Wen Wan suddenly popped her head out and asked that question. Jiang Li, both amused and exasperated, put on a stern face and replied seriously, “Of course not. Kids your age should stick to cartoons and Andersen’s fairy tales.”
At that moment, she and Tong Yi were standing outside the room, while Wen Wan was still inside. As soon as she finished speaking, Tong Yi reached out and closed the door, sealing Wen Wan off in another space. Then he turned to her and said softly, “Jiang Xiao Li, I really was drunk last night, and I truly thought I was dreaming. But everything I said—I meant it.”
Seeing her didn’t respond, he continued, “The girl I like is you. From the beginning, it’s only ever been you, and that won’t change. I mean every word.”
Jiang Li felt her heartbeat quicken. Last night, Tong Yi had said those words while drunk—but now, he was completely sober.
Back then, his sudden move had caught her off guard, leaving her flustered. But this time, she was ready and managed to stay composed.
After a long pause, Jiang Li finally heard her own voice say, “When did it start?”
Tong Yi was stunned for a second before realizing she was asking when he had started liking her. But when he remembered that she hadn’t even turned seventeen at the time, he hesitated—should I tell her the truth?
Jiang Li instantly saw through his hesitation and frowned. “Don’t tell me you’re trying to make something up.”
“I’m just worried that if I tell the truth, you’ll be angry.”
“So you’re worried I’ll be angry, and your solution is to lie to me?”
Tong Yi immediately shook his head. “I’m not lying. It was on your brother’s wedding day that I realized how I felt about you.”
As soon as he said that, Jiang Li was completely stunned. Her eldest brother had gotten married during the National Day holiday of her second year of high school—more than two years ago now.
Which meant Tong Yi had liked her for over two years without her ever noticing.
But thinking back, there had been signs. After the wedding, when she sent him off at the airport, he hugged her goodbye and gave her a card, saying it was some kind of dividend for her early investment.
On her seventeenth birthday, he sent her eleven lipsticks but couldn’t explain what the number meant. Later, a little girl selling flowers told her eleven meant “forever”.
On her eighteenth birthday, Tong Yi had flown back from abroad just to celebrate with her in the city where she was attending a training camp—though he’d claimed it was because he had business in the country and was just stopping by.
After the college entrance exams, when Tong Xu showed up at her class reunion trying to get close to her, Tong Yi had found out and teamed up with Feng Bai to sabotage him.
So really, it wasn’t like there hadn’t been clues—she had just never paid attention to the details.
When Tong Yi saw that Jiang Li didn’t respond after he told the truth, he thought she was angry. After hesitating for a while, he couldn’t help but say, “Jiang Xiao Li, please don’t be mad at me, okay?”
Jiang Li returned to her senses and said in surprise, “Why would I be mad at you?”
Tong Yi was clearly caught off guard. It took him several seconds before he muttered, “You’re really not mad?”
Jiang Li looked at him, puzzled. “And what exactly should I be mad about?”
Tong Yi said honestly, “I started falling for you a few months before you turned seventeen. Aren’t you angry about that?”
Jiang Li narrowed her eyes. “I wasn’t thinking about that at all… but now that you mention it, maybe I should be mad.”
Tong Yi: “…”
Seeing him completely freeze up, Jiang Li couldn’t hold back her laughter anymore. She poked his arm and asked, “Are you dumb or what?”
“Huh?” Tong Yi was stunned again. “You’re really not mad?”
Jiang Li looked at him. “Why would I be?”
Sure, she hadn’t been an adult yet back then, but she was almost seventeen. And Tong Yi only had feelings for her without doing anything inappropriate. So why would she be mad?
Tong Yi replied truthfully, “When Tong Xu confessed to you and said he’d fallen for you at your brother’s wedding, you seemed really angry.”
Jiang Li rolled her eyes at him. “You think Tong Xu is even comparable to you?”
What a fool! When she was sixteen, Tong Xu was already over twenty—a working adult falling at first sight for an underage high schooler? That was absurd.
Besides, her dislike for Tong Xu wasn’t just about that. If he hadn’t used such a cringeworthy way to confess in public—or if he’d taken the rejection nicely and moved on—she wouldn’t have been so angry.
But Tong Xu had chosen the worst way to confess, and even after failing, kept clinging and saying disgusting things. Who wouldn’t be mad?
As for Tong Yi, he was only a few years older than her. Having a crush at that age… seemed pretty normal.
After hearing what Jiang Li said, Tong Yi was briefly stunned, then his face lit up with pure joy. He grabbed the hand she’d used to poke his arm. “Jiang Xiao Li, you do have feelings for me, don’t you?”
If she didn’t, she would never have said what she just did. That meant his feelings weren’t one-sided!
Seeing how openly delighted he was, Jiang Li gave a small cough and said, “I… I didn’t say I agreed to date you.”
Tong Yi immediately responded, “I only just started pursuing you. Of course you wouldn’t agree right away. As long as you don’t shut me out, I’m good.”
His attitude genuinely surprised Jiang Li. “And what if I never agree?”
He replied without a pause, “If you keep refusing me, I’ll just keep pursuing you—until you say yes.”
His tone and expression were so sincere that Jiang Li couldn’t bring herself to reject him. After a long pause, she asked in a soft voice, “I haven’t even agreed to date you, and you’re already holding my hand—isn’t that a bit inappropriate?”
Tong Yi immediately let go of her hand and smiled ingratiatingly. “Let’s eat the soup dumplings first. They’ll go cool soon.”
Before Jiang Li could say anything, he quickly added, “If you don’t like soup dumplings anymore, I’ll go buy something else for you.”
Jiang Li reached out and took the food bag from his hand, replying with a haughty tone, “Whether I like them or not depends on my mood.”
Tong Yi promised at once, “I’ll make sure to take care of your mood at all times.”
Jiang Li: “…”
She had to admit, ever since he confessed, this Big Nephew of hers had become ridiculously smooth—it was like someone had unlocked his full potential.
As she took small bites of the soup dumplings, a thought crossed her mind: Now that Tong Yi has confessed, that makes him my pursuer, so calling him “big nephew” may not really be appropriate anymore…
Before she could sort out that internal dilemma, the door behind her opened. Wen Wan, spotting the dumplings in Jiang Li’s hand, immediately lit up. “Are you two dating now?”
From what Wen Wan knew about this roommate of hers, if they weren’t dating, Jiang Li wouldn’t have accepted food from Tong Yi. And if they were dating, then her being locked in the room earlier was totally worth it!
Before Jiang Li could respond, Tong Yi smiled and said, “Not yet, but from now on, you can call me ‘Jiang Xiao Li’s pursuer.'”
Wen Wan looked like she wanted to ask more, but Jiang Li handed her a soup dumpling. “Want one?”
Wen Wan nodded at once. “Of course! Good food should never go to waste.”
While eating, the girl looked up at Tong Yi. “You’re quite the dedicated pursuer, huh? Buying soup dumplings for Jiang Li first thing in the morning.”
Tong Yi smirked. “Want me to tell Lin Zhao so you get soup dumplings tomorrow too?”
Wen Wan’s cheeks flushed slightly, and she whispered, “No need for that. Lin Zhao and I aren’t even at the same campus—it’s just not realistic.”
Back in high school, Lin Zhao had brought her snacks every day. Looking back now, those memories felt really sweet.
“Did you have breakfast yet?” Jiang Li looked at Tong Yi, who shook his head. “I’ll grab something simple later.”
“Have a few yourself.” She handed him the food bag. “Wen Wan and I can’t finish all by ourselves.”
Wen Wan: “…”
‘My appetite is actually pretty big, though.’
Still, since Tong Yi bought the dumplings, it made perfect sense for him to eat some—that was only fair.
Tong Yi took one dumpling and popped it into his mouth, but his eyes never left Jiang Li. She noticed his stare and shot him a glare—Tong Yi didn’t even try to hide it, and getting caught didn’t make him flustered at all.
He just thought Jiang Xiao Li even looked pretty when she was glaring.
Wen Wan glanced at Tong Yi, then at Jiang Li, and showed a puzzled expression. They were clearly just a pursuer and the one being pursued… so why did it feel like she was being force-fed a mouthful of dog food?
…
After the confession, Tong Yi continued texting Jiang Li regularly and still showed up at her school often. While their interactions remained largely the same, her mindset had clearly shifted.
After finals ended, Jiang Li began packing to go home. While organizing her things, she suddenly remembered something: she had once promised her third uncle that if she ever wanted to start dating, she’d let him know in advance—so he could help vet the guy. But over the past few days, she’d completely forgotten about that.
She felt a little guilty… but since she hadn’t officially agreed to date Tong Yi yet, she felt justified. It wasn’t too late to report now.
After finishing her packing, she called Feng Qi, cautiously bringing up the topic after some casual chatting: “Uncle, if I were to get a boyfriend someday, what kind of guy would you want me to date?”
Feng Qi was silent for a few seconds before asking, “You like someone?”
Jiang Li immediately denied it. “No, no—I’m just asking casually.”
But Feng Qi didn’t answer her question. “Then what kind of boyfriend you want?”
Jiang Li thought for a bit and said, “What if it’s a classmate I’ve known for years and really trust—would that be okay?”
Feng Qi: “…”
A classmate she’s known for years and trusts deeply? Only one name came to mind.
Qin Zheng.
