Chapter 108 Part 1 – Harmless (I)
After Jiang Li went upstairs, Jiang Ruo remained standing in a daze at the bottom of the dormitory building, completely unsure of what to do. In a little while, both her brother and Bai Guolin would be going to prison because of her, yet she was powerless to change anything.
“You and Jiang Li have an old grudge, don’t you? Even if you ask her to plead for you, there’s no way she’d help. I think you’re just daydreaming.”
A completely unfamiliar voice interrupted Jiang Ruo’s thoughts. She looked up slightly and saw a girl with wavy curls standing in front of her.
Jiang Ruo didn’t know this girl, but she wasn’t surprised by her mocking tone. Ever since her identity as an illegitimate daughter was exposed, she had encountered too much malice like this and had long since become accustomed to it.
Asking Jiang Li for help to save her brother was indeed wishful thinking. But she had come anyway, because she figured she had nothing left to lose. She had reached the end of her rope and had to try everything.
Now that she was sure Jiang Li would never soften her heart, there was no reason for her to stay any longer. As for arguing with this stranger, that was even more unnecessary.
Jiang Ruo turned to leave, but the girl reached out to stop her. “If you need help, you don’t necessarily have to ask Jiang Li.”
Jiang Ruo was startled, not understanding what this person meant. After a few seconds of silence, she asked in a friendly tone, “What are you trying to say? I don’t quite understand.”
The girl smiled. “Since Jiang Li won’t help you, you can ask Tong Yi instead. Jiang Li and Tong Yi are the closest. If you can convince him to ask Jiang Li for help, she might just agree.”
Jiang Ruo: “…”
Confirmed—this girl was an idiot.
She knew exactly what kind of person Tong Yi was. There was no way he would help her. If she really went to him, he’d probably make things worse instead.
Seeing Jiang Ruo’s silence, the wavy-haired girl thought she was persuaded and continued, “Jiang Li is a person who values relationships and loyalty. As long as you can get Tong Yi to persuade her, I think she’s very likely to help you.”
Jiang Ruo no longer wanted to entertain this lunatic. But when she heard the phrase ‘values relationships and loyalty,’ an image of Qin Zheng immediately surfaced in her mind.
She had known Qin Zheng for many years, so she understood how deeply he valued relationships. They hadn’t spoken since the high school entrance exams, yet when he learned that she was sick, he still went to the hospital to give her a large sum of money.
For Qin Zheng, that money might not have been much. But Jiang Ruo knew his situation well—if the Qin family discovered that he had given her such a large sum, his mother would definitely come looking for trouble.
Six million yuan wasn’t a lot for Qin Zheng, but it was probably the most he could give without his parents noticing.
That proved he still cared about her.
It was only because of that phone call, when he overheard her telling her brother that he was just a former childhood friend, that he had found it unbearable and refused to visit her in the hospital.
Realizing this, Jiang Ruo’s eyes lit up again. Maybe she really could ask Qin Zheng for help. He was the Qin family’s only son and heir—if he was willing to help, Uncle Qin might actually step in.
With that thought, Jiang Ruo turned and left the dormitory without looking back.
Watching Jiang Ruo walk away, the wavy-haired girl smirked in satisfaction. She was actually quite curious to see what would happen when Jiang Ruo, with tears streaming down her innocent face, went crying to Tong Yi. Would he soften and ask Jiang Li for help?
Jiang Ruo had a naturally innocent face. Though she wasn’t as beautiful as Jiang Li, she had a harmless, delicate look that always made people want to protect her. Girls like her were always the most attractive to men.
If Tong Yi really asked Jiang Li for help because of Jiang Ruo, Jiang Li would definitely be upset!
Beside her, a short-haired girl frowned. “Rongrong, why did you say those things to Jiang Ruo just now?”
The wavy-haired girl was indeed Zhang Rongrong. Hearing this question, she immediately put on an innocent expression. “I didn’t say anything much. I just thought she was annoying, standing outside our dorm. I just wanted to find a way to get her to leave sooner.”
“That’s not getting rid of her—you’re obviously trying to cause trouble for Jiang Li,” the short-haired girl retorted.
Zhang Rongrong was unconcerned. “It’s nothing harmless. I was just casually talking, wasn’t I? Besides, even if Jiang Ruo really goes to Tong Yi, he might not care about her.”
The short-haired girl still frowned. “But what if Tong Yi actually does go to Jiang Li because of her? Do you think that’s funny?”
Zhang Rongrong replied confidently, “If he does, that just proves he’s a scumbag. I’d be doing Jiang Li a favor by exposing him. She should be thanking me!”
The short-haired girl: “…”
She had never met anyone as shamelessly unreasonable as Zhang Rongrong! She was clearly just stirring up trouble for no reason, yet she insisted on framing it as doing a good deed. Truly ridiculous.
The short-haired girl turned to look at Zhang Rongrong. “I’ve been busy preparing for my final exams lately, and my schedule is packed. So, don’t come looking for me anymore.”
“What do you mean by that?” This time, it was Zhang Rongrong’s turn to frown.
The short-haired girl took a deep breath and said expressionlessly, “You told me before that your dormmates were arrogant and that Jiang Li was leading the effort to isolate you. I didn’t really believe it back then, but now I’m sure—if you really were ostracized, then you completely deserved it!”
With that, she turned and walked away without looking back.
Zhang Rongrong watched her leaving figure, suddenly feeling irritated. She had never liked Jiang Li’s superior attitude, which was why she had wanted to see if she would still act so high and mighty after arguing with Tong Yi.
But Tong Yi might not even help Jiang Ruo. How did that make her the villain in all this?!
…
After leaving the Capital Medical University, Jiang Ruo didn’t go straight to Capital University to find Qin Zheng. Non-students needed to make an appointment in advance to visit the campus, and she simply couldn’t get in right now.
Yet, she also didn’t have the courage to call Qin Zheng. She was terrified that he would reject her request over the phone. If that happened, she truly wouldn’t know what to do next.
Back at her rented apartment, all she felt was the overwhelming emptiness. When Bai Guolin was around, he would always try to cheer her up. But those days were long gone.
The past was lost forever, and the future was nothing but uncertainty. If even Qin Zheng refused to help her…
No. Qin Zheng wouldn’t reject her.
He wouldn’t.
…
After returning home, Tong Bingran immediately sought out his son, Tong Xu.
“I heard that you donated many lab equipment to Capital Medical University?”
When he first heard the news, he was quite surprised. He had never expected that his blockheaded son was still not over Jiang Li.
Tong Xu rubbed his nose and said, “Well, I wanted to support our country’s medical field, so I made a small donation.”
Tong Bingran scoffed. “A small donation? More like half of everything you earned this year.”
His son had some talent in business and investment, and had been making more profits than losses in recent years. Compared to many prodigal children of his peers, this boy was actually doing quite well. If it weren’t for Tong Yi constantly overshadowing him, Tong Bingran might have even felt proud.
Unfortunately, nothing kills confidence like comparisons, and he really didn’t want to keep comparing his son to his nephew.
Hearing his father’s remark, Tong Xu immediately looked guilty. “Dad, I used my own money. If you have a problem with it, just… just think of it as a bad investment, okay?”
Tong Bingran sighed. “It’s your money, I’m not saying anything whatever you use it for. But that Feng family girl probably isn’t as easy to win over as you think. I doubt she’s impressed by this kind of gesture.”
Tong Xu looked a little awkward. “The 80th anniversary of Jiang Li’s university is coming up soon. I want to attend.”
Knowing his son couldn’t be dissuaded, Tong Bingran simply said, “Go if you want, just remember one thing—don’t make a fool of yourself. Got it?”
Tong Xu immediately nodded. “I know, Dad. Don’t worry.”
He hadn’t seen Jiang Li for a long time, but he never missed any news about her.
Even though she was far away in Beijing, she was a prominent figure at her school. All he had to do was check the campus forum, and her name was everywhere.
The more he followed her news, the more he wanted to see her—even if it was just from a distance at the anniversary celebration.
That was why he had donated lab equipment to her school. His only goal was to get into the anniversary event.
Originally, he had kept this from his father, but he hadn’t expected to get found out.
Luckily, his father hadn’t objected. Otherwise, he really wouldn’t have known how to persuade his father.
