Chapter 662: Unexpected Discovery ( 9 )
Due to their height difference, Du Beiye had to tiptoe if she wanted to whisper to Mo Junjie. So, she just pulled at his collar.
Mo Junjie didn’t resist and bent his waist. When they were at eye level, he saw Du Beiye’s face getting closer. The next moment, he felt her warm breath brush past his ear, making his ear and heart feel an uncomfortable itchiness.
"Mo Junjie, I feel that this place is weird. Something must be hidden by these people. Let’s go check the lower levels."
As Du Beiye’s soft whisper was heard, Mo Junjie suddenly felt hot, and his heart was beating faster than usual. He swallowed with difficulty and managed to utter a soft grunt. "Mhm."
Not noticing his strange reactions, Du Beiye thought for a moment and added, "We might need to use your ability to knock out the guards later."
Mo Junjie thought that he might be sick and didn’t want to spread it to her, so he straightened his body to distance himself from her and nodded. "No problem."
After reaching an agreement, the two of them sneaked into the emergency stairs. The elevator was working, but it was guarded. So, they could only use the dark stairs.
When they opened the door, the rusty metal door created a sharp creaking sound. Mo Junjie stopped instantly and observed the surroundings.
Fortunately, this place was located far from the area where people live, and no one was there. Otherwise, they would be caught.
Staring at the dark staircases, Du Beiye took out two pairs of glasses from her inventory. She handed one to Mo Junjie and put on the other glasses.
Mo Junjie didn’t ask anything and put on the glasses. The moment the glasses detected heat coming from his skin, he heard a click, and the dark staircase suddenly brightened.
At first, he thought that the glasses were flashlight goggles, but when he pulled down the glasses, there was no light at all. He put it on again, and the surroundings were as clear as during daylight.
Raising his eyebrows, he decided to dismantle these glasses later and see how they were built. If they could mass-produce these glasses, they wouldn’t have to worry about not having light at all.
Not knowing that someone was plotting for her night glasses, Du Beiye narrowed her eyes when she saw the condition of the staircases.
The wall was covered with thick and thin roots. Unlike the mutant tree taken by Yin Yusheng before, these roots were pulsating like veins. There were no leaves, but she noticed traces of dried blood under the roots.
The two of them walked down to the lower level. The further they went, the thicker the rusty iron scent in the air. Unlike the rancid scent coming from zombies, the air was filled with the scent of human blood.
Twenty minutes later, the two of them reached the lowest underground level. Standing in front of the closed metal door, Du Beiye stopped Mo Junjie from opening the door and gestured for him to stay silent.
Mo Junjie nodded and circulated his energy. The next second, a wisp of black mist seeped through the gap under the metal door and went to the other side.
While he was using his poison mist to check the number of people nearby, Du Beiye was talking to her System in her mind. "Krayan, show me the map."
The next moment, a blue screen appeared in front of her. Looking at the minimap, she frowned deeper. Besides the huge orange dot at the center of the room, there were countless white dots and green dots around it.
"Krayan, is that the mutant you said before?" she asked.
"Host, based on the System’s calculation, that mutant is at least a level-five mutant. Both you and your partner only have a five percent chance of winning. It’s not advisable to engage in direct combat at this moment."
"I understand."
Just after she finished her conversation with her System, Mo Junjie also finished probing the other side. He retracted his poison mist and leaned closer to her.
"Beiye, let’s go back first. This place is too dangerous," he said in a low voice.
Hearing this, Du Beiye nodded, and the two of them climbed the stairs to go back. Although Mo Junjie didn’t know the exact level of the mutant hiding underground, he was sure that with their current strength, they might not be able to win if they fought it directly.
What’s more, with so many people living on the upper levels, if they engaged in combat recklessly, their fight might cause high casualties.
If it was before, he wouldn’t care about those people’s lives and deaths. But after he stayed with the Phantom Team for a long time, the way he regarded human lives started to change.
They were no longer specimens for his experiment but living people with their emotions and life experiences. Compared to the cold data, he found them more interesting. Therefore, if possible, he didn’t want to become the reason for those people to die.
When the two of them rejoined the team, the members noticed their solemn expressions. After they sat down, the members came over and sat together.
Jin Xuyan glanced at Feng Yun, and with a wave of his hand, he created a space barrier around them. While people were still able to see them, no one would be able to hear their voices.
"What did you two find out?" Jin Xuyan asked.
"Captain, there is a mutant hiding on the lowest underground level. Besides the mutant, there are around fifteen ability-users and more than two hundred ordinary people inside. Some of those people were already dead, while the rest were dying," Mo Junjie replied.
"Besides this, do you have any other information?" Zhang Yuan asked.
"That mutant should be at least a level-five mutant."
This time, it was Du Beiye and Qin Luzi who replied in unison. When the members heard this, they turned to look at them.
