Chapter 133 – Qin Zheng Isn’t Good Enough
Chapter 133 – Qin Zheng Isn’t Good Enough
After Jiang Li described the type of boyfriend she wanted, she waited for her uncle’s response—but the receiver remained silent.
What Jiang Li didn’t know was that, at that very moment, her uncle Feng Qi was mentally evaluating Qin Zheng. In Feng Qi’s impression, Xiao Lizi and Qin Zheng were junior high classmates. They’d competed together in academic contests during high school and chatted often on weekends—by all accounts, they knew each other well.
After the college entrance exam, Jiang Zhou had bribed the Feng family’s private doctor to steal a blood sample from Xiao Lizi for a match with Jiang Ruo. Qin Zheng had immediately informed Xiao Lizi when he found out, which Feng Qi considered a decent move.
Objectively speaking, Feng Qi thought Qin Zheng was a fairly good kid—not especially outstanding in any area, but with no glaring flaws either.
But from the standpoint of a future uncle-in-law? That boy’s flaws were endless.
Feng Qi didn’t think he was being too picky—it was simply that from any angle, Qin Zheng wasn’t good enough for his Xiao Lizi.
The continued silence made Jiang Li uneasy. She tentatively called out, “Uncle?”
Feng Qi came back to his senses and responded concisely, “Qin Zheng isn’t suitable.”
“Huh?” Jiang Li was confused. ‘Did Uncle actually think I have been talking about Qin Zheng?’
Then again, the qualities she’d just listed did kind of fit Qin Zheng. She was about to explain, but Feng Qi spoke first.
“Qin Zheng used to have a relationship with Jiang Ruo—that shows he has poor taste. He never scored higher than you on any exam in school—that shows a lack of intelligence. His parents once agreed to an arranged marriage with the Jiang family—that shows there’s a problem with his family too. So no, I’m not satisfied with Qin Zheng.”
Jiang Li: “…”
‘Qin Zheng was supposed to be the male lead of this novel, after all. How did he suddenly become so worthless in Uncle’s eyes?’
Feng Qi’s sudden harsh opinion must’ve stemmed from a misunderstanding of her earlier comment. In other words, Qin Zheng was unjustly being implicated by her.
So Jiang Li couldn’t help defending him a little. “Uncle, I don’t think Qin Zheng is as bad as you say.”
Feng Qi paused again for a few seconds, “Explain to me, then. In what way is he not bad?”
Jiang Li answered honestly, “Among people my age, Qin Zheng is pretty outstanding. Back in high school, he was considered an idol by a lot of girls—even in our class, plenty of girls had crushes on him.”
Feng Qi immediately countered, “That’s only because the boys at your school weren’t up to par. Those girls were simply deluded.”
“But among our peers, Qin Zheng really is quite good, don’t you think?” Jiang Li tried to persuade him. She emphasized “our peers” because she was worried Feng Qi was comparing Qin Zheng to himself—and if that was the standard, Qin Zheng didn’t stand a chance.
Feng Qi answered without hesitation, “I don’t think so. Among your three older brothers, which of them isn’t better than him?”
Jiang Li: “…”
“Don’t you think your three brothers are all much better than Qin Zheng?” Feng Qi pressed.
Jiang Li sighed, “I said peers, didn’t I? Eldest Brother aside, even Second and Third Brothers are not our cohorts—they don’t count.”
Feng Qi let out a casual “Oh,” then added, “If you want someone your age, that’s easy—Tong Yi’s already miles better than Qin Zheng.”
“Huh?” Jiang Li was confused again. She’d originally been talking about Tong Yi, but her uncle had assumed she meant Qin Zheng. Now she mentioned Qin Zheng, and her uncle circled back to Tong Yi.
It felt… quite peculiar.
Feng Qi thought she didn’t agree with him, so he elaborated, “Tong Yi’s parents died when he was young. He has a greedy uncle trying to take over the family business. Yet he still managed to rise above it all—doesn’t that prove he’s better than Qin Zheng?”
Jiang Li: “…”
She actually agreed with those. But since Tong Yi was her current pursuer, if she echoed those compliments, it would sound like she was being arrogant, wouldn’t it? So she quietly replied, “I think maybe Tong Yi isn’t quite as great as you’re saying?”
Feng Qi continued persuading her. “Tong Yi is great. He’s smarter than Qin Zheng, has a better temperament, and will definitely earn more money in the future. And don’t forget—Qin Zheng’s mom is notoriously difficult, while Tong Yi doesn’t have any crazy relatives.”
Jiang Li: “…”
She had no way to argue with that. Could Big Nephew really be that good? If her uncle spoke so highly of him, maybe he was pretty great…
“Xiao Lizi, when you said you wanted to date a longtime classmate you know well, you weren’t talking about Qin Zheng, were you?”
Jiang Li immediately denied it. “Of course not, Uncle! You’re overthinking things.”
Feng Qi clearly didn’t believe her. “Really?”
“Absolutely not. How could I lie to you? I promised I’d let you check on the guy, didn’t I? Since you think Qin Zheng isn’t good in any way, how could I choose him? Unless I’ve gone crazy.”
Anyway, she didn’t have any feelings for Qin Zheng, so naturally she went along with Feng Qi’s views—better to let Uncle think she was a super obedient little angel.
“Mm. As long as you know what you’re doing, that’s fine. Just treat my advice as a reference,” Feng Qi said in his usual easygoing tone.
Jiang Li immediately said, “Don’t worry, Uncle. There’s no way I’d ever go for Qin Zheng. I’m heading to the airport now—talk later!”
“Mhm, bye,” Feng Qi replied gently. Once the call disconnected, he immediately rang Feng Bai, who was a bit surprised to see his number pop up.
“Third Uncle, what’s up?”
“Xiao Lizi is coming home today. Go pick her up from the airport,” said Feng Qi.
“No problem.” Feng Bai replied at once. “She lands at 7 p.m.—perfect timing after work.”
“When you’re there, see if she’s traveling with Qin Zheng. If so, pay close attention to how they interact,” Feng Qi instructed. This kind of “break them up before it starts” task wasn’t something he could do himself as her uncle—it was better handled by Feng Bai.
Feng Bai was shocked. “Qin Zheng has his eyes on our Xiao Jiang Li?”
Feng Qi replied very calmly, “It’s not confirmed yet.”
“No way! Just the fact that he used to date Jiang Ruo is enough reason to disqualify him—there’s no way I’d support him being with our Xiao Jiang Li,” Feng Bai said, clearly agitated.
“I agree. That’s why I need you to check it out,” said Feng Qi.
Feng Bai immediately replied, “Leave it to me. I’ll leave work early and head to the airport to see if they’re on the same flight.”
“Well, I trust you to do the job.” Feng Qi said in a gentle voice.
Feng Bai: “…”
Why’s Third Uncle suddenly being so polite? It’s kind of unsettling!
…
Jiang Li slung her backpack over her shoulder and left the campus to meet up with Tong Yi waiting outside. As soon as she stepped through the campus gates, Tong Yi came over and took her backpack. “You’re traveling this light?”
Jiang Li pointed at his suitcase. “Didn’t you only pack one bag too?”
Tong Yi grinned. “Men don’t need much. We’re not as high-maintenance as you girls.”
Jiang Li: “…”
It wasn’t wrong for a guy in his early twenties to call himself a man, but it still felt slightly off somehow.
The two took a cab to the airport. After boarding the plane, Tong Yi started organizing his things, and Jiang Li suddenly noticed Qin Zheng sitting not far away. She smiled and waved at him. Qin Zheng looked surprised to see her with Tong Yi. “Didn’t expect we’d be on the same flight.”
Tong Yi sat down next to Jiang Li and said, “We’re all going back to the same place—not that surprising.”
Jiang Li twisted his arm. “Can’t you speak like a normal person?”
Tong Yi quickly turned to Qin Zheng and said politely, “Yeah, it’s a surprise. Never thought we’d run into you here.”
Qin Zheng: “…”
This version of Tong Yi was even creepier than his usual self. Honestly, the old sarcastic one was easier to deal with!
Over the next two-plus hours, the three chatted here and there, and time passed quickly. When they arrived at the arrivals area, Jiang Li was surprised to find that her driver hadn’t come—instead, it was her third brother, Feng Bai.
She ran over excitedly. “Third Brother, you actually came to pick me up?”
Feng Bai grinned and ruffled her hair affectionately. “Of course I did. It’s been a while—did you miss your third brother?”
Jiang Li nodded. “Of course I did! I even got you a gift. It should be delivered today.”
Feng Bai looked pleased. “Mm-mm, that’s our good girl.”
Though Qin Zheng didn’t know Feng Bai well, they were acquaintances anyway, so he stepped forward politely to greet him. “Hi, Brother Feng.”
His tone was gentle and respectful, but Feng Bai frowned with displeasure. “Don’t get ahead of yourself. I’m not your brother.”
Then he patted Tong Yi on the shoulder. “Good job, Big Nephew. Carrying Xiao Jiang Li’s bag like a true gentleman—very filial.”
In contrast, Qin Zheng just stood there looking idle—all eager to make connections but had done no work. How could someone like that ever be worthy of their Xiao Jiang Li?
Qin Zheng: “…”
He wasn’t sure if it was just his imagination, but Feng Bai’s gaze made him feel like… merchandise being appraised.
Hopefully, that was just his imagination!
Jiang Li noticed how awkward Qin Zheng looked and frowned at Feng Bai. “Third Brother, he was just being polite—no need to be so harsh, okay?”
Feng Bai turned to Qin Zheng. “You really didn’t mean anything by it?”
Qin Zheng, expressionless, replied, “Of course not.”
Feng Bai gave a satisfied nod. “Good. I’m taking Xiao Jiang Li home now. I’d love to give you a ride too, but our car’s too small—kind of inconvenient.”
Qin Zheng smiled in response. “It’s fine. I’ll just take a cab.”
But the moment he saw Feng Bai lead Jiang Li and Tong Yi over to a long luxury van and open its door, the smile froze on his face.
He couldn’t even remember the last time he’d seen Feng Bai, let alone offended him.
So when exactly had Feng Bai developed such a huge problem with him?
He genuinely had no idea.
