Chapter 107 Part 1 – Dead End (I)

In the two months before Bai Guolin’s arrest, Assistant Bai had already received several calls from the university counselor, informing him that Bai Guolin frequently arrived late, left early, and skipped classes more than once or twice. If he continued like this, it was inevitable that he would fail his final exams. According to the university’s policies, too many failed courses could result in either being held back or even expelled.

After receiving the first call, Assistant Bai rushed to Beijing immediately. He reprimanded his son harshly and then returned to their hometown.

When the counselor called again, Assistant Bai was so furious that he wished he could give his son a beating immediately. But before he could make another trip to Beijing, his wife suddenly fainted briefly.

Assistant Bai was startled—his wife had always been in good health and had a strong mental fortitude. There was no reason for her to faint just from hearing this news.

Although she regained consciousness quickly, Assistant Bai still drove her to the nearest hospital to undergo a full check-up.

To his surprise, his wife wasn’t unwell but was, in fact, pregnant.

At 45 years old, Assistant Bai’s wife was considered a high-risk expectant mother. In the early stages of pregnancy, extra care was necessary, and the stress from Bai Guolin skipping classes had caused her brief fainting spell.

When Assistant Bai learned of his wife’s pregnancy, he was overjoyed. He had long wanted to have another child, preferably a daughter, but the opportunity had never come. Now, with this unexpected pregnancy, it felt like a blessing had suddenly fallen from the heavens.

After recovering from the joy of this great news, Assistant Bai finally recalled his problematic son.

With his wife being a high-risk expectant mother and her pregnancy still unstable in its early stages, the doctor had recommended bed rest, which meant she needed someone by her side at all times.

Unable to travel to Beijing himself, Assistant Bai could only call his son and give him a thorough scolding, urging him to shape up.

To care for his pregnant wife, Assistant Bai temporarily resigned from his job. After working for so many years, he had accumulated enough savings, so taking a break wouldn’t have much of an impact. As for disciplining Bai Guolin for skipping school, he could only manage that over the phone.

Assistant Bai had initially planned to move to Beijing and find a new job there after his wife gave birth to their second child. That way, he could also keep a closer eye on his son.

Unexpectedly, his son committed such a monstrous act.

If the university hadn’t suddenly notified him about Bai Guolin’s expulsion, he would have remained completely in the dark.

While Assistant Bai knew about the trouble his son had caused, his wife was entirely unaware. After learning about her pregnancy, she stopped watching TV or using her phone. Whenever she felt bored, she would pass the time reading physical books.

Noticing her husband’s restless demeanor, she set down her book and asked, “Is something on your mind?”

Assistant Bai quickly shook his head. “Nothing’s wrong. I was just wondering if you’re carrying a boy or a girl.”

His wife smiled, radiating maternal warmth. “Our son has already been troublesome enough. I hope this time it’s a girl.”

Assistant Bai nodded. “That’s what I’m hoping too.”

Though he desperately wanted to fly to Beijing immediately, he knew he couldn’t leave. His wife was not even three months into her pregnancy and couldn’t endure any shock. He needed to stay by her side at all times to ensure she remained unaware of what their son had done.

As for that stupid boy… he would wait until the verdict came out before going to see him.

After Jiang Zhou and his two accomplices were arrested, Jiang Ruo’s freedom was also restricted. Although she claimed to have no knowledge of their plan, the investigators naturally would not believe her so easily.

Jiang Ruo was subjected to repeated questioning by the investigators. Their interrogations were meticulous, leaving no room for her to conceal anything. Within just a few days, she had confessed everything she knew.

She admitted that she knew Bai Guolin had been going to a blood donation center to find someone with panda blood and to arrange a kidney compatibility test for her. She also admitted that she was aware Bai Guolin’s actions were against the rules but chose not to stop him due to her own selfish reasons.

However, she insisted that she had no knowledge of her brother coming to Beijing, nor did she know that he and Bai Guolin had already found a suitable kidney for her.

Recently, Bai Guolin had indeed seemed unusually busy and out of sorts. She thought it was because, despite obtaining the blood samples, the hospital refused to perform the compatibility tests.

On the morning of the incident, Bai Guolin had excitedly told her he was taking her to meet someone. When she asked who it was, Bai Guolin gave vague answers, only saying the person could help with her kidney and that she would find out when they arrived.

At that point, Jiang Ruo had completely trusted Bai Guolin. After living under the same roof for so long, he had always behaved properly and never acted inappropriately toward her. If he had any ill intentions, he wouldn’t need to take her elsewhere. So, she went with Bai Guolin to the apartment Jiang Zhou had recently rented.

The moment she entered the room and saw Jiang Zhou, she was stunned. In just a few months, her brother had become alarmingly thin, and his gaze toward her was full of complexity. But before she could say anything to him, Dr. Zheng suddenly appeared and sedated her. When she woke up, she saw police officers everywhere, and the endless questioning by investigators began.

The investigators repeated their questions over and over, and Jiang Ruo answered countless times, but the interrogation seemed never-ending. Her freedom remained restricted, and she felt as though she was already in prison. The only relief came during her dialysis sessions in the medical room, where she could momentarily feel like a free person again.

Through the interrogations, Jiang Ruo gradually learned about what her brother and Bai Guolin had done for her. She could never have imagined that they would go to such extreme lengths.

She had always assumed that after finding a suitable kidney donor, Bai Guolin would offer a large sum of money to persuade the person to donate, resorting to moral coercion or even some form of intimidation if the donor refused. However, she never anticipated that her brother would team up with Bai Guolin to resort to murder to obtain someone’s kidney for her.

Her brother had even bought plane tickets for the two of them to escape overseas. Based on the timeline, he had planned to take her out of the country as soon as she recovered enough to move after the surgery. His desperation left no room for consideration of Bai Guolin or the doctor involved.

Jiang Ruo realized that everything her brother did was for her. Before the surgery, he had kept her in the dark, perhaps because he anticipated the possibility of being caught and wanted to protect her.

Perhaps her brother had long anticipated the risks. Even if they failed to escape, she could still avoid prosecution despite receiving the kidney transplant. Her brother, on the other hand, would take the fall and go to prison.

Everything he did was solely to ensure she could continue living.

Jiang Ruo’s face was streaming with tears. She realized that her brother was still the same brother who cared about her the most. The reason he had avoided contacting her for months was that he couldn’t face the reality that they were biological siblings.

She didn’t want her brother to commit such crimes and get locked in prison for her. She would rather he stayed by her side, accompanying her through dialysis, cracking jokes to make her laugh.

But all of that was no longer possible.
