Chapter 113 Part 2 – Do You Have Evidence? (II)
After her failed attempt to seek Qin Zheng’s help, Jiang Ruo returned to her rented apartment in a daze. Ever since the kidney incident was exposed, she hadn’t been able to return to school. Whenever she did, everyone looked at her differently, and many openly mocked and ridiculed her. Unable to face so much malice, she requested a long leave of absence.
The faculty, aware of her situation, approved it without hesitation. Jiang Ruo knew they were wary of her psychological condition and didn’t want anything to happen to her on the campus grounds, which would reflect badly on the university’s reputation.
Other than going out for dialysis, she barely left the apartment. Even for dialysis, she wore oversized clothes and a mask to avoid being recognized.
After finishing dialysis and returning home, the first thing she did was draw all the curtains. Only a sealed-off space gave her a sense of security. Without Bai Guolin, the place now felt cold and empty—thankfully, she still had the internet to keep up with the outside world.
What she cared about most, naturally, was the progression of Jiang Zhou and Bai Guolin’s criminal case. Unfortunately, she had no way of getting updates on the case. All she could do was wait day after day.
Whenever she had nothing to do, she couldn’t stop herself from browsing about Jiang Li—the person who had completely turned her life upside down. On the forum site of Capital Medical University, there was a lot of talk about Jiang Li. Every time she saw someone praising Jiang Li, Jiang Ruo would remember her old self—the smooth-sailing fifteen years she had lived before Jiang Li showed up.
Back then, she was the precious daughter of the Jiang family, a well-known child star. Her parents and brother doted on her, and her childhood friend Qin Zheng took care of her every feeling.
But now, her mother treated her like an enemy, her father had forced her to leave home, and her brother had ended up in a detention center because of her.
And Qin Zheng… Qin Zheng had long since given up on her. He had even chosen to stand with Jiang Li.
The ironic thing was that even knowing Qin Zheng had abandoned her, she was still using the bank card he had given her years ago—because she no longer had a way to make money on her own.
Jiang Ruo found it incredibly ironic. Barely six months ago, she could never have imagined her life would end up this bad.
In her boredom, she ended up seeking all kinds of information she could find about Jiang Li online. But the action only serves to deepen the sense of disparity in her heart. Many times over, she couldn’t stop herself from daydreaming: If only Jiang Li had chosen to cause a big scene back then, right after she had discovered that Brother had got the report showing they were kidney matches, Grandpa probably wouldn’t have given up on him.
If Grandpa hadn’t given up on Brother, maybe he’d already be out of detention by now—and I wouldn’t be all alone.
How does Jiang Li get to be so happy? Jiang Li isn’t some flawless saint—she had schemed against her own brother!
Jiang Ruo wanted to go to Old Master Feng and tell him all of this, but she knew all too well that he would never believe her—because he was Jiang Li’s grandfather, and she had no evidence.
Today she logged into the campus forum as usual, absentmindedly browsing for news about Jiang Li, when she unexpectedly came across a post about Tong Xu’s public confession.
Jiang Ruo let out a soft sigh. She must be obsessed—otherwise, why would she care so much about Jiang Li’s news?
But when she read that post, which mentioned how the two handsome men fought over Jiang Li, her expression changed drastically.
She had gone to Jiang Li before, hoping Jiang Li would plead with their grandfather, but was rejected without mercy. Afterward, a stranger advised her to seek out Tong Yi instead.
Of course, she would never consider asking for Tong Yi’s help—she knew exactly what kind of person he was. Unexpectedly, Tong Yi interfered when she approached Qin Zheng, mocking her as he revealed that Qin Zheng had sided with Jiang Li by telling her about Jiang Zhou’s scheme.
That’s how she found out that Jiang Li had schemed against her brother.
Going to Tong Yi was definitely not an option, but what about Tong Xu? Tong Xu was Tong Bingran’s only son. If he was willing to help, there might be hope for her brother.
Even if he refused to help, she could still use him to make Grandpa see Jiang Li’s true face.
If she could do that, maybe Grandpa would begin to feel some doubt toward Jiang Li—and then, perhaps, he’d choose to help her brother.
After all, Brother is also his grandson.
Once that thought clicked, Jiang Ruo was instantly energized. Finally, there was a glimmer of hope.
…
Following his botched confession, Tong Xu had no reason to remain in Beijing. Back in Minjiang, he began keeping a low profile, uneasy at the thought that Jiang Li might have complained to her uncle—he knew he wouldn’t stand a chance against Feng Qi’s retaliation.
When Jiang Ruo tried to stop Tong Xu as he exited a hotel after wrapping up a business meeting, he was caught off guard.
Tong Xu barely knew Jiang Ruo, so when he saw a masked girl blocking his path, he dismissed her as just another woman trying to cozy up to him for status. With a frown, he moved to step around her, wanting no part of whatever she was after.
But Jiang Ruo reached out to block his path. “Mr. Tong, may I have a word with you?”
“I don’t know you. There’s probably nothing to talk about.” Tong Xu’s tone was gentle, but his eyes held no warmth.
Jiang Ruo pulled down her mask. “Do you recognize me now, Mr. Tong?”
Tong Xu gave her a look. The girl seemed vaguely familiar, but he couldn’t figure out her identity, so he assumed she was some small-time celebrity or internet personality.
“I’m in a hurry to deal with business,” he said. “Please don’t block the way.”
Jiang Ruo felt a wave of embarrassment as she realized Tong Xu didn’t even recognize who she was.
Taking a deep breath, she said slowly, “I’m Jiang Ruo, the adopted daughter of the Jiang family. Does that ring any bells, Mr. Tong?”
Tong Xu paused, then blurted out, “You’re Jiang Huai’s illegitimate daughter?”
“…” Another wave of sadness washed over Jiang Ruo. No one could choose their birth; she was innocent, yet she could never tear off the label of being Jiang Huai’s illegitimate child.
Seeing her reaction, Tong Xu understood perfectly. He gave her a mocking look. “We really have nothing to talk about. Miss Jiang, can you move aside?”
When Jiang Ruo remained still, Tong Xu walked around her without hesitation, ready to leave.
Seeing this, Jiang Ruo quickly called out, “Mr. Tong, I want to talk to you about Jiang Li.”
“What? Jiang Li?” Tong Xu looked surprised. Even though she had rejected him so mercilessly, he still couldn’t stay indifferent when he heard her name.
Jiang Ruo nodded. “Yes, Jiang Li. I know a secret about her. Would Mr. Tong be interested in hearing it?”
Tong Xu hesitated for a few seconds, then shook his head. “As far as I know, you and Jiang Li are mostly strangers.”
“But I know her secret. I believe Mr. Tong will be interested.” Jiang Ruo said firmly.
“That’s too bad,” Tong Xu shook his head. “I’m not interested in whatever secret you’re referring to.”
Jiang Ruo hadn’t anticipated Tong Xu being so resolute. At first, she believed she could sway him into helping her brother, but after meeting him face-to-face, it became clear: this was not a man she could lead around by the nose. If persuasion wouldn’t work, then she’d have to change tactics—use him to open Grandpa’s eyes, to show him Jiang Li wasn’t the pure, innocent granddaughter he believed her to be.
As Tong Xu turned to leave again, she hurriedly called out, “Mr. Tong, this secret is about Jiang Li and Tong Yi. If Old Master Feng finds out, he will never allow them to be together.”
Tong Xu immediately stopped and turned back to look at her. “What exactly are you trying to say?”
Knowing she had piqued his interest, Jiang Ruo smiled. “What I’m saying is, my brother Jiang Zhou was rejected by his grandfather because of Tong Yi’s manipulation. His arrest also has something to do with Tong Yi.”
Back then, Jiang Li knew her brother was secretly bribing the Feng family doctor to conduct a kidney match test, yet she chose to stay silent. Whether it was her idea or Tong Yi’s, it made no difference to Jiang Ruo, but she knew Tong Xu would pin everything on Tong Yi.
The fact that her brother had been plotted and ended up being arrested for a criminal charge probably had little to do with Tong Yi. But that didn’t matter. All that mattered was making Tong Xu believe it.
If Tong Xu believed it, he’d try to verify it. And even if he found nothing, he’d still do what he could to convince Old Master Feng that Tong Yi was the mastermind behind his grandson’s arrest.
From Tong Xu’s perspective, if he could make Old Master Feng dislike Tong Yi, then he might have a shot at being with Jiang Li. From Jiang Ruo’s perspective, if she could make Old Master Feng believe Tong Yi was involved, he would naturally look to Jiang Li—because Tong Yi would only have done it for her.
And if that happened, Jiang Li would no longer be the pure, flawless granddaughter. Knowing Jiang Zhou had been schemed against by his own sister, the old man surely wouldn’t blame him anymore and, without a doubt, would step in to help him.
After listening to all this, Tong Xu was clearly tempted. Following a long pause, he finally asked, “Do you have any evidence?”
Jiang Ruo shook her head. “No, but I believe you are capable of finding it—aren’t you, Mr. Tong?”
