Chapter 112 Part 2 – Is It Because of Tong Yi? (II)

Tong Xu paused for a bit before finally asking the question. “Did you reject me because of Tong Yi?”

Before Jiang Li could respond, Tong Yi interjected again. “Jiang Xiao Li rejected you because she doesn’t like you. Why do you always look for objective reasons? Ever think about the subjective ones?”

“I’m talking to Jiang Li. Can you not butt in?” Tong Xu frowned at him, then turned his eyes back to Jiang Li with a hopeful look.

Jiang Li raised an eyebrow slightly. “What Tong Yi said is exactly what I think. I really don’t like you, and it doesn’t have much to do with him.”

“Doesn’t have much to do with him? So it still has something to do with him, right?” Tong Xu pressed.

Jiang Li paused for two seconds, “If that’s how you want to see it, I have nothing to say.”

Her dislike for Tong Xu did, in part, have something to do with Tong Yi. The first time they met, Tong Xu pretended to be helping Tong Yi out, but in reality, he was belittling him in front of the wedding guests.

Yep, she was just that protective of her own—since she had taken Tong Yi as her nephew, of course she didn’t want to see anyone putting him down.

However, Tong Xu completely misunderstood what Jiang Li meant. He thought she had just publicly admitted that the reason she rejected him was because she liked Tong Yi.

The younger cousin who had overshadowed him since childhood, after wasting a few years in decline, had once again stepped on top of him. Not only had he surpassed him in career, but even the girl he liked had chosen him without hesitation.

Tong Xu felt a tightness in his chest. Looking at Jiang Li, he forced out the words with great difficulty: “Then… I wish you both happiness.”

Jiang Li frowned. She realized that Tong Xu had misunderstood her statement. But before she could say anything, Tong Yi grinned and said, “Even if you didn’t wish us happiness, we’d still be happy. But since you did offer your blessings, we’ll wish you happiness too.”

Jiang Li: “…”

Tong Xu’s “wish you both happiness” and Big Nephew’s “wish you happiness too” were clearly two completely different meanings.

But since Tong Xu had finally given up, it was probably best not to explain too much, lest he get the wrong idea again and come back to pester her.

As for this Big Nephew of hers—well, since he was so eager to beat Tong Xu, then so be it. It wasn’t her fault for taking advantage of his easily-misunderstood words.

Under the double attacks of Tong Yi’s provoking words and Jiang Li’s unbothered expression, Tong Xu knew there was no point in staying any longer. He walked over to his car and was about to open the door when a cleaning lady nearby came up and said, “Hey, hey, wait! You made such a mess here, and you’re just gonna leave without cleaning it up? That’s a bit much, don’t you think?”

Tong Xu took a deep breath and pulled out his phone. “Can you clean it up for me? Give me your QR code. I’ll send you some money.”

The cleaning lady nodded. “Sure, but don’t think you can skimp. At least pay the market rate.”

Seeing the money he transferred, her eyes lit up instantly. As soon as Tong Xu drove off, she turned to the crowd and said, “These roses are so pretty. Anyone want some? Feel free to take them home and put them in a vase—they should last a few days.”

Since Tong Xu’s confession had failed, the roses were now abandoned. The crowd was a bit hesitant at first, but once someone made the first move, everyone quickly rushed over to grab the flowers.

Wen Wan looked at Jiang Li and asked softly, “Can I also take a few?”

Before Jiang Li could answer, Tong Yi cut in, “Absolutely not.”

Wen Wan let out an “oh,” but her eyes stayed locked on the roses.

Seeing her looking so pitiful, Jiang Li chuckled. “If you want them, just go take some. Ignore him.”

Wen Wan shook her head. “Forget it. The roses aren’t guilty of anything, but just seeing them makes me think of that annoying guy Tong Xu.”

With so many people in the crowd, the roses and balloons were quickly snatched up. A girl, holding a few roses, passed by Jiang Li and Tong Yi and said, “Wishing you both happiness!”

Jiang Li was about to explain, but Tong Yi beamed and said, “Wishing you happiness too!”

Jiang Li: “…”

‘What’s with this guy? Is he showing early signs of dementia or something?’

Still, given how things looked, no one would believe her even if she tried to explain. Fortunately, the crowd was made up of strangers—so whether she said anything or not didn’t really make a difference.

“After we buy the ingredients, where are you planning to make the cake?” Tong Yi reached out and put his arm around Jiang Li’s shoulder.

“At my place,” Jiang Li replied. “The house my uncle gave me has always been maintained by part-time cleaners, but I’ve never actually stayed there. Kind of waste, honestly.”

“Then let’s all go there together!” Wen Wan immediately said. “It’ll be like an early housewarming. Should I call Lin Zhao too? It’ll be more fun with more people.”

Jiang Li reached out and gently pinched her cheek, teasing her with a smile, “I don’t mind you inviting Lin Zhao at all—you don’t need a housewarming as an excuse.”

Wen Wan was used to Jiang Li’s teasing and didn’t argue back. She just laughed and said, “Then I’ll call him now. He can be our second porter!”

Tong Yi grinned at Jiang Li. “How about I invite Qin Zheng as well? Call a few more friends, too. The more, the merrier.”

“You actually want a lively birthday party?” Jiang Li asked with a bit of surprise. Due to his personality, Tong Yi had always been a loner, and she’d always thought he didn’t like crowds.

“Yeah, inviting more people sounds good.” Tong Yi nodded. “I’ll have a chef come to cook, but as for the handmade cake, just one is enough—as long as there’s enough for the two of us.”

Wen Wan came back after finishing her call and caught the end of Tong Yi’s sentence. She immediately looped her arm around Jiang Li’s. “Jiang Li promised to teach me how to make a cake. If you won’t give me any, I’ll just make one myself!”

Tong Yi: “…”

That’s not what he meant! He just thought making a cake took effort, and if they invited too many people and Jiang Xiao Li had to make all the cakes, she’d get exhausted.

For the guests, he could simply order ready-made cakes. They wouldn’t be able to tell whether it was store-bought or homemade by Jiang Xiao Li, anyway.

“Making a cake isn’t hard.” Jiang Li laughed. “Let’s make a big one so everyone can have a share.”

“You won’t get tired?” Tong Yi asked.

Jiang Li shook her head. “Not at all. I’ve done it before.”

Hearing that, he finally dropped the subject.

After leaving the campus gates, Tong Xu sped through the streets. If it weren’t for the city’s speed limits, he would’ve driven even faster.

Half an hour later, his phone rang. He pulled over to take the call. As soon as he answered, Zhang Rongrong’s voice came through the phone.

“Hello, Mr. Tong. Did… did your confession succeed?” Zhang Rongrong asked cautiously.

Tong Xu let out a mocking smile, though his tone remained gentle. “Check your school’s forum. You should find your answer there.”

With that, Tong Xu hung up without hesitation, and then proceeded to block and delete all of Zhang Rongrong’s contact information.

A girl who wore all her thoughts on her face really thought he couldn’t see through her?
