Chapter 110 Part 1 – Big Spender (I)
Just now, while Tong Xu was speaking with Jiang Li, Zhang Rongrong stood not far away. She could tell at a glance that this VIP donor only had eyes for Jiang Li—and Jiang Li’s attitude toward him was clearly distant and indifferent.
Watching this, Zhang Rongrong felt only one thing: surprise. Mr. Tong was capable of donating equipment to their medical school at a young age. Clearly, he came from a wealthy background and had a successful career, and yet even a man like him failed to catch Jiang Li’s eye.
If Jiang Li had grown up in a wealthy family, it would be understandable for her to have high standards. But Jiang Li had grown up in an orphanage. She’d only been living with her wealthy grandfather for a few short years, and now she already had everything anyone could ask for. It really did feel unfair.
But Zhang Rongrong also knew that no matter how much she disliked Jiang Li, it wouldn’t make a bit of difference—Jiang Li probably didn’t even notice her feelings.
She had even rushed out just now when the school director mentioned wanting to show Mr. Tong around campus, eager to earn some extra credit by leveraging her status as Jiang Li’s roommate.
Mr. Tong was an honored guest at their university. She figured that building a good rapport with him would easily earn her extra credits. The only downside was that along the way, she’d have to keep listening to Mr. Tong go on and on about Jiang Li.
Sure enough, on the way to the teaching building, every word out of Tong Xu’s mouth was about Jiang Li. Faced with this chatty man, Zhang Rongrong couldn’t help but think of Tong Yi, who often came to campus looking for Jiang Li.
Tong Yi had a rather cold personality. When he used to wait for Jiang Li in front of the dormitory building, Zhang Rongrong would try to greet him, but he never paid her any attention.
Not like this Mr. Tong—so gentle and refined. Even though Zhang Rongrong knew he was only being polite to her because of Jiang Li, she couldn’t help but have a good impression of him.
Come to think of it, both Tong Yi and this Mr. Tong shared the same last name. And looking closely, there were indeed some similarities in their facial features. Could it be that they were brothers?
If that were true, then it meant both Tong brothers had feelings for Jiang Li—now that would make a real exciting drama!
When Tong Xu noticed Zhang Rongrong staring at his face, he let out a chuckle, “Is there something on my face?”
Zhang Rongrong’s cheeks instantly flushed. Even though she knew he wasn’t interested in her, she couldn’t stop her heart from racing—a man this handsome and gentle truly is hard to resist!
Quietly reminding herself not to fall for someone who liked Jiang Li, Zhang Rongrong softly replied, “No, it’s just… Sir, you look a bit like one of Jiang Li’s other friends, but your vibes are completely different.”
Tong Xu’s smile faded slightly. “You mean Tong Yi, right? Well, he’s my cousin. Our personalities… are quite different.”
Noticing his dislike toward his cousin, Zhang Rongrong quickly said, “Tong Yi is pretty hard to get along with, but you’re not like that.”
“Then… does he come to see Jiang Li often?” Tong Xu asked, even though he already knew the answer.
Zhang Rongrong nodded. “Yeah, he comes often. So much so that most people think they’re dating.”
After a brief silence, Tong Xu quietly inquired, “Are you certain it’s merely a misunderstanding?”
He had been aware of Tong Yi’s feelings for Jiang Li. Otherwise, Tong Yi wouldn’t have tried to sabotage his image in her eyes back at the karaoke by dragging in some woman with terrible acting skills.
Tong Xu knew his father looked down on his ability, but he didn’t think he was any worse than Tong Yi. If Jiang Li ever had to choose between the two of them, he believed she’d pick him.
Seeing Tong Xu’s suddenly somber expression, Zhang Rongrong quickly nodded. “Of course, it’s just a misunderstanding! I’m Jiang Li’s roommate—if they were really dating, there’s no way I wouldn’t know.”
Worried he might not believe her, she added, “Tong Yi and Jiang Li are close, but he’s never given her flowers or similar gifts. Jiang Li never spends the night outside, and they don’t even have long late-night phone calls either. In any case, Jiang Li isn’t the type who’s glued to her phone.”
All signs pointed to one thing—Jiang Li and Tong Yi were not dating. Couples just don’t act that way.
Hearing this, Tong Xu’s expression visibly brightened. In this age and day, college students dating was normal—even cohabitating was no longer uncommon. If Jiang Li and Tong Yi had simply dated, he could still accept that, but he definitely would mind if they’d been physically intimate.
However, if everything Jiang Li’s roommate just said was true, at least it meant they hadn’t lived together!
Seeing his obvious relief, Zhang Rongrong felt a bit annoyed and couldn’t help but mutter, “Even if Jiang Li and Tong Yi aren’t dating now, since Tong Yi keeps coming around, a lot of guys who like Jiang Li have given up.”
Tong Xu sighed softly. “So that’s how it is.”
He’d seen posts on the campus forum before—photos of Jiang Li and Tong Yi together, with people openly shipping them as a couple. Neither of them had ever come out to clarify.
He previously thought Jiang Li had accepted Tong Yi’s feelings. Still, he didn’t want to give up easily, which was why he donated equipment to her school as a way of fighting indirectly.
Finding out that Jiang Li and Tong Yi weren’t in a relationship was certainly an unexpected delight.
Zhang Rongrong found that this cousin of Tong Yi’s was actually a very cultivated man. He was always polite when speaking to her, and when he noticed her rubbing her arms from the cold, even offered her his jacket.
She showed him around campus, and before parting ways, they exchanged contact info. When she tried to return his jacket, he said she could give it back next time they met.
If it weren’t for the fact that he liked Jiang Li, he’d be practically perfect!
…
Wen Wan used the excuse of needing help with her assignment to help Jiang Li get away from Tong Xu. On the way back to the dorm, she couldn’t resist her curiosity and asked, “That Mr. Tong—he’s related to Tong Yi, right?”
Jiang Li nodded. “He’s Tong Yi’s cousin. But their relationship isn’t great.”
“Figured. And I also noticed—you don’t seem to like him much either. That’s why I pulled you away,” Wen Wan said confidently.
Jiang Li shook her head with a chuckle. “It’s not that I dislike him. I just know he’s interested in me, and since I don’t feel the same, it’s better to keep some distance.”
Wen Wan couldn’t help but probe further. “So, if Tong Yi confessed to you, would you keep your distance from him, too?”
Jiang Li paused for a moment, “Tong Yi doesn’t see me that way. Where is this ‘if’ coming from?”
Wen Wan pressed on, “Just treat it as a hypothetical question, alright? In short, if Tong Yi liked you, what would you do?”
Jiang Li sighed, looking helpless. “That’s not a valid assumption. I don’t want to waste time discussing something unrealistic.”
Wen Wan smiled meaningfully. “I get it now. You wouldn’t push Tong Yi away. You’d probably be torn, and slowly come to terms with your feelings.”
Seeing her so persistent, Jiang Li burst into a laughter, “Why are you assuming Tong Yi would like me? Why not assume I like him instead? Would he avoid me, or…?”
“There’s such an if?” Wen Wan looked shocked. “If you liked him, I bet Tong Yi would be so happy he’d jump for joy, post it online immediately, and tell the whole world his girlfriend is Jiang Li.”
Jiang Li: “…”
‘Now that’s what I call ridiculous!’
‘Forget it—kids like to dream. No point arguing with her.’
‘That guy Tong Yi is fixated on being called ‘big brother.’ How could he possibly see me that way?’
