Chapter 124 Part 2 – I Won’t Let You Fall (II)
Trying to distract herself, Jiang Li glanced around and suddenly asked in surprise, “Hey, where did Wen Wan and Lin Zhao go?”
Tong Yi paused, then guessed, “Maybe they went to the haunted house?”
Jiang Li couldn’t help laughing. “Wen Wan probably wouldn’t go again. She’s just as scared of ghosts as you. When we went in earlier, she was terrified—but she recovered quickly after we came out, unlike you. You were so dramatic.”
Back then, after coming out of the haunted house, this guy clung to her and refused to let go. If she hadn’t threatened to hit him, he might’ve kept holding on for ages.
Tong Yi: “…”
‘Wen Wan really is scared of ghosts, but I had just been pretending, and that makes a big difference…’
Still, this was a secret he planned to keep from Jiang Xiao Li for life, so he decided to change this dangerous subject, “Jiang Xiao Li, let’s go try the water swing bridge. It looks pretty exciting.”
Jiang Li shook her head. “Better not. If we both fall in, that’d be way too exciting.”
She used the same excuse she’d used earlier with Wen Wan to turn him down, but Tong Yi obviously wasn’t about to give up. “I had the staff drain the water from the pool below. So even if we fall, it’s no big deal,” he grinned.
Jiang Li gave him a wide-eyed stare, “What’s the point then?” The thrill of the water swing bridge was precisely in the fear of falling into the water. Every step was nerve-racking because of that. Without the water, the fun would be greatly reduced.
Tong Yi grabbed her arm. “If you’re into thrill-seeking, then we won’t drain the water. Even if we fall in, it’s just like taking a bath and changing clothes. You mean to tell me you don’t even dare try that?”
Jiang Li glared at him. “Fine, let’s play. Even if you fall, there’s no way I’ll fall in.”
Tong Yi’s taunt wasn’t clever at all, but it worked. Jiang Li was provoked into a competitive mood. She followed him to the water swing bridge and decisively stepped onto the first swing.
Moving from the first swing to the second, Jiang Li was extremely cautious. The swings wobbled hard, and she had to keep her balance perfect to avoid falling. Fortunately, she was good at sports; after a few swings, she started to get the hang of it and didn’t find it that hard anymore. Even the water below didn’t seem that scary.
Tong Yi followed behind her, watching as she moved from tentative steps to graceful strides. He couldn’t help but think: ‘Well, there really isn’t anything in the world my Jiang Xiao Li can’t handle!’
Jiang Li was having fun. But just as she was nearing the other side, she noticed the gaps between swings getting wider and wider. Crossing safely was suddenly no longer so easy.
Noticing the increased difficulty, she became extra cautious again. But then, Tong Yi suddenly sped up and stepped onto the same swing she was on. As he landed, the swing behind them swung violently and tangled with the one they were standing on.
Feeling the swing shake violently, Jiang Li panicked and quickly grabbed the metal chain. Tong Yi was almost pressed up against her back, and she immediately gave him her fiercest glare. “Do you even know how to play this?!”
Tong Yi gave her an awkward smile. “I’ve played before, but it’s been a long time—I kind of forgot how it feels.”
Jiang Li: “…”
‘What a dumb excuse—if you want to fall into the water, fine, but don’t drag me with you!’
Although she had already considered the possibility of falling into the water before playing this game, now that she was so close to the end, she definitely didn’t want to fall.
Seeing the annoyed look on her face, Tong Yi said quietly, “I won’t let you fall.”
Jiang Li snorted. “That’s not really up to you, is it?” If she were alone, she could take her time adjusting her position and wait for the swing to steady before moving on, but with this guy tagging along, every move became precarious!
Tong Yi paused for a few seconds before speaking softly, “Let go of the chain and hold on to me. I’ll take you across.”
Jiang Li firmly shook her head. “More likely, you’ll drag me right into the water with you.”
Tong Yi: “…”
‘Well, this is exactly the Jiang Xiao Li I like—never relying on anyone, no matter the situation.’
Still, he wasn’t going to back down today. He suddenly crouched slightly, his breath brushing against her ear. “Jiang Xiao Li, if I can get you across without you even touching the water, will you trust me from now on?”
Jiang Li stubbornly shook her head. “Right now, I really don’t trust you at all. You better not piss me off, or once we’re back on land, I swear I’ll beat you until you cry.”
Tong Yi leaned closer, and just as Jiang Li turned her face away awkwardly, he suddenly smiled. “I’ll make you believe in me.”
With that, he suddenly let go of the chain and stepped one leg into the pool. The water was freezing cold, and the icy shock pierced through him, but he still smiled and reached out to her. “Come on, Jiang Xiao Li, let Brother Tong Yi carry you across.”
Jiang Li looked at the increasingly wide gaps between the swings ahead, then turned to glance at the annoying guy, who stubbornly stood in the water with his arms outstretched toward her. After five seconds of hesitation, she said, “If you call me ‘Aunt,’ I’ll reluctantly let you carry me.”
Smart people don’t take unnecessary losses. Since this Big Nephew of hers had already jumped in willingly, she wasn’t about to end up in the water passively.
Seeing the smug look on her face, Tong Yi chuckled softly and clearly said, “Okay, Aunt.”
The moment she heard the word, Jiang Li decisively let go of the chain and reached out to wrap her arms around Tong Yi’s neck. He immediately scooped her up in a bridal carry and began walking step by step toward the other side.
At that moment, Jiang Li suddenly realized her heart was beating a little faster.
After walking out of the pool, Tong Yi didn’t put her down right away. Feeling her struggle slightly in his arms, he said softly, “Wait a bit—I’ll set you down on the steps.”
So Jiang Li stopped struggling. He carried her about ten meters before gently setting her down on the steps, “Jiang Xiao Li, I told you—I wouldn’t let you touch even a drop of water.”
Standing on the steps, Jiang Li met Tong Yi’s gaze directly. For a moment, she felt like this familiar nephew suddenly looked a bit unfamiliar.
Just as she was about to tell him to go change his pants and shoes, her phone in her pocket suddenly rang. Jiang Li pulled it out and saw that it was a call from Feng Qi.
When she answered, his magnetic voice came through the phone. “I’m at the gate of your campus. Are you coming out, or should I come in to find you?”
Jiang Li said in surprise, “Uncle, are you in Beijing?”
Feng Qi chuckled lightly. “If I didn’t come to celebrate your birthday, you’d probably complain about it for a long time, wouldn’t you?”
That made Jiang Li laugh. If her Third Uncle really had forgotten her birthday, she wouldn’t be mad—but as he said, she would definitely bring it up for quite a while.
“I’m out right now, but I can head over right away. Just wait for me a bit—it’ll take about twenty minutes by taxi,” she said.
Tong Yi: “…”
Of all the times Third Master Feng could’ve shown up, why did it have to be today?
