Chapter 129 Part 2 – Can You Promise Me First? (II)
After hearing Tong Yi’s comment, Jiang Li said helplessly, “No matter how charming my Third Uncle is, Lin Zhao really has nothing to worry about.”
Because Wen Wan had even said that she’d had a crush on Lin Zhao since junior high.
Tong Yi put an arm around Jiang Li’s shoulder. “Jiang Xiao Li, can you sing?”
Jiang Li raised an eyebrow. “Anyone can.”
Even though she’d never sung in public before, memorizing tunes was easy for her.
Tong Yi asked again, “Then sing a little something for me, just a few lines?”
Jiang Li paused, then hummed a recently popular song. After hearing her voice, Tong Yi felt a wave of relief wash over him.
He’d never heard Jiang Xiao Li sing before, so he’d been worried she might be completely tone-deaf. If that were true, singing at the KTV later could’ve been social suicide. But now, it was clear his concerns had been entirely unfounded.
Qin Zheng, walking behind them, felt like he was being force-fed dog food. This scheming bastard Tong Yi was definitely sneaky—when Jiang Li’s uncle was around, he acted like a hardworking young man focused on making money with no time for love, only showing his true color the moment Third Master Feng left.
The only question was whether Jiang Li liked him back, or if she was the frog being slowly boiled in warm water. Even if it was the latter, Tong Yi still had a pretty good chance of winning her over, because Jiang Li clearly treated him differently from other guys.
Once inside the KTV private room, the staff quickly brought in drinks and snacks. But instead of rushing to drink, everyone clamored for the birthday girl to sing the first song.
Jiang Li didn’t refuse. She picked a classic and sang it. While she didn’t have amazing vocal talent, she stayed on pitch and did well enough. As soon as she put down the microphone, everyone clapped enthusiastically.
After that, a few microphone hogs took turns singing. Others, uninterested in singing, proposed playing games and drinking. Since it was a close group of friends, Jiang Li didn’t mind joining in.
They played cards for over half an hour. Many people had to drink after losing rounds, but Jiang Li didn’t touch a single drop—because she never lost.
Wang Simin finally caught on and looked at her with amazement, “Don’t tell me… you can count cards?”
Jiang Li replied curiously, “Don’t you?”
Wang Simin sighed. “Of course we try to, but you said earlier you didn’t know how to play this game.”
Jiang Li nodded and explained, “I didn’t before. But once you explained the rules, I figured it out.”
Wang Simin: “…”
‘Why did I ever think playing cards with a top student was a good idea?!’
Wen Wan had also lost two rounds earlier, but Lin Zhao had drunk for her, so she was still very clear-headed. Seeing Jiang Li play with such confidence, she whispered, “Jiang Li won’t lose, no way.”
Someone then quietly suggested, “How about we play Truth or Dare? Spin the bottle, and whoever it lands on has to answer a question. If they don’t want to answer, they can drink instead.”
Jiang Li didn’t particularly like Truth or Dare—she disliked situations where things were out of her control. But since the person who suggested it explained the rules ahead of time, and the game was fairly relaxed, she figured it wasn’t a big deal. You could drink instead of answering if you wanted, after all.
Tong Yi had thought the game was childish, but the moment he saw Jiang Li agree to play, he joined in too.
For the first few rounds, the bottle didn’t land on Jiang Li, and the questions others were asked were all quite tame, so she gradually let her guard down.
Then, when the bottle landed on Tong Yi, she immediately gloated, “You lost!”
Tong Yi looked at Wang Simin, who had spun the bottle. “Go ahead, ask. I’ll see if I can answer.”
Wang Simin grinned and asked, “When was the first time you felt your heart move for a girl?”
It wasn’t even a tough question. Everyone thought Tong Yi would just answer it, but to their surprise, he picked up a glass of liquor from the table and downed it in one gulp.
Jiang Li asked in surprise, “Is that question really so hard to answer?”
Tong Yi smiled mysteriously. “According to the rules, I can choose to drink.”
He couldn’t exactly admit that it took a wet dream for him to realize he had feelings for Jiang Xiao Li, could he?
Jiang Li paused for a few seconds, then asked, “You don’t want to answer that question?”
If that was the case, it meant this guy really had been moved by a girl before—otherwise, he would’ve just answered directly.
He had said before that he’d never been in a relationship, but he’d never said he hadn’t liked anyone. Maybe he had confessed and been rejected, and that’s why he didn’t want to answer?
“That should count as a second question, don’t you think?” Tong Yi looked at her with a smile.
Jiang Li: “…”
After a few seconds, she suddenly said, “I’ll spin the bottle this time.”
The beer bottle was spun with practiced ease. When it finally stopped, everyone saw that the bottle was once again pointing at Tong Yi.
Jiang Li fired her question, “What’s the name of the girl you like?”
Tong Yi clearly froze. After a few seconds, he picked up a glass from the table and downed it in one gulp.
Jiang Li: “…”
The more mysterious Tong Yi acted, the more curious she became! So she spun the bottle again, landing on Tong Yi once more.
“There is someone you like, right?”
Tong Yi had a strong feeling that if he chose to drink again, Jiang Xiao Li would definitely get mad. He hesitated for a few seconds, then finally nodded and said, “Yes.”
Jiang Li: “…”
Even though he had finally answered the question she asked, she didn’t feel the satisfaction she thought she would.
Why is that?
Qin Zheng immediately noticed the tension between the two. Trying to break the awkwardness, he reached for the bottle and said, “Let me give it a spin this time.”
He gave it a casual spin, and to everyone’s surprise, the bottle once again pointed at Tong Yi.
“…”
Even Qin Zheng was stunned. When Jiang Li had spun the bottle earlier, he’d suspected she might’ve done it on purpose. But his own spin had been completely random—who would’ve thought Tong Yi could be this unlucky?
Clearing his throat, Qin Zheng decided to throw him a lifeline and asked, “Is the girl you like… Jiang Li?”
As soon as the words left his mouth, everyone in the room turned to look at Tong Yi, waiting to see how he’d answer. The guys from Jiang Li’s campus, in particular, watched him with keen anticipation.
Tong Yi had often come to see Jiang Li at school, and the two of them always seemed very close. A lot of the guys had assumed they were already a couple and gave up on pursuing Jiang Li.
But judging from how things looked tonight, they clearly weren’t dating. And if the girl Tong Yi actually liked wasn’t Jiang Li, did that mean… they had a chance?
Even if the odds were low, they should at least try. Better to make the effort than regret it later.
Jiang Li hadn’t expected Qin Zheng to ask that kind of question. She found it a bit ridiculous—but still, for some reason, she turned to look at Tong Yi, curious about how he would answer.
Tong Yi glanced at her, then reached for a glass again. Jiang Li instantly grew angry and pressed down on his hand. “This question shouldn’t be that hard to answer, right?”
As soon as she said that, she felt like she might’ve overreacted—as if she were forcing him to answer. But now that the words were out, taking them back would be even more awkward.
The hand holding the glass was now pinned under hers, and Tong Yi’s heartbeat began to race. He realized he couldn’t keep using the game’s rules to avoid the issue.
And this—this was his chance to finally tell Jiang Xiao Li how he felt. If he missed it, who knew when the next one would come?
So Tong Yi turned to look directly at Jiang Li, holding her gaze for over ten seconds before finally speaking in a hoarse voice: “Before I answer that question, can you promise me something first? No matter what my answer is, you can’t ignore me, and you absolutely can’t avoid me either.”
