Chapter 109 Part 1 – School Anniversary (I)
After Jiang Ruo left, Qin Zheng turned to Tong Yi and was just about to say something when the second half of the basketball game started. The two of them returned to the court to continue playing. Qin Zheng didn’t seem to be too affected. After the game ended, instead of responding to the cheers of the cheerleaders celebrating their win, he chased after Tong Yi out of the court.
On the way back to the dorm, Qin Zheng finally voiced his question, “Why did you speak up for me just now?”
Tong Yi took a big gulp of mineral water. “Why do you think I was speaking up for you?”
Qin Zheng raised an eyebrow. “Weren’t you?”
“That depends on whether you still have feelings for her or not,” Tong Yi replied with a sarcastic smile. “If you do, then what I said just now could be seen as sowing discord.”
“You obviously meant well. Why say something like that?” Qin Zheng frowned slightly. His feelings for Jiang Ruo had already vanished after hearing the conversation between her and Jiang Zhou at the hospital, and the bank card he left that day was simply out of consideration for their past relationship—and nothing more.
From the moment he left the hospital, he and Jiang Ruo were strangers.
There was no way he would agree to help with Jiang Zhou’s matter even when Jiang Ruo came pleading—but if Tong Yi hadn’t been so blunt, Jiang Ruo wouldn’t have left so quickly.
He could clearly tell that Tong Yi’s words to Jiang Ruo earlier were to help him out of a tough situation.
Tong Yi patted Qin Zheng on the shoulder. “You warned Jiang Xiao Li before, and this time, I helped you get rid of a small trouble. If you think about it, your favor’s still greater.”
Qin Zheng stared at Tong Yi. “Do you know that after that incident, Third Master Feng initiated a cooperation with our company?”
Tong Yi shrugged. “Third Master Feng is Third Master Feng, and me is me. No conflict there.”
Qin Zheng nodded. After hesitating for a few seconds, he couldn’t help but ask, “Do you like Jiang Li?”
Tong Yi looked surprised. “You figured that out?”
Qin Zheng cleared his throat. “You’re too obvious. Even if I didn’t want to notice, it’s hard not to.”
Tong Yi sighed lightly and tossed the water bottle into a trash can. “Even you can tell, but Jiang Xiao Li can’t.”
“Maybe it’s because she’s too close to the situation to see it clearly. But… do you want her to notice?” Qin Zheng asked.
Tong Yi thought for a moment and replied, “I don’t know.”
He was worried she’d never realize his feelings, but he was also worried that if she did and didn’t feel the same way, she’d start avoiding him.
Qin Zheng saw through his thoughts at a glance and couldn’t help but offer advice. “The main reason Jiang Li can’t see how you feel is because you two are too close. I think you should try creating a romantic atmosphere—like sending her flowers, or lighting candles outside her dorm building…”
“You sound like you know a lot,” Tong Yi interrupted him. “But haven’t you been single all this time?”
Qin Zheng: …
Forget it! That mouth of Tong Yi’s is only good for eating and pissing people off—trying to have a pleasant conversation with him is simply a fool’s errand!
Seeing Qin Zheng’s speechless expression, Tong Yi smirked, “I didn’t mean anything by it. I just think Jiang Xiao Li probably wouldn’t like those kinds of cheesy moves.”
Qin Zheng didn’t expect Tong Yi to actually offer an explanation—it was totally out of character for him!
Tong Yi then added, “Jiang Xiao Li said she likes mature and reliable guys, so I’m trying to move in that direction. I look pretty reliable now, don’t I?”
Qin Zheng: “…”
It’s over—Tong Yi’s acting completely out of character now!
Qin Zheng finally understood—Tong Yi might act aloof around other girls, but when it came to Jiang Li, his character crumbled completely.
Now, he had a very compelling reason to believe that Tong Yi’s image in front of Jiang Li was probably similar to that of a doofus husky.
In any case, it would be wise to refrain talking too much about Jiang Li with Tong Yi, lest his symptoms infectious!
…
After Zhang Rongrong incited Jiang Ruo, she kept waiting for a reaction from Tong Yi and was looking forward to him going to Jiang Li on Jiang Ruo’s behalf.
Unfortunately, she soon realized her expectations were for nothing, because Jiang Li had been acting completely normal lately. Even when she talked about Tong Yi with Wen Wan, there wasn’t the slightest change in her attitude.
With no drama to enjoy, Zhang Rongrong gave up. Her eyes darted around before she walked up to Jiang Li and politely asked, “Are you really not going to be the MC for the anniversary celebration?”
Jiang Li shook her head. “I don’t plan to.”
Hearing that, Zhang Rongrong couldn’t hide her delight, but not even a minute later, she followed up with, “But I heard this is the 80th anniversary of our school’s founding, and everyone chosen as an MC can earn extra credits.”
Jiang Li looked up from her tablet and replied flatly, “I don’t need those credits. If you want to go, just sign up. I won’t compete with you.”
Having her true thoughts seen through, Zhang Rongrong looked a bit awkward. “It’s not like I have to go, but the counselor encouraged us to sign up, so I figured I’d add to the numbers. If I’m lucky and get some extra credits, that’d be nice.”
In any situation, being chosen as an MC depends mostly on image. Zhang Rongrong had some confidence in hers, but the academic counselor said there was only one slot in their class. If Jiang Li signed up too, her own chances of being selected would basically drop to zero.
Now that she knew Jiang Li wouldn’t participate, Zhang Rongrong finally relaxed a bit. She looked at Jiang Li and said, “If you’re sure you’re not going, then I’ll go ahead and sign up.”
Her tone sounded like she was scared Jiang Li might change her mind. Wen Wan couldn’t help but mutter, “Jiang Li’s grades are so good she doesn’t need to worry about credits. She’s already working on publishing a paper. She’s not going to care about a few credits.”
Zhang Rongrong frowned. “I wasn’t talking to you. Why are you being so passive-aggressive?”
Wen Wan quietly retorted, “You’re the one pestering Jiang Li. It’s like you think she’s blocking your way if she signs up.”
Zhang Rongrong snorted. “I’ll admit I can’t compare to Jiang Li in terms of image and presence, but I’m still way ahead of you. There’s no way you’d be my competition.”
Wen Wan paused for a few seconds, then said, “All I see is that you’re really good at being mean and petty.”
Jiang Li chuckled and gave Wen Wan a thumbs-up. “Good job, girl. You’ve improved.”
Wen Wan knew she was being praised for getting better at comebacks and blushed slightly. “That’s because I’ve got a good teacher,” she whispered.
Although Jiang Li would not take the initiative to provoke others, she never backed down when provoked either. Wen Wan felt that after spending time with Jiang Li, she was starting to pick up the same skill.
Jiang Li smiled and nodded. “Well, you’re doing well. Keep it up. And I think your image and presence are just fine—sweet and cute, very likable.”
Hearing Jiang Li’s praise, Wen Wan beamed with happiness.
Zhang Rongrong, seeing the two of them go back and forth like that, snorted with annoyance, “Wen Wan’s type is definitely popular among girls, but guys usually prefer someone more mature and sexy.”
Wen Wan immediately retorted, “What guys like has nothing to do with me.”
Zhang Rongrong shrugged. “True, but I don’t think Lin Zhao would be into a little kid like you.”
Wen Wan’s expression instantly changed. “You’re not Lin Zhao. Why are you speaking for him?”
Zhang Rongrong smirked. “I’m just saying this casually—no need to be so sensitive. Who knows? Maybe Lin Zhao actually likes little girls.”
“…” Wen Wan was practically about to puff up like an angry pufferfish. ‘This Zhang Rongrong’s seriously unbearable!’
Jiang Li patted Wen Wan’s hand, soothing her, “My dear, do you remember? In less than two years, you’ll be eighteen.”
“So?” Wen Wan didn’t quite get it. That might be true, but what if Lin Zhao met someone he liked in the meantime?
Jiang Li gave her a look. “Lin Zhao already promised you—he won’t date anyone before you turn eighteen.”
“Oh right, I don’t think Lin Zhao would lie to me.” Wen Wan nodded. Thinking about it that way, she instantly felt recharged. As for that annoying roommate, she didn’t need to take her words seriously at all.
