Chapter 134 Part 2 – I Saw Your Third Brother’s Moments (II)

Content with Tong Yi’s promise and unaware of the scheme he was plotting, Feng Bai got back into the car.

As the car pulled away, Jiang Li looked at him with a smile, “So, Third Brother, have you guys finished discussing your ‘man stuff’?”

Feng Bai looked a little embarrassed. “I just talked to Tong Yi about some business matters. Nothing you’d be interested in.”

Jiang Li: “…”

Her Third Brother was really getting better at lying. But did he take her for a fool? Even if the Feng family were going to partner with Tong Yi, there’s no way they’d send someone like Feng Bai—an IT tech nerd—to handle negotiations. It would be completely pointless!

Seeing Jiang Li didn’t press the issue, Feng Bai breathed a sigh of relief and began asking about how things had been at uni. They chatted and laughed all the way back to the Feng family estate. When the car stopped outside the house and Jiang Li got out, she saw her grandfather chatting with the doorman. She quickly ran over and called out, “Grandpa!”

Old Master Feng’s eyes lit up the moment he saw her, but he quickly frowned. “You look like you’ve lost weight.”

Jiang Li hooked her arm through his and smiled. “That’s just your imagination. I weighed myself a few days ago—I’ve actually gained a few catties.”

Her grandfather wasn’t having it. “You’re wearing layers in the winter. That adds a few catties by itself. If I say you’ve lost weight, then you’ve lost weight.”

Jiang Li didn’t argue further. “Then I’ll make sure to eat well over the holidays and gain it back.”

Old Master Feng smiled warmly. “That’s more like it.”

It was already pretty late when Jiang Li got home, but because her grandfather knew her arrival time, he’d deliberately pushed back dinner. As everyone sat down to eat, Jiang Li thought about texting her third uncle to ask when he’d be coming home, but before she could act, Feng Qi appeared in the dining room.

Old Master Feng gave his youngest son a side-eye. “You ghost in and out all day and still manage to show up right at mealtime. Impressive.”

Feng Qi walked over and sat down beside Jiang Li, replying mildly, “Just finished some work at the research institute.”

Since his attitude was good, Old Master Feng didn’t say anything more.

Jiang Li turned to him. “Uncle, will you be going to the institute every day for a while?”

“That’s true. Perfect timing—you’ll come with me. We’ll jog there early in the morning. Good for both mind and body,” Feng Qi said. That way, that brat from the Qin family wouldn’t have a single opportunity.

Jiang Li nodded right away. “I don’t have any plans during the break, anyway. And I was planning to ask you a few questions, too.”

She agreed so quickly that it made Feng Qi pause. Had he really misunderstood the whole Qin Zheng situation? If there was something between them, surely they’d be trying to sneak off together—she definitely wouldn’t agree to spend every day at the research institute.

Jiang Li picked up a rib and placed it in his bowl. “Third Uncle, eat up.”

Old Master Feng frowned at Feng Qi. “Xiao Jiang Li finally comes home for a few days, and you want her to keep working like a dog? You’re no better than a heartless capitalist.”

Jiang Li picked up some food for her grandfather next, “I’ll rest at home on the weekends, Grandpa. And of course, we’ll all stay up together on New Year’s Eve.”

Hearing that, Old Master Feng didn’t object to her research institute plans anymore—though he doubted his opinion made any difference anyway.

After dinner, Jiang Li returned to her room. After washing up, she called Tong Yi, curious to know what exactly Feng Bai had secretly said to him earlier. As soon as the call connected, his chuckle rang out from the receiver, “Let me guess—your Third Brother wouldn’t tell you?”

Jiang Li responded immediately, “I just didn’t bother pressing him. If I had, he definitely would’ve cracked.”

Tong Yi chuckled. “Well, it wasn’t really a secret. Your Third Uncle suspects Qin Zheng has feelings for you—that’s why he sent your Third Brother to ‘investigate.'”

Jiang Li said helplessly, “Uncle says he trusts me, but he still sent Third Brother to investigate—that proves he’s been suspicious of me and Qin Zheng all along.”

Tong Yi asked curiously, “Why would he suspect you and Qin Zheng?”

Jiang Li hesitated for a few seconds before replying, “How would I know? I didn’t ask him.”

She couldn’t possibly tell Tong Yi that her uncle got the wrong idea because she’d said she wanted to date a longtime classmate she knew well—otherwise he’d instantly realize she was referring to him, and then his ego would definitely shoot through the roof!

Tong Yi squinted. “Why do I feel like your last two sentences contradict each other?”

“You don’t believe me?” Jiang Li snapped.

“Of course I believe you,” Tong Yi said quickly. “It’s just… well, whatever. Let Third Master Feng suspect what he wants. It’s not like it’s true anyway.”

“Exactly,” Jiang Li agreed. “And since I’ll be going to the institute with my uncle every day, he’ll soon realize I have nothing going on with Qin Zheng.”

“What? You’re going to the research institute every day?” Tong Yi’s elated mood instantly dipped. Over the past few months, he’d seen Jiang Xiao Li almost daily. Now that it was winter break, it should’ve been even easier to see her—but if she was at the institute every day, it’d be nearly impossible!

Jiang Li noticed the disappointment in his voice and asked, “Are you afraid to come find me just because my uncle’s there?”

“Would you want me to come find you?” Tong Yi asked. If she wanted him to come, then even if Feng Qi disapproved, he’d go anyway. What he was afraid of was ruining the bit of progress he’d made—if Feng Qi got involved too soon and Jiang Li’s feelings for him weren’t solid yet, it could all fall apart.

Jiang Li heard the tone in his voice and felt a little sorry for him. “You… you’d better not come for now. I’ll be busy the next few days.”

Feng Qi had indeed spoken highly of Tong Yi the other day, but only because he was under a misapprehension—he believed she had feelings for Qin Zheng. Compared to that, Tong Yi seemed like the lesser evil in his eyes.

Jiang Li understood her uncle’s overly protective mindset. Just like any doting father, he just thought no one was good enough for her. If Tong Yi started showing up at the institute too often, her uncle might assume they were dating… and then he’d become the new target of scrutiny.

Anyway, she hadn’t officially agreed to date Tong Yi yet, so there was no need to bring it up to her uncle. It would only complicate things.

The next morning, Jiang Li got up, ate breakfast, and jogged to the research institute with Feng Qi. It didn’t take long for him to notice her stamina had dropped. “You haven’t been working out at university?”

Jiang Li replied between breaths, “Our school doesn’t have morning exercises. I really haven’t trained in a while.”

“Then this break is the perfect time to catch up,” Feng Qi said, slowing his pace.

By the time they arrived at the institute, Jiang Li felt like her pores were all wide open. She grabbed a glass of water and sat down to rest before slowly easing into study mode.

For the next few days, Jiang Li followed Feng Qi on a strict early-riser schedule, spending most of her time at the institute.
