Chapter 106 Part 2 – Step by Step (II)
Feng Qi paused for a few seconds before responding, “His health is holding up.”
“…” Jiang Li fell silent. Her uncle only mentioned Grandpa’s physical condition, avoiding any comment about his emotional state. That could only mean Grandpa’s mood was undoubtedly terrible.
Jiang Li remained silent, prompting Feng Qi to tease, “Xiao Lizi, you only care about your grandpa’s mood. Don’t you plan on sparing a thought for your uncle’s feelings?”
“Huh?” Jiang Li was taken aback. “Uncle, are you in a bad mood?”
“Yes, quite bad,” Feng Qi replied calmly.
“Why?” Jiang Li asked, puzzled. From what she knew of her Third Uncle, he wouldn’t let something like Jiang Zhou’s situation affect him.
“Heartless little thing.” Feng Qi murmured under his breath.
Jiang Li was even more confused. Judging from his tone, it wasn’t Jiang Zhou who had upset him—it was her.
But why?
“Uncle, I made a special trip back for your birthday this year, and I even baked you a cake myself. You can’t call me heartless,” she protested.
Feng Qi chuckled, “You were aware that Tong Yi had someone keep an eye on Bai Guolin, weren’t you?”
“What? You even know about that, Uncle?” Jiang Li was genuinely shocked.
Feng Qi hummed in affirmation. “Not only that, but I also know that the reason those people were caught so quickly was because Tong Yi had pushed them into a trap.”
Jiang Li: “…”
‘Third Uncle, you are too sharp!’
Then again, it had indeed seemed odd that Lin Zhao would agree so readily with Jiang Zhou’s request, even after learning Jiang Zhou had wanted him to donate his kidney.
The timing of the incident had drawn significant public attention, and Lin Zhao’s identity was quickly exposed. Some netizens left comments under the trending topic, saying this supposed top student from Capital University was probably too naïve, likely someone who had focused solely on academics since childhood, making him easy to deceive.
However, this victim-blaming perspective was quickly countered by the majority, who believed Lin Zhao was simply kind-hearted and had been taken advantage of by bad people.
If netizens could figure this out, it was no surprise Feng Qi had too. It was also possible Feng Qi had been keeping tabs on Jiang Zhou all along, which explained how he knew every detail of what Tong Yi and Lin Zhao had done.
Finally, Jiang Li understood why Feng Qi had called her heartless—he must have been upset that she had plotted with Tong Yi without informing him first.
Realizing this, she quickly explained, “Uncle, I asked Tong Yi to keep an eye on Bai Guolin because I noticed Bai Guolin was volunteering at a blood donation center, and I felt his intentions weren’t pure. I wanted to prevent any trouble, but I honestly didn’t know about their plan beforehand. I only learned about it after seeing the news.”
Feng Qi gave a faint hum of acknowledgment. “Then why did you go to Tong Yi instead of asking for my help?”
Jiang Li answered honestly, “I did consider that, but I figured you were always busy with your experiments and might not have the time. So, I asked Big Nephew to keep watch.”
Hearing how she addressed Tong Yi, Feng Qi paused for a few seconds before suddenly changing the subject, “You’re already halfway through your first semester in uni. Have you thought about dating yet?”
Jiang Li was stunned. She couldn’t understand why Feng Qi had suddenly changed the topic, but she still replied truthfully, “Not for now. Besides, I promised you I’d report it to you in advance before I start dating.”
“Fine. I’ll let your previous actions slide for now,” Feng Qi said, very magnanimous.
Jiang Li immediately sweetened her tone. “From now on, if there’s anything I can’t handle myself, I’ll come to Third Uncle first. I won’t keep you in the dark anymore, I promise!”
Feng Qi had no defense against her sweet tongue, “Alright, just make sure to call your grandpa more often. He needs distractions.”
“Okay, I will,” Jiang Li agreed without hesitation. After hanging up, she immediately dialed Tong Yi’s number.
As soon as the call connected, Tong Yi spoke first. “Jiang Xiao Li, I swear it was Lin Zhao who insisted I keep quiet earlier. I wasn’t lying to you.”
Jiang Li hummed in acknowledgment. “I know. That’s not what I wanted to ask you about.”
Relieved yet curious, Tong Yi asked, “Then what do you want to ask?”
“When you had people keep an eye on Bai Guolin and report to the police in time, it didn’t raise any suspicions from them, right?” Jiang Li inquired.
Tong Yi confidently replied, “No, the police just assumed it was a tip-off from a concerned local. And even if they did suspect something, it wouldn’t matter. The fact is, those three were attempting to steal someone’s kidney, and they’ve already confessed. They’re definitely going to prison.”
Hearing this, Jiang Li finally felt at ease.
“Jiang Xiao Li, you should trust in my capabilities. No one’s going to figure this out.” Tong Yi couldn’t resist boasting.
Jiang Li sighed. “But my third uncle has already figured it out. He just complained on the phone, sulking because I’ve kept it from him.”
Tong Yi: “…”
‘Wait, Third Master Feng actually found out?’ Tong Yi was a bit flustered. But knowing Feng Qi’s personality, he wasn’t the type to care about Jiang Zhou’s affairs… unless he had been monitoring Jiang Zhou from the start!
And the reason for keeping tabs on Jiang Zhou? Naturally, it was to prevent that bastard from targeting Jiang Xiao Li’s kidney again.
“Jiang Xiao Li, don’t you think your uncle has been keeping an eye on Jiang Zhou all along?” Tong Yi asked.
Jiang Li sighed. “That’s exactly my thought, but that doesn’t change the fact that your people might have been exposed, right?”
Tong Yi: “…”
Fair point. It wasn’t a big deal for Third Master Feng to know about his actions, but if Grandpa Feng also found out, things could get tricky.
“Jiang Xiao Li, does your grandpa know what I’ve done?” Tong Yi asked nervously.
Jiang Li answered honestly, “I don’t know if Grandpa knows, but even if he does, he wouldn’t retaliate against you. He’s not that kind of person.”
Tong Yi rolled his eyes. Retaliation wasn’t what he was worried about! He was more concerned that this incident might leave a bad impression on Grandpa Feng, making it even harder to pursue his precious granddaughter!
Then again… what was the best method to pursue Jiang Xiao Li? While she was sharp, she was also frustratingly dense when it came to emotions. If he confessed outright and she didn’t share his feelings, she’d probably start avoiding him. He needed to take things step by step, find a way to make her fall for him first, and then seize the right moment to confess.
“Uh… Jiang Xiao Li, if your grandpa doesn’t know about this, maybe we shouldn’t tell him. What do you think?” Tong Yi suggested.
“Of course we can’t tell him!” Jiang Li responded immediately. “If Grandpa finds out that I could have informed him earlier and let him stop Jiang Zhou but didn’t, he’d definitely be mad at me.”
Why should she shoot herself in the foot by bringing it up voluntarily?
Hearing this, Tong Yi finally relaxed. Although Third Master Feng knew the truth, his doting nature toward Jiang Xiao Li meant he likely wouldn’t bring it up with Grandpa Feng either.
For now, there was no need to worry too much.
…
After Old Master Feng resolutely refused Feng Yun’s request, he returned to the house without hesitation.
Even after his rejection, Feng Yun knelt at the gate for another half a day. It was only when she realized that her father was determined not to exonerate her son that she had no choice but to leave. She had always known her father was a man of his word, and given that A’Zhou’s actions this time clearly broke the law, it was understandable that her father, who despised wrongdoing, would refuse to help.
With her father’s route blocked, all she could do now was wait for the court to decide A’Zhou’s fate.
Beyond that, she also needed to settle accounts with Jiang Huai, the root cause of all this.
If it weren’t for Jiang Huai’s sins all those years ago, her life wouldn’t have ended up this miserable, and her son wouldn’t have suffered this fate.
Every debt has its debtor, and every wrong has its perpetrator. Even if it was the last thing she did, she would make sure Jiang Huai paid the price for his actions!
