Chapter 134 Part 1 – I Saw Your Third Brother’s Moments (I)
After getting in the car, Jiang Li looked at Feng Bai with a puzzled expression. “Third Brother, did someone from the Qin family offend you before?”
The Feng Bai she knew had always been straightforward in his words and actions, but he was never the type who targeted someone for no reason. So if he’d just made those passive-aggressive remarks to Qin Zheng, there had to be a reason. But Qin Zheng had been studying in Beijing for the past few months—he shouldn’t have had any chance to offend Feng Bai. Jiang Li guessed someone else in the Qin family must’ve angered him, and he was taking it out on Qin Zheng.
Feng Bai avoided her gaze and denied it. “No one from the Qin family offended me. I just simply don’t like Qin Zheng.”
Jiang Li saw through his lie immediately and put on a pitiful expression. “It’s only been a few months since we last saw each other, and now you’re keeping secrets from me? If we were apart any longer, would you forget me altogether?”
Sitting in the front passenger seat, Tong Yi heard her speak in that tone and felt like his whole body turned to jelly. He couldn’t help but think: If Jiang Xiao Li used that voice with me, I’d never be able to refuse her anything!
Feng Bai wasn’t faring much better. A guilty look flickered across his eyes. After a long pause, he finally said, “It’s only been a few months, and now Xiao Jiang Li is already siding with outsiders to interrogate her Third Brother. I’m heartbroken.”
He said this while deliberately mimicking Jiang Li’s tone and expression—even his pitiful look was almost identical to hers.
When Feng Qi had asked him to pick up Jiang Li and observe her interactions with Qin Zheng, Feng Bai had thought it was no big deal. From his perspective, even if Qin Zheng had feelings for Jiang Li, as long as she didn’t reciprocate, all he had to do was throw in a few sarcastic comments and scare the guy off—problem solved.
He had used these same tricks against Tong Xu in the past, so applying them to Qin Zheng now was easy. But the fact that Xiao Jiang Li had just defended Qin Zheng… that’s certainly a bad sign!
Could it be that she actually did have feelings for Qin Zheng? Sure, the guy is better than most of his peers, but just the fact that he once dated Jiang Ruo is enough to disqualify him completely.
Faced with Jiang Li’s questioning, Feng Bai didn’t dare admit he was deliberately targeting Qin Zheng, and definitely couldn’t say it was Feng Qi’s instruction. So instead, he pulled out an even more pitiful expression, hoping to bluff his way through.
Of course, Jiang Li could tell he was acting, but decided to let it go. “I was just curious why you don’t like Qin Zheng. If you don’t want to say, that’s fine—I won’t force you.”
She was so easygoing about it that Feng Bai was momentarily thrown off. “You’re really not going to press me?”
Jiang Li nodded right away. “Of course not. I may consider Qin Zheng a friend, but you’re family—that’s an easy choice.”
Hearing that, Feng Bai finally relaxed. He instructed the driver to drop Tong Yi off first.
The Tong family home wasn’t far from the Fengs’, and it was on the way, so it wouldn’t take much time. When they arrived outside the Tong villa, Tong Yi thanked Feng Bai and Jiang Li before getting out with his suitcase.
But then Feng Bai turned to Jiang Li and said, “I’m going to have a quick word with Big Nephew. Wait for me in the car.”
Jiang Li asked curiously, “What are you going to talk to him about?”
Feng Bai smiled mysteriously. “Man talk. Not for you to hear.”
Jiang Li: “…”
‘Third Brother’s acting very weird today!’
Feng Bai was clearly hiding something, but since he didn’t want to tell her, Jiang Li decided not to press it. Anyway, no matter what he said to Tong Yi, Tong Yi would definitely tell her later.
“Go on, then. I’ll wait here,” she replied, very agreeably.
Seeing she wasn’t going to dig further, Feng Bai finally let out a breath of relief. He got out and quickly caught up to Tong Yi, placing a hand on his shoulder.
“Big Nephew, you’ve got problems,” he started, frowning.
Tong Yi froze. “I offended you too?”
Feng Bai understood that the word “too” was a jab—Tong Yi clearly thought he’d just unfairly targeted Qin Zheng!
Just thinking of Qin Zheng made Feng Bai frown again. “When I left Beijing, I asked you to keep an eye on Xiao Jiang Li—make sure no random man gets close to her. And what did you do?”
“…” Tong Yi froze once again, and a slight panic crept up. Did Feng Bai figure out his feelings for Jiang Xiao Li? But that couldn’t be—he’d hidden them so well. Even Feng Qi hadn’t noticed. Someone as dense and naively clueless as Feng Bai shouldn’t have picked up on it, right?
Feng Bai gave him a look full of disdain. “You and Qin Zheng are in the same uni—he’s been right under your nose. And yet you didn’t even notice his feelings for Xiao Jiang Li. Don’t you think that’s a problem?”
Tong Yi raised an eyebrow. “Qin Zheng?”
Feng Bai rolled his eyes. “Yes, Qin Zheng. Don’t tell me you still haven’t figured out how he feels about her.”
Tong Yi smiled, “I think you must be mistaken.”
Feng Bai gave a soft snort. “How could I be mistaken? I got the news straight from Third Uncle. It’s definitely accurate.”
Tong Yi: “…”
Why would Third Master Feng think Qin Zheng liked Jiang Xiao Li? That day, when he came to celebrate Jiang Xiao Li’s birthday, he had questioned both of them one by one. If he’d suspected Qin Zheng then, he definitely wouldn’t have returned to Minjiang so easily.
So it must have been after returning to Minjiang that he got the wrong idea. But as for how exactly he came to that conclusion… that’s still a complete mystery.
Feng Bai patted Tong Yi’s shoulder and solemnly instructed, “Once the new semester starts, make sure to keep an eye on Qin Zheng. Don’t let him make any moves on Xiao Jiang Li. I, for one, do not approve of him as a brother-in-law. Got it?”
Tong Yi nodded right away. “Don’t worry, I’ll definitely keep an eye on him. No chance he’s getting close to Jiang Xiao Li.”
He was sure Qin Zheng had no romantic interest in Jiang Xiao Li. If that was the case, he would’ve acted long before Feng Bai ever stepped in.
That said, this situation certainly served him well. With Qin Zheng acting as an unintentional decoy, Third Master Feng probably wouldn’t notice him—at least not for now.
Once he succeeded in winning Jiang Xiao Li over, even if Third Master Feng objected later, he likely wouldn’t make things too difficult—not when he adored Jiang Xiao Li so much and wouldn’t want to upset her.
