He chuckled lightly before straightening his posture proudly.
"Now I finally hold one of the highest-ranking positions in the military."
Then he looked toward Alice teasingly. "So shouldn’t I receive some proper praise? After all, you will rely on me in future."
Alice immediately laughed softly after hearing him.
"There’s no need for me to praise you because I will rely on myself," she replied with amusement in her voice. "I already contacted Ivy and discussed my own plans with her."
Dante blinked in surprise.
"Plans?" he asked curiously. "What exactly are you planning now?"
Alice calmly walked toward the nearby sofa before sitting down elegantly.
"I’m planning to establish a research institute."
The moment those words left her mouth, Dante became stunned.
"A research institute?" he repeated while staring at her in disbelief. "Do you even realize how much funding something like that requires?"
Alice only smiled faintly.
"When have I ever lacked money?" she replied calmly. "Ever since the apocalypse began, I have been hoarding gold nonstop."
A trace of amusement appeared in her eyes as she continued.
"Not to mention, my daughter-in-law repeatedly encouraged me to keep doing so. Now I’m finally harvesting the benefits."
She crossed her arms leisurely before adding, "With the amount of gold I currently possess, I plan to loan portions of it out and use the interest to fund the research institute."
Dante could not help but laugh in admiration.
He immediately gave her a thumbs up.
"You truly are a business genius," he muttered. "Now I finally understand where Silas inherited his frightening business instincts from."
Alice rolled her eyes helplessly after hearing that.
Soon afterward, however, her expression gradually turned serious.
"Dante," she spoke quietly while looking directly into his eyes, "you do understand that what you achieved today was not solely because of your son, right?"
Dante’s smile slowly faded.
He nodded honestly.
"I know," he replied softly. "Ivy played a huge role in all of this too."
The moment he mentioned Ivy, countless complicated emotions surfaced inside his heart.
Thinking back to the past, Dante still remembered how he had once mocked and underestimated Ivy repeatedly. At that time, he truly believed she was nothing more than an arrogant young girl who would eventually fail.
But reality had slapped him hard across the face.
Not only had Ivy proven him completely wrong, but she had also repeatedly accomplished miracles nobody else could achieve.
Surprisingly, Dante did not resent her for it. Instead, he felt proud.
Proud that she had not disappointed him. Proud that she had become someone capable of protecting countless people.
A faint smile slowly appeared on his face.
"That girl truly exceeded every expectation I ever had," Dante murmured quietly.
Then he looked toward Alice again.
"That’s why I plan to build even more influence and authority from now on," he declared seriously. "One day, I want Ivy to be able to use my position proudly without any hesitation."
Alice quietly nodded in approval.
While this family peacefully discussed their future, another person was becoming increasingly wealthier.
And that person was none other than Ivy herself.
The world’s financial systems had slowly begun recovering.
Although dollars still remained the primary global currency, their value had weakened considerably compared to before the apocalypse. Many nations had become unstable, and resources now mattered far more than paper currency.
However, Ivy understood something others failed to realize.
Because of the antidote monopoly and the gradual stabilization of society, the dollar would eventually regain its value.
Sure enough, as time passed, the value of currency began rising rapidly once more.
At the same time, gold became one of the rarest and most valuable assets in existence.
Most gold reserves across multiple regions had already disappeared from circulation entirely.
And the reason behind this was simple.
Ivy herself controlled an absurd amount of gold.
