Chapter 107 Part 2 – Dead End (II)

The police interrogated Jiang Ruo for two weeks. Although they suspected her innocence was not absolute, all the evidence confirmed that she truly had no knowledge of Jiang Zhou and Bai Guolin’s plans.

Everything had originated because of her, yet from a legal standpoint, she was not guilty.

Jiang Ruo was finally released, though her freedom remained restricted. Until the sentencing of Jiang Zhou and the others was finalized, she could be summoned back at any time.

As soon as she regained limited freedom, Jiang Ruo went to seek out Jiang Li. She knew that only the Feng family had the power to save her brother. Grandpa Feng had connections with high-ranking officials; a single word from him could significantly lighten her brother’s sentence.

However, the Feng family had not taken any action, which Jiang Ruo believed was because of Jiang Zhou’s earlier attempt to force Jiang Li to donate her kidney. This had likely made the Feng family resent both her and her brother.

Under such circumstances, she believed that only by pleading through Jiang Li could the Feng family be persuaded to save her brother.

This was the only thing she could do for him.

The case of the kidney-robbing trio had gone viral online, but the court’s verdict was unlikely to be announced anytime soon. Jiang Li initially followed the case closely, but as time passed, she gradually shifted her focus back to her studies, figuring that she would learn the verdict eventually.

To her astonishment, Jiang Ruo actually came looking for her.

That evening, after her self-study session, Jiang Li was walking back to the dormitory with Wen Wan when she spotted a familiar figure near the dorm building. Although the girl wore a mask and her hair was loose, Jiang Li immediately recognized her as Jiang Ruo.

It didn’t surprise Jiang Li that Jiang Ruo had been released. Jiang Ruo had always been surrounded by people who would sacrifice everything for her. In the novel, Jiang Zhou would fulfill her every request, and Bai Guolin would obey her unconditionally. Whatever Jiang Ruo desired, they would do everything in their power to get it for her.

Most likely, Jiang Zhou and Bai Guolin hadn’t let Jiang Ruo know about their plans to target Lin Zhao’s kidney, which was why she had been released so quickly.

What puzzled Jiang Li was why Jiang Ruo would come looking for her.

When Jiang Ruo saw Jiang Li, her eyes lit up. She took several steps forward but then stopped abruptly, standing a short distance away. “Jiang Li, can we talk?” She asked, her face filled with hope.

Jiang Li frowned in confusion. “I don’t think we have anything to talk about.”

Seeing Jiang Li turned to leave, Jiang Ruo quickly stepped forward to block her path. “I’ll only say a few words. It won’t take much of your time.”

Wen Wan didn’t immediately recognize Jiang Ruo. When Jiang Li refused to engage with her, Wen Wan linked arms with Jiang Li, ready to head back to the dorm together.

But when Jiang Ruo suddenly approached, Wen Wan finally recognized her. This was the infamous former child star at the center of the kidney-robbing crime—Jiang Ruo.

Recalling how Lin Zhao had almost lost his kidney to those people, Wen Wan’s expression darkened. Even though Lin Zhao had volunteered to act as bait, the group’s intent to steal his kidney had been horrifyingly real.

If Jiang Li hadn’t recognized Bai Guolin at the blood donation center or warned Lin Zhao in advance, he would have remained oblivious to the impending danger. Jiang Zhou’s subsequent attempts to approach him might have succeeded, leaving him vulnerable to their heinous plan.

“Jiang Li already said she doesn’t want to talk to you. Why are you so shamelessly pushing yourself onto her?” Wen Wan glared at Jiang Ruo.

Jiang Ruo put on a pitiful expression. “I… I have no other choice…”

Shedding her usual gentle demeanor, Wen Wan shouted angrily, “No other choice? You could go for regular dialysis while waiting for a compatible kidney, couldn’t you? And yet you didn’t think twice about scheming to get someone else’s kidney. You’re absolutely disgusting.”

Jiang Ruo, bewildered by her animosity, looked at Jiang Li with pleading eyes.

“Jiang Li, I know I have no right to ask this, but I… but I truly don’t know what else to do. My brother did it all for me…” Jiang Ruo said desperately.

Jiang Li stared at her. “You’re not asking me to help save Jiang Zhou, are you?”

How on earth could Jiang Ruo even utter such a ridiculous request?

Jiang Ruo nodded immediately. “I know it’s a lot to ask, but if you don’t agree, Grandpa will definitely not step in to help him.”

Jiang Li: “…”

Seeing Jiang Li remain silent, Jiang Ruo continued, “After all, he is your biological brother, and also Grandpa’s grandson. Grandpa must want to save him too; he’s just holding back because of you—”

“Stop!” Unable to listen to her nonsensical rambling any longer, Jiang Li raised her hand.

When Jiang Ruo finally stopped talking, Jiang Li spoke up, her voice icy. “Let me clarify three things.”

Jiang Ruo froze, unsure of what to expect.

Jiang Li began calmly, “First, he’s my grandpa, not yours. Stop addressing him so familiarly. Second, coming to me is pointless. I will not agree with any of your requests. Third, Jiang Zhou’s actions violated criminal law. If you want Grandpa to help, you’d first need to grant him the power to rewrite the law.”

With that, Jiang Li grabbed Wen Wan’s hand and walked away.

As they climbed the stairs, Wen Wan muttered indignantly, “Who does she think she is, asking you for help? Doesn’t she feel disgusted by what Jiang Zhou and Bai Guolin did for her?”

Jiang Li shook her head. “She won’t feel disgusted. If she did, she would’ve refused when Jiang Zhou threatened his mother with suicide to force her to ask me for a kidney.”

Wen Wan’s expression twisted in disgust. “She’s truly revolting. Honestly, I don’t understand why Jiang Zhou and Bai Guolin were willing to go that far for her. Did they act on their own, or did she manipulate them into doing it?”

“Who knows?” Jiang Li sighed. In the original plot of the novel, Jiang Ruo had never faced so many setbacks. Whatever she wanted was always handed to her without the need for scheming, so she was able to remain a pure and untainted white lotus.

But things had changed too much since she had transmigrated into ‘Jiang Li.’ Jiang Ruo could no longer obtain what she wanted so effortlessly. Whether she had manipulated Jiang Zhou and Bai Guolin or not, perhaps only the three of them knew.

Jiang Li didn’t want to waste time speculating about Jiang Ruo. Now that Jiang Zhou and Bai Guolin were out of the picture, even if Jiang Ruo still wanted to obtain someone else’s kidney, she no longer had the means to do so.

Besides, after experiencing the consequences, would Jiang Ruo still dare to scheme her way to get a kidney?

After Jiang Li and Wen Wan went into the building, Jiang Ruo remained standing silently outside, lost in thought. She had anticipated that Jiang Li would refuse her request, but she hadn’t expected her rejection to be so firm.

Her brother’s past actions had already made Jiang Li resent him deeply. With her brother now facing prison, Jiang Li must feel relieved, even happy. Coming to Jiang Li for help had indeed been a futile effort.

But now, she truly had nowhere else to turn.

Who else could she ask for help?
