Chapter 785: Secret Meeting ( 2 )

Chapter 785: Secret Meeting ( 2 )

Since they had finished discussing the important matter, the First Elder turned to the Twelfth Elder and asked, "Twelfth Elder, how is the investigation going? Did you get any news about the Eleventh Elder?"

The Twelfth Elder shook her head and replied, "All of the people I sent to investigate this matter returned empty-handed. We can’t find even a trace of the Eleventh Elder, not to mention finding him."

Hearing this, the First Elder frowned and said, "It has been a long time since the Eleventh Elder disappeared. Judging from the situation, he might have been killed."

After a moment of silence, he continued, "The position of Elder cannot be left vacant for a long time. Everyone can make a recommendation for this position, and we will vote for the new Eleventh Elder in a week.

"Is there any objection?" he asked.

Everyone shook their heads, including the Twelfth Elder. Although she was unwilling to believe that Jiang Ziyi was dead, all of the hints pointed to that outcome.

As the First Elder had said, they couldn’t delay important matters just for him. For now, she could only follow the majority and continue to search for him in secret.

The Elders discussed for another half an hour before the meeting was adjourned. Everyone left the dungeon and returned to their rooms.

At the same time, in the Lin’an City Base, Xun Che was reading the report from the Head of the Medical and Health Department, Fu Zhengde.

The more he read the report, the deeper his frown became. Ten minutes later, he put the report down and looked at Wen Hanli. "Old Wen, what do you think about this matter?"

"Both Rong Mo’er and Feng Xiu underwent the tests and were under observation for a long time, but there was no sign of improvement at all. I think this matter can’t be delayed any longer. It’s better to ask for Mo Junjie’s help."

Hearing this, Xun Che tapped his fingers on top of his desk for a while before he asked, "How is the situation in the Green Lake Base?"

"Yesterday, I made a phone call to Xie Zhou. So far, the situation in the Green Lake Base is under control. With Wei Yunli handling the management matters, he can focus on managing the guards and keeping the base’s security in check," Wen Hanli replied.

Xun Che nodded and asked again, "Have you contacted the Phantom Team?"

"I contacted Zhang Yuan this morning, and he told me that they planned to return to the Green Lake Base in the next two days."

After thinking for a moment, Xun Che said, "Call him and ask them to return to the Lin’an Base. The mutant animals and mutant plants’ activity has increased lately, and I suspect it has something to do with the emergence of the mutants."

"Commander, do you suspect that besides the two of them, there are other mutants in our base?" Wen Hanli asked.

"The possibility is not zero. After all, if it’s possible for animals and plants to mutate, there is also a chance for humans to mutate."

Hearing this, Wen Hanli was taken aback. "But according to Professor Fu, the mutation won’t harm humans. Instead, it’s beneficial, since we will be able to awaken superpowers."

Xun Che shook his head and said, "Right now, we have no access to advanced tools or machines. So how can we be so sure that the mutation won’t harm humans? Since the mutation can change our DNA, it might not stop at the awakening of our abilities."

"What if we are still not done with our mutation, and the result of the mutation is not the awakening of our abilities but the emergence of a new race, the mutants?" he asked.

The moment he heard this, Wen Hanli was stunned. He had never thought about this possibility, since he always believed that the result of mutation in humans was either turning into a zombie or awakening their abilities.

The office fell into a long silence until it was broken by the opening of the door. Noticing the tense atmosphere, Shang Yuanling hesitated for a moment before entering the office.

When she met Xun Che’s questioning gaze, she finally said, "Commander, I knocked, but you didn’t respond. I thought you were too immersed in your work again."

Hearing this, Xun Che was not angry. He looked at her and unconsciously softened his tone. "Do you need anything?"

"It’s time for your lunch," she showed the lunch box she brought.

Looking at the three-layer insulated lunch box in her hand, he gestured for her to enter and said, "Just place it on the table. I will eat it later."

Although Shang Yuanling wanted to persuade him to eat now, she swallowed her words when she saw that Wen Hanli was still there. In the end, she nodded and placed the lunch box on the coffee table before leaving the office.

Thanks to her interruption, the tense atmosphere was broken. Wen Hanli glanced at the lunch box and said, "Commander, you should have your meal first. I will contact the Phantom Team now."

Since they had finished their discussion, Xun Che didn’t try to keep him any longer and nodded. "Report to me as soon as possible if there is any news regarding Feng Xiu and Rong Mo’er’s condition."

"Understood," Wen Hanli said, nodding as he took his folder and left the office.

After he was alone, Xun Che pinched the bridge of his nose and let out a long sigh.

Although he still cared about Feng Xiu, it was no more than a concern for a friend. He didn’t know when it started, but it seemed that he had finally moved on from his failed relationship.

Not fully understanding his current feelings, he walked to the couch and opened the lunch box. Looking at the carefully prepared lunch, he smiled, feeling his heavy mood lift.

Meanwhile, after leaving the office, Shang Yuanling didn’t return home but went to the mission hall.
