Chapter 109 Part 2 – School Anniversary (II)

Seeing how easily Jiang Li comforted Wen Wan, Zhang Rongrong found it all a bit boring. She sighed, opened her notebook, and started filling out the MC application form.

She only got into this school because she happened to perform well in the college entrance exam and got bonus points for being an ethnic minority. She barely made it past the cutoff.

But after starting university, she realized that all her classmates were more outstanding than she was, and the most terrifying among them happened to be her roommate Jiang Li, the top scorer in the entrance exams. No matter what the subject was, Jiang Li grasped it instantly. While others were busy keeping up with coursework, she even still had time to pursue her own interests.

It was one thing to say her uncle taught her the major-specific courses in advance, but even in the general education subjects, Jiang Li could remember everything after glancing through the materials once or twice.

Lately, Jiang Li had been busy writing an academic paper, supposedly an assignment from her uncle, and she seemed to be handling it with ease.

No wonder people called her Prodigy God Jiang! She was someone regular people couldn’t catch up to even if they were launched on a rocket.

Then there was this brat, Wen Wan. She didn’t seem that serious in class, but every time they did group assignments, she never dragged the team down and always ended up with pretty high evaluations.

Zhang Rongrong let out a helpless sigh. Comparing yourself to others really was a surefire way to drive yourself crazy! Her college years were likely destined to be unremarkable, but if she wanted to get into a decent hospital after graduation, she had to build up a good resume for herself. Since relying on academics for extra points was unrealistic, her best bet was to actively sign up for as many extracurricular activities as possible.

After Zhang Rongrong signed up, she was successfully selected as the MC. Her appearance and demeanor were indeed quite decent, and since there weren’t that many applicants, she was pretty pleased with herself.

But when she learned that Jiang Li would be going on stage as an outstanding student to receive an award—and even giving a speech as the student representative—her joy quickly faded.

What she had to work extremely hard for, Jiang Li wasn’t even remotely interested in. And the things Jiang Li could easily obtain, she couldn’t even get close to touching. Yet someone like that lived in the same dorm room as her—just thinking about it made her feel suffocated.

Jiang Li wasn’t particularly surprised when she found out she would be speaking as the outstanding student representative. She had long been used to such occasions since high school, so there wasn’t much she needed to prepare.

According to the usual procedure, after the flag-raising and national anthem, there would be speeches from the university’s big-wigs, followed by the awards ceremony for outstanding students.

What Jiang Li didn’t expect was that the person presenting the awards would be Tong Xu.

The person in charge introduced Tong Xu as the sole sponsor of this anniversary celebration. He had also previously donated a large amount of equipment to the school, so this time he was here as a special guest.

When their eyes met, Jiang Li merely nodded slightly and maintained a polite smile, thinking there was no need for any extra interaction.

But for Tong Xu, that was already more than enough. He had come to this place just to see Jiang Li. If he could manage to say a word or two to her, that would be a pleasant surprise.

After the awards were given, Jiang Li delivered her speech as the student representative, followed by performances from each academic year.

Jiang Li wasn’t particularly interested in watching performances and felt like sneaking away. She looked at Wen Wan. “Wanna slip out together?”

Wen Wan whispered hesitantly, “Wouldn’t it be bad if we just left like that?”

“No one will probably notice, right?” Jiang Li wasn’t entirely sure either.

Wen Wan gave her a sympathetic look. “I think if it were just me sneaking off, no one would pay attention. But if I sneak off with you, we’ll definitely get noticed.”

Jiang Li: “…”

‘Fine, guess we’re staying and watching the show!’

Over the next few hours, Jiang Li found some of the performances surprisingly entertaining. The skits and comedic dialogues had some good laughs, and the dances were aesthetically pleasing. She didn’t feel so eager to leave anymore.

Once the anniversary celebration ended, Wen Wan got up and linked arms with Jiang Li. “Now we can leave together.”

The two of them left the sports field together. Originally, they were planning to head straight back to the dorm, but unexpectedly, Tong Xu had followed them.

“Jiang Li, long time no see,” Tong Xu looked at Jiang Li with a gentle smile.Since they were at campus and she had friends around, he refrained from calling her “Miss Jiang Li.”

Jiang Li looked up at him. “You just gave me an award a few hours ago.”

“…” Tong Xu was speechless. It was just a casual opening line—he didn’t expect Jiang Li to take it so literally.

He awkwardly rubbed his nose. “Since I just gave you an award, would you be willing to treat me to dinner? Just something simple in your cafeteria would be fine.”

Jiang Li looked puzzled. “Didn’t you give me that award on behalf of our school?”

“…” Once again, Tong Xu was rendered speechless—because it was true that he was representing Jiang Li’s university when he presented the award, which meant she had absolutely no reason to treat him to dinner just because of that.

Wen Wan glanced at Tong Xu, then at Jiang Li, and realized that Jiang Li didn’t like this man. She frowned and said, “Jiang Li, you promised me earlier that you’d help me go over our assignments after this—did you forget? Let’s go back to the dorm.”

“Oh, right! I totally forgot. Let’s head back quickly, then.”

After saying that, Jiang Li turned to Tong Xu. “Sorry, I have something I need to take care of. Maybe we can talk about dinner another time.”

Tong Xu: “…”

He realized that Jiang Li was just finding ways to avoid him, and her ‘maybe another time’ was clearly just a polite excuse.

Jiang Li and Wen Wan walked away together while Tong Xu stood there watching her back, unable to snap out of it for a long time.

When Tong Xu had hurried after Jiang Li earlier, the school director who had been entertaining him was left confused. But when he followed and saw Tong Xu talking to Jiang Li, he immediately understood that the two of them already knew each other.

After Jiang Li left, the director finally stepped forward with a smile and asked, “Mr. Tong, you know our student Jiang?”

Tong Xu came back to his senses and nodded with a smile. “Yes, our family and Jiang Li’s grandfather’s family have been close for generations.”

The director looked enlightened. “If we’d known that earlier, we should’ve had her personally receive you.”

Tong Xu shook his head. “She probably doesn’t like doing that kind of thing. I don’t want to make her uncomfortable.”

The director was momentarily stunned, then smiled and changed the subject. “Mr. Tong, would you be interested in touring our campus? If you’d like…”

Before Tong Xu could respond, Zhang Rongrong suddenly walked over and said with a smile, “I can give Mr. Tong a tour of our campus.”

The director frowned. “What year are you? The celebration is over—go change out of your cheongsam quickly before you catch a cold.”

Zhang Rongrong hadn’t expected the director to be so harsh. She glanced at Tong Xu and quietly said, “Hello, Mr. Tong. I’m also a first-year student. Same major and dorm as Jiang Li.”

Tong Xu’s eyes lit up. “You’re Jiang Li’s roommate?”

Zhang Rongrong nodded slightly. “Mm, we’ve been roommates since the beginning. For this school celebration, Jiang Li knew I wanted to be an MC, so she didn’t sign up.”

Tong Xu smiled. “She has a calm personality, not one to fight with others.”

Back when the Jiang family brought her back but refused to acknowledge her identity, she hadn’t made any fuss the entire time.

In his memory, Jiang Li had only ever been angry once—at Qin Zheng’s graduation party, when she was harassed by his godmother’s daughter, Sun Minmin. He tried to play the peacemaker, and that was the only time she got angry at him.

The stunned Zhang Rongrong: “…”

‘Just how thick are Mr. Tong’s rose-colored glasses when it comes to Jiang Li? If someone like her counts as ‘calm,’ then the whole campus must be full of peace-loving saints!’

Tong Xu turned to the director. “I’d like this student to show me around the campus. Would that be alright?”

The director immediately nodded. “Of course, no problem at all.”

Then he turned to Zhang Rongrong. “Please show Mr. Tong around properly. Once the event is over, we’ll give you two extra credits.”

Zhang Rongrong was overjoyed. “I’ll definitely give Mr. Tong a great tour. I’ll make sure he’s completely satisfied.”

Hearing that, the director exchanged a few polite words with Tong Xu and then left, reassured.

Zhang Rongrong turned to Tong Xu. “Mr. Tong, where would you like to start?”

Tong Xu thought for a moment and asked, “Where does Jiang Li… I mean, where do you all usually have classes? Let’s start with your academic building.”

Zhang Rongrong: “…”

‘Whatever—for the sake of those credits, let’s do this!’
