Chapter 129 Part 1 – Can You Promise Me First? (I)

Wen Wan felt that something was very off about Lin Zhao today. She looked up at him and asked suspiciously, “Are you really the Lin Zhao I know?”

“Do you need me to prove it?” He sighed helplessly.

Wen Wan immediately nodded and whispered, “It’s better if you do.”

Lin Zhao was silent for a moment before he said, “When you were six, you used to still wet your bed…”

“You’re not allowed to say anymore!” Wen Wan stomped her foot. Digging up something from so long ago—how could he be so mean? Hmph!

Seeing her face flush bright red, Lin Zhao’s mood immediately improved. He said with a chuckle, “You were the one who asked me to prove it. Why are you getting mad now?”

Wen Wan huffed, “Then why did you talk like that about Third Uncle just now?”

Lin Zhao’s good mood vanished instantly. “He’s Jiang Li’s Third Uncle, not yours. Why are you calling him that so naturally?”

Wen Wan shot back right away, “Jiang Li and I are good friends. Her Third Uncle is my Third Uncle too. What’s the difference?”

Lin Zhao gave her a look. “So you think of him as an elder?”

Before responding, she thought for a moment. “Not exactly, I guess,” said she. “I feel like Third Uncle doesn’t put on any airs of an elder. He’s easy to get along with.”

More mature than a big brother, but less stern than an actual elder—if she had to give him a label, she thought “idol” would suit him best.

Lin Zhao gave her a look of disbelief. “He’s over thirty, you know that, right?”

“I know, but he doesn’t look like he’s over thirty at all. Don’t you think so?” She countered.

Lin Zhao: “…”

After ten seconds of stunned silence, he finally couldn’t hold back. “To me, over thirty is already an old man. Even if he looks young, he’s not actually young. I’m sure he has a bunch of old-man habits.”

Wen Wan was stunned for a while before she finally realized something: the reason Lin Zhao kept badmouthing Jiang Li’s uncle might be because she had been praising him too much.

Could that mean… Lin Zhao was jealous? Saying all those childish things just to try to point out the uncle’s flaws?

Realizing this made Wen Wan’s cheeks flush slightly, and her heartbeat quickened.

Seeing her expression, Lin Zhao was suddenly overcome by a sense of dread, now seriously suspecting that perhaps—just perhaps—she had developed feelings for Feng Qi. Otherwise, why else would she blush at the mere mention of his name?

He stared seriously at Wen Wan and spoke, “Wanwan, you’re still a minor. You can’t be dating yet.”

Wen Wan stared down at her toes and replied in a very quiet voice, “But I’m already a university student. Even if I was dating, I don’t think it’s a big deal.”

Lin Zhao placed a hand on her shoulder. “You promised me before that you wouldn’t date until you came of age. We even pinky-swore. You can’t go back on that.”

Wen Wan quietly retorted, “Then… what if I do go back on it? What are you going to do?”

Lin Zhao’s voice turned low. “You can’t break your word. If you do, I’ll be sad.”

Wen Wan finally looked up at him. “Then do you like anyone right now?”

Lin Zhao averted his gaze awkwardly. “I haven’t thought about dating for now. And I promised you before, not until you’re an adult.”

Wen Wan softly repeated, “I asked if you like anyone, not when you’re going to date.”

“I… I don’t know how to answer that,” Lin Zhao said honestly. Before today, he always thought of Wanwan as a little sister. But when he heard those people jokingly pairing her with Jiang Li’s uncle, he suddenly felt a sense of crisis.

At that moment, he suddenly realized—it’s not that he can’t accept Wanwan dating as a minor, he simply can’t accept her dating someone else.

But… Wanwan still had more than twenty days before her next birthday, and even then, she would only turn seventeen. He really shouldn’t be having these kinds of thoughts.

“Why don’t you know what to say?” Wen Wan asked in confusion.

“I’ve fallen for a girl, but I can’t confess just yet, so I don’t know how to say it.” He replied softly.

Wen Wan felt a strange sense of anticipation rise in her chest. She asked in a quiet voice, “You can’t confess yet… so when can you?”

Lin Zhao was silent for a long while before replying, “One year and twenty-two days.”

His reason told him he shouldn’t be saying these things to Wanwan, but he was truly worried she might try to get closer to Jiang Li’s uncle out of admiration.

What worried him even more was that her admiration for Feng Qi might turn into fondness, and then into love. If that happened, he would no longer have any standing to say anything to her.

Wen Wan: “…”

Twenty-two days from now would be her seventeenth birthday, and one year after that, she would turn exactly eighteen.

‘Is Lin Zhao… confessing to me?’

‘Then, did his hostility toward Third Uncle earlier really come from jealousy?’

Seeing Wen Wan’s adorably dazed expression, Lin Zhao reached out and took her hand. “Wanwan, you promised me you wouldn’t date before coming of age. You have to keep your promise.”

“Fine, I won’t. It’s not such a big deal, anyway. Since I promised, I’ll keep it.” Wen Wan whispered. At that moment, she felt immense gratitude toward Feng Qi. If it hadn’t been for him, this wooden block might not have figured things out until who knows when!

‘Third Uncle is indeed the perfect idol!’

After leaving the hotel, the group headed toward the KTV. Since it was just across the street, they walked on foot. With Feng Qi gone, Tong Yi no longer held back—he quickly caught up to Jiang Li and strolled alongside her.

“I noticed that when my Third Uncle was around, you seemed especially well-behaved. Was I imagining things?” Jiang Li looked at him with a smile.

“Nonsense,” Tong Yi blurted out.

Seeing Jiang Li’s smile turn dangerous, he continued, “Even when your Third Uncle’s not around, I’m super well-behaved too. Don’t you think so?”

Jiang Li: “…”

‘This kid is getting more and more shameless!’

“Jiang Xiao Li, was your birthday cake today tasty?” He changed the topic, looking at her with eager eyes.

“Did you really make that cake?” She asked back.

“Of course!” He nodded eagerly. “No one else could’ve made such a delicious cake except me.”

“I could tell it was your cake because I’ve eaten your baking before—not because it was particularly tasty. You should have some self-awareness,” Jiang Li shrugged him off.

Of course, Tong Yi wasn’t discouraged at all and even grinned. “It was certainly one of a kind; otherwise, you wouldn’t have recognized it.”

Jiang Li countered, “Of course it was one of a kind. Every cake in this world is unique. Even you couldn’t make two exactly the same.”

Tong Yi took on a surprisingly agreeable tone. “You’re the birthday girl today, so whatever you say is right. I’m not arguing.”

Jiang Li stopped the banter and glanced around. “Where’s Wen Wan? She didn’t follow us. And Lin Zhao’s missing too.”

Tong Yi laughed. “Don’t tell me you didn’t notice—Lin Zhao was jealous tonight.”

“Jealous? Of who?” Jiang Li was completely baffled. In her mind, Wen Wan was just a very shy girl who hardly spoke to boys. Even if Lin Zhao wanted to get jealous, there was no reason.

Besides, it had always been Wen Wan secretly crushing on Lin Zhao, while the guy seemed to treat her only as a little sister. Even if Wen Wan chatted with some boy, Lin Zhao shouldn’t get jealous, should he?

Seeing that she genuinely hadn’t caught on, Tong Yi grinned mischievously, “Think carefully—who was Wen Wan talking to the most during dinner?”

She thought for a moment, then her eyes widened in shock. “Don’t tell me you’re saying Lin Zhao was jealous… of my Third Uncle?”

Tong Yi nodded and gave her a thumbs-up. “Smart.”

Jiang Li: “…”

‘That’s way too absurd!’

“Has Lin Zhao gone mad? Doesn’t he realize that it’s totally impossible?” Jiang Li found it utterly unbelievable.

Tong Yi chuckled, “That’s because you have no idea how charismatic Third Master Feng really is.”

No one could deny that Third Master Feng had charisma. Even if he weren’t a big name in the medical world, just that face of his—so similar to his equally charming niece—would be enough to attract an army of face-obsessed admirers.

But Wen Wan was just a little girl. Her feelings for Master Feng were nothing more than pure admiration. Only an idiot like Lin Zhao, caught up in the situation, would start getting all anxious and insecure.
