Chapter 749: The First Snow ( 2 )

Chapter 749: The First Snow ( 2 )

Hearing the worker’s words, Xie Zhou thought for a moment and said, "As long as you give us the location of your family, I will send guards to pick up your family members. It’s safer to stay in this base than outside."

The moment he said this, half of the workers hesitated. After working here for almost a month, they felt that living here was not a bad thing.

If the base’s Commander could bring their families here, that would be even better. With their earnings, they could afford to rent a house and buy enough food to last for at least a month.

Noticing their interests, Xie Zhou continued, "Those who are willing to stay can go to the right side and give the guard the location of your family. The guards will bring them back."

After he said this, more than half of the workers went to the right side. The guards quickly made preparations to write down the locations. They would send military choppers to pick them up later.

"How about the rest of you?" Xie Zhou asked.

"Commander Xie, I want to leave."

"Me too."

"I also want to leave."

Hearing this, Xie Zhou nodded and said, "Those who insist on leaving are free to go." Then he turned to the guards and said, "Open the gate!"

A few minutes later, the massive, heavy gate was opened. The workers were worried they would be detained if they stayed any longer and rushed out.

Seeing them leave, Luo Binxing asked, "Commander, you won’t keep them?"

Shaking his head, Xie Zhou replied, "We’ve already done our best. Since they insist on leaving, we can only let them go. Their fate depends on themselves."

After all the workers left, the gate was closed and locked.

BAM!

The heavy sound of the gate closing echoed through the area.

Two hours later, several military choppers left the base and flew in different directions. While the guards went to pick up the workers’ families, an announcement was made.

"Attention to all residents. The gates have been closed. No entry or departure is allowed. Unless necessary, everyone should stay in their homes as much as possible. If you need any help, go to the public hall or report to the patrolling guards."

As soon as the announcement was made, the survivors quickly returned to their homes. Over the past month, they had been informed about the upcoming winter.

At first, they were skeptical, but as the temperature continued to drop, they couldn’t help but believe it. Most of them had stocked enough food at home. As for water, the base would provide everyone with 2 liters of drinking water daily.

With enough preparation, they didn’t have many worries. As long as the base was still standing, there would be a way to survive.

For the rest of the day, besides the sound of propellers echoing once in a while, only the howling wind could be heard outside.

At 8 o’clock in the evening, the last military chopper finally returned with another batch of survivors. Before they could even leave the landing area, snowflakes started to fall.

"It’s snowing! Everyone, let’s go. We can’t stay outside for too long," the Captain said as he led everyone into the building.

Soon after, the snow grew heavier as the wind picked up speed. Standing inside the public hall, the Captain used the radio to inform the staff.

Since Wei Yunli had already given the order, the staff had prepared everything beforehand. The moment they received the news, a group arrived and led the survivors to the area where their temporary residences were located.

At midnight, the snowfall had turned into a snowstorm. As the storm raged outside, the temperature kept dropping rapidly.

Standing on the 2nd floor of the team’s temporary residence, Jiao Lizhi stared out the window and said, "It’s finally here."

Jin Xuyan walked over and wrapped his arms around her waist. Pulling her into his warm embrace, he said, "Don’t worry. We already prepared for this winter."

"It’s a pity that those people insisted on leaving," Jiao Lizhi let out a long sigh.

"We already did our best. Whatever happens to them in the future is their own choice."

"I know."

As the snowstorm continued, they finally entered the winter season.

When Jiao Lizhi woke up the next day, she glanced at the window and saw that the sky was still dark. She lifted her fiancé’s arm from her waist and walked to the window.

Outside, everything was covered in a vast blanket of white. Judging from the heavy snow, it must have piled up quite high outside.

Although she was an ability-user, Jiao Lizhi still felt cold after she left the bed. Since there was nothing to do today, she climbed back into the bed and buried herself in Jin Xuyan’s embrace.

He was a fire-type ability-user, and his body temperature was higher than that of other types of ability-users. Sleeping with him beside her was as comfortable as hugging a big furnace.

As she fell back to sleep, the workers who insisted on leaving yesterday finally regretted their impulsive decisions.

Due to the sudden snowstorm, they could only hide inside an abandoned building. Without warm clothes or coal, they have to huddle together to keep their bodies warm. They didn’t even dare to sleep, fearing that they wouldn’t be able to wake up anymore.

Everyone stared at the window, hoping that the snowstorm would stop. But after so many hours, not only was the storm not stopping, it was even getting worse.

After a long silence, one of them suddenly asked, "W-will we die here?" His voice was dry and hoarse.

When he didn’t hear any response from the man beside him, he turned to take a look. The moment he saw the man’s pale, blue face, his heart sank.

He raised his heavy, trembling arm and gave the man a light push. "Hey, w-wake up."

Thud!

Instead of waking him up, the man’s stiff body fell to the side and hit the ground with a loud sound.
