Chapter 137 – Don’t Take The Blame
Chapter 137 – Don’t Take The Blame
Feng Bai spoke extremely fast, like a machine gun, and faced with his interrogation, Jiang Ruo couldn’t say a single word in her defense.
Seeing Jiang Ruo rendered speechless, Feng Bai immediately knew she had a guilty conscience. With a mocking expression, he said, “Since you’ve come all the way to find me, why don’t you tell me exactly what you did that was so vile and immoral that you think Tong Yi would definitely come after you?”
Having known that guy for many years, Feng Bai believed he understood Tong Yi fairly well. If Jiang Ruo hadn’t done something truly disgusting, there’s no way he would target her. So either Jiang Ruo was mistaken, or she had provoked Tong Yi too severely. But either way, there was absolutely no chance he would help Jiang Ruo get out of her mess.
Feng Bai’s eyes seemed to see right through everything, making Jiang Ruo feel like she had nowhere to hide. The explanations she had prepared beforehand were now completely useless.
Jiang Ruo finally realized that coming to Feng Bai today was likely a wasted effort. But seeking him out had been the only solution she could think of.
After the man in the trench coat warned her, Jiang Ruo’s only thought was that she must never provoke Jiang Li again—she couldn’t even show her presence. From now on, anywhere Jiang Li might appear, she would deliberately avoid.
But she quickly discovered that even if she actively avoided Jiang Li, she still couldn’t escape the trouble.
After someone poured water on her bed, Jiang Ruo threatened her roommates. They were indeed intimidated and quieted down for a while. But before long, they resumed targeting her.
They kept testing Jiang Ruo’s limits, and once they realized she didn’t truly have the guts to go all out, they pushed further and further. Although she went to the counselor several times, it didn’t help much.
On the day of the final exam, they schemed to lock her in a bathroom stall, causing her to miss it entirely.
After being bullied so badly, Jiang Ruo really had considered dragging them down with her. But she was already someone who had died once. Every time she thought back to the despair of water entering her lungs, she just couldn’t summon the courage to die a second time.
What’s more, her brother and Bai Guolin had ended up in a detention center because of her. They both wanted her to live well—she couldn’t let them down.
The girls in the dorm bullied her so severely because Tong Yi had paid them to do so. As long as he stopped targeting her, they would naturally back off. But Jiang Ruo was self-aware; she knew she couldn’t persuade Tong Yi. If she approached Jiang Li, it would only bring her more humiliation.
After weighing all her options, she finally decided to seek out Feng Bai—because he was the simplest and most naïve one in the Feng family.
Unfortunately, Feng Bai wasn’t as gullible as she had imagined. He wasn’t even like Tong Xu, easily led around by the nose.
Realizing this, Jiang Ruo looked up at Feng Bai. “I… I shouldn’t have come to you. I just remembered the old days. Back then, even though you always said you disliked me, you still saved up money to buy me toys. I…”
Feng Bai interrupted her coldly, “All I remember is when Grandpa was bedridden, my brother and I came to see you several times—you either avoided us or turned us away with a cold face. And now you’re talking to me about childhood bonds?”
Jiang Ruo quickly explained, “It was because of Dad…”
Feng Bai cut her off again, “If you hadn’t brought up your precious dad, I’d have almost forgotten that you’re the result of Jiang Huai’s affair. You couldn’t choose your birth, so none of us in the Feng family ever gave you trouble for it. But as an illegitimate child, if you had even a shred of shame, you wouldn’t come here and disgust me like this.”
With that, Feng Bai took Zhong Yue’s hand and walked out of the theater without a moment’s hesitation.
Seeing Feng Bai frown, Zhong Yue chuckled and said, “Didn’t you just say Jiang Ruo has nothing to do with you? Then you shouldn’t let her affect your mood.”
Feng Bai pouted, “I never cared about her. Why would she affect my mood? I was just thinking—if Big Nephew really did something to target her, then it must be because she bullied Xiao Jiang Li. Otherwise, that guy wouldn’t have bothered with her.”
Zhong Yue thought for a moment and said, “That’s easy—just ask your little sister.”
Feng Bai nodded. “Yeah, I should ask. If Jiang Ruo really bullied Xiao Jiang Li, there’s no way I’ll let her get away with it.”
Feng Bai had always been impulsive. After saying that, he immediately took out his phone and dialed Jiang Li’s number.
Jiang Li had just finished chatting with her second aunt for a long while. After the aunt left, she took out her phone and changed Feng Bai’s contact name from “Third Brother” to “Broadcast Station Manager.”
She had just finished updating the name when “Broadcast Station Manager” called. Jiang Li paused for a moment before answering the call with a smile.
After the call connected, Feng Bai repeated Jiang Ruo’s earlier words verbatim, then asked, “Be honest with your third brother—did that Jiang Ruo ever bully you?”
Jiang Li immediately denied it. “She never bullied me. Since starting college, I’ve seen Jiang Ruo only once. She came to ask me to convince Grandpa to save Jiang Zhou. I refused, and after that, she never bothered me again.”
Feng Bai was puzzled. “Then why is Tong Yi targeting her?”
Jiang Li smiled and said, “Mr. Tong might not be Tong Yi. Didn’t you just argue with her that it could’ve been Tong Xu or Tong Bingran?”
Feng Bai replied helplessly, “That was just something I said to refute her. Tong Xu and Tong Bingran have nothing to do with her. Why would they target her?”
But Jiang Li thought that Tong Xu might have had a reason to go after Jiang Ruo. As for Tong Yi—if he really had arranged for someone to mess with Jiang Ruo, there’s no way he wouldn’t have told her.
“I’ll ask Tong Yi and find out,” she said. After hanging up, she immediately called Tong Yi and explained the situation.
Tong Yi immediately denied it. “Yeah, I really don’t like Jiang Ruo, but I haven’t arranged for anyone to deal with her. If I had done that, there’s no way I’d have kept it from you.”
If he had known earlier that Jiang Ruo would try to manipulate him and Jiang Xiao Li, he would’ve found a way to warn her—but he wouldn’t have gone too far. After all, Jiang Ruo was terminally ill, and if he pushed her too hard, who knew what desperate thing she might do?
Jiang Li frowned. “If Jiang Ruo isn’t lying, then was it Tong Xu who targeted her?”
Tong Yi was stunned for a moment. “What reason would Tong Xu have to go after Jiang Ruo? Unless… unless when he suddenly started investigating that kidney-stealing case, it was because Jiang Ruo pushed him into it.”
Jiang Li was surprised. “How did you know that?”
Before Tong Xu began investigating the case, Jiang Ruo had indeed approached him. Jiang Li had learned about this from Feng Qi and knew that Jiang Ruo’s goal was to save Jiang Zhou. But she was certain she had never told Tong Yi about it.
Tong Yi chuckled. “What’s so hard to guess? Tong Xu suddenly showing up to investigate me must’ve had a reason. Jiang Ruo was trying everything she could to save Jiang Zhou back then. It’s quite likely she ran to Tong Xu and instigated him to make trouble.”
Jiang Ruo had wanted Old Master Feng to be disappointed in Jiang Li, believing that was the only way he might help Jiang Zhou. Tong Xu had wanted the old master to hate Tong Yi and oppose Jiang Li’s relationship with Tong Yi, so that he might have a chance.
The two had their own agendas and naturally hit it off. However, Third Master Feng had detected their intentions early and proceeded with his own arrangements, completely distancing Jiang Li and Tong Yi from the situation.
Both Jiang Ruo and Tong Xu had plotted so meticulously, but even without Third Master Feng’s intervention, they still wouldn’t have gotten what they wanted.
Even if Old Master Feng learned the truth and became disappointed with Jiang Li, he still wouldn’t have saved Jiang Zhou—it simply wasn’t in his nature.
And Tong Xu was even more delusional. Even if Old Master Feng opposed Jiang Li and Tong Yi’s relationship, he would never force her to accept Tong Xu instead.
Furthermore, due to Third Master Feng’s interference, Tong Xu’s plans failed ahead of schedule. After that, the Third Master began suppressing his business, causing him considerable losses.
Since Tong Bingran didn’t want a direct confrontation with the Feng family, he brought Tong Xu along to apologize and suspended all of Tong Xu’s company responsibilities. Tong Xu’s resentment couldn’t be directed toward the Fengs, so he poured all his hatred on the instigator, Jiang Ruo. His retaliating against her was the logical next step.
Jiang Ruo had once schemed against Tong Yi, so the moment she heard the words “Mr. Tong,” she instinctively assumed it was Tong Yi coming after her.
After figuring it out, Tong Yi couldn’t help but gloat. “Well, well, talk about dog eat dog. We can just sit back and enjoy the show; no need to get involved.”
But Jiang Li disagreed, “Still, I don’t want Jiang Ruo to misunderstand and think you’re the one who sent people to bully her.”
If it were a normal misunderstanding, that’d be one thing, but Tong Xu clearly intended to torment Jiang Ruo to the extreme. If she were pushed too hard, no one knew how she would snap.
A terminally ill person like her didn’t have many good days left. If she really mistook Tong Yi for the culprit and began to hate him, she might eventually go down with him in a blaze. That wasn’t the risk Jiang Li wanted to assume.
After ending the call, Jiang Li immediately contacted Tong Youyou and asked for Tong Xu’s number. Then she called him.
Seeing an unfamiliar local number, Tong Xu answered the call right away. When he heard Jiang Li’s voice, he even thought he was dreaming. He pressed a hand to his pounding heart and asked cautiously, “Did you… did you need something from me?”
Jiang Li pressed the record button and went straight to the point, “Why did you hire people to bully Jiang Ruo?”
Tong Xu froze, then explained, “She tried to scheme against you before, I just wanted to…”
Jiang Li cut him off. “Wasn’t it because your plan failed, my uncle gave you trouble, and you were so embarrassed and angry that you took it out on her?”
Tong Xu was silent for a few seconds before trying to explain, “At first, I really didn’t know she was trying to use me. If I had known…”
Before he could finish, Jiang Li hung up and blocked him. The only reason she’d called was to confirm that he was behind the attacks on Jiang Ruo. Now that she had her evidence, her next step was to go find Jiang Ruo.
