Chapter 136 – Blabbermouth Third Brother
Chapter 136 – Blabbermouth Third Brother
Zhong Yue had long known her boyfriend was a sweet, naïve goofball, but that was exactly what she liked most about Feng Bai. Guys like him—good-looking and pure-hearted—were hard to find. It was no surprise that girls would be drawn to him.
But Zhong Yue still didn’t know why Feng Bai had decided to pursue her in the first place. Thinking of this, she couldn’t help but ask, “Why did you chase after me back then?”
Feng Bai was momentarily stunned, then replied honestly, “Because I liked you, of course.”
After getting into the passenger seat and buckling her seatbelt, Zhong Yue continued, “But why did you like me? There were so many pretty girls at school—why not go after them?”
Feng Bai turned to her and said, “You’re pretty, your smile is especially sweet, you have a great personality… even when you’re angry, you’re still adorable.”
Zhong Yue: “…”
If it weren’t for the sincerity in his eyes, she’d have thought he was teasing her.
Feng Bai reached out to pinch her earlobe. “To me, you’re the most perfect girl. Don’t ever doubt that.”
Zhong Yue’s cheeks flushed slightly, but she still teased him, “Even more perfect than your sister?”
Feng Bai blinked, then smiled. “Xiao Jiang Li’s my little sister. You’re my wife. You’re both perfect in different ways.”
Zhong Yue: “…”
He might be silly sometimes, but he was an irresistibly sweet one. She couldn’t possibly resist.
…
Jiang Li and Tong Yi strolled around the mall together, but they didn’t end up buying much. Besides the bracelet, Tong Yi also got her a giant stuffed toy.
After leaving the mall, Jiang Li noticed that her Big Nephew, holding the plush toy, was turning quite a few heads. If she weren’t walking beside him, he’d probably have girls asking for his number.
They put the plushie in the back seat of the car, and Tong Yi was about to drive her home when Jiang Li said, “You forgot to buy a gift for Youyou.”
Tong Yi replied with a smile, “That was just an excuse. She didn’t actually bug me for anything.”
Jiang Li raised an eyebrow. “Still, I think you should get her something.”
“Then let’s go back and pick something for her,” Tong Yi said at once. He loved any excuse to spend more time with Jiang Xiao Li.
Jiang Li shook her head. “No need to go back to the mall. Youyou’s been really into Hanfu lately. If you really want to give her something she’ll like, go with that.”
Youyou had added Jiang Li on QQ, and they occasionally chatted. Jiang Li had seen her posting about Hanfu in her moments lately, so she was confident that it was the right gift.
Tong Yi chuckled. “That kid changes hobbies faster than the weather. If I want to give her Hanfu, I’d better act fast. Otherwise, she’ll be into something else soon.”
Jiang Li nodded. “She’s your sister. Up to you.”
Tong Yi nodded, drove her back to the Feng family home, and waited until she entered the gate before driving off.
The gatekeeper saw her carrying the huge plushie and immediately offered to help. Jiang Li politely declined with a smile. “It only looks big, it’s actually really light. I can manage.”
Lately, she’d been running to the research institute with Feng Qi every day. They even sparred during their free time, so her physical strength had definitely improved.
During those sparring sessions, Jiang Li learned the hard way what “three days without practice and your skills go rusty” really meant. Just a few months without training, and she could barely put up a fight against Feng Qi. She’d decided: once the new semester started, she’d regularly challenge Tong Yi to fights. By summer break, she’d surprise her uncle with her progress!
After entering the house, she carried her plush toy toward the north wing loft but ran into her second aunt on the way.
Her second aunt’s eyes lit up at the sight of the toy. “Who gave you that plushie?”
Jiang Li raised an eyebrow. “Second Aunt, how do you know it was a gift?”
Her second aunt smiled knowingly. “You’d never buy something so childish for yourself. I’m guessing it was from a boy, right?”
Jiang Li: “…”
Indeed, it was from Tong Yi. When she casually mentioned that the plushie looked hilariously cute and kind of reminded her of him, Tong Yi immediately insisted on buying it for her, saying that now, every time she looked at it, she’d be reminded of the person she should be reminded of.
She’d wanted to refuse, but he was persistent, and the sales assistant chimed in too, so she gave in.
In fact, the plushie didn’t look anything like Tong Yi—he wasn’t nearly that goofy-looking. She had just said it in passing, but he took it seriously.
Seeing that Jiang Li didn’t refute her guess, Second Aunt’s eyes sparkled even more. “Xiao Jiang Li, are you dating someone?”
Jiang Li quickly shook her head. “No, no, not at all. Don’t go guessing, Second Aunt. There’s nothing like that going on.”
Second Aunt grinned mischievously. “You sound pretty flustered.”
Jiang Li: “…”
She wasn’t exactly flustered. She was just worried that Second Aunt might run to tell Third Uncle. If that happened, this year’s New Year celebrations might get… very lively.
Second Aunt hooked her arm through Jiang Li’s and whispered, “Be honest with me, I promise I won’t tell your third uncle or your grandpa.”
Jiang Li sighed, “If you tell Third Brother, it’s basically the same as telling the whole family.”
“How could I possibly tell him?” Second Aunt scoffed. “That kid’s a total airhead—I’ve never confided in him about anything.”
She followed Jiang Li all the way to the north loft and even into her room. “Come on, just tell your aunt. I swear I won’t breathe a word. If I lie, may your Third Brother gain thirty kilos.”
Jiang Li: “…”
Third Brother… poor guy.
Seeing that Second Aunt was clearly set on getting to the bottom of things, Jiang Li relented. “I’m not dating, really. The plushie… it was a gift from a guy who’s pursuing me.”
“Not just any pursuer, right? Let me guess—is it Qin Zheng?”
Jiang Li said helplessly, “Qin Zheng and I are just regular friends. Why does everyone keep thinking there’s something between us?”
Second Aunt explained, “Your Third Brother told me, and he said your Third Uncle thinks so too.”
Jiang Li: “…”
Of course! Third Brother and his blabbermouth! For a moment, Jiang Li was seriously considering changing his contact name to “Broadcast Station Manager.”
She pulled Second Aunt to sit with her on the couch, hesitated a moment, and finally said, “It’s not Qin Zheng. It’s… Tong Yi. But I haven’t said yes to him yet.”
Second Aunt looked surprised for a moment, then nodded knowingly. “Tong Yi is definitely good-looking, and that kid’s got a great personality too. More importantly, he’s hardworking. If it were between him and Qin Zheng, I’d definitely support you choosing Tong Yi.”
Jiang Li smiled. “Qin Zheng doesn’t even like me, and I don’t have any feelings for him either, so can we drop him already?”
Second Aunt immediately caught the key point. “So you do have feelings for Tong Yi?”
Jiang Li pursed her lips. “He’s… he’s just a pursuer right now.”
“But the only one you actually acknowledge, right?” Second Aunt teased. She knew Jiang Li had plenty of admirers—like Tong Bingran’s son, Tong Xu, who recently made a public confession. But Jiang Li hadn’t even spared him a glance.
Yet when it came to Tong Yi, Jiang Li didn’t show the slightest irritation. She even accepted his gifts. That said enough.
Jiang Li grabbed Second Aunt’s arm and leaned on her shoulder, playing coquettishly. “Anyway, you can’t tell anyone, okay? You promised.”
Second Aunt nodded. “Of course I won’t. Your third uncle’s temper—if he finds out Tong Yi’s run off with his precious niece, he’ll probably have a meltdown.”
Jiang Li immediately added, “Don’t tell Uncle. Don’t tell Grandpa either. I haven’t even agreed to be with Tong Yi yet—there’s no reason to say anything.”
Second Aunt offered a suggestion, “If you really do plan to accept him, you might want to talk to your grandpa first. He seems to like Tong Yi—he might help you win your uncle over.”
Jiang Li said softly, “But I promised Third Uncle before that if I started dating someone, I’d tell him first.”
Second Aunt gave her a sympathetic look. “Well, then all I can say is—good luck.”
Jiang Li: “…”
…
Feng Bai and Zhong Yue had just left the movie theater and were planning to stroll around a bit when they saw Jiang Ruo standing at the theater entrance. Feng Bai instantly felt annoyed. Holding his girlfriend’s hand, he was about to steer her away when Jiang Ruo suddenly walked up and stood in front of him.
“Third cousin, I…”
Feng Bai frowned reflexively. “Don’t call me that. I have nothing to do with you. Ever heard the phrase ‘a good dog doesn’t block the way’?”
Zhong Yue rarely saw Feng Bai get angry—especially not at girls. In her memory, he’d never raised his voice. She glanced at the vaguely familiar girl and only realized who she was after a few seconds, deciding to keep quiet.
“I didn’t want to bother you,” Jiang Ruo said pitifully. Feng Bai was the most straightforward member of the Feng family—if even he refused to help, she truly had no options left. “But I really didn’t know what else to do.”
Feng Bai sneered, “Your not bothering me won’t help. Just seeing you disgusts me. I’d never help you in this life.”
“I… I really have nowhere else to turn. Tong Yi bribed the girls in my dorm to lock me in the bathroom on the day of our final exams so I’d miss them. And when I got back to Minjiang, he—”
Feng Bai cut her off. “You really think Tong Yi would go after you out of nowhere?”
Jiang Ruo bit her lip and whispered, “I heard one of my roommates on the phone. She called the person ‘Mr. Tong,’ and I—”
Feng Bai gave her a look of utter impatience. “Who says ‘Mr. Tong’ has to be Tong Yi? Couldn’t it be Tong Xu or Tong Bingran?”
Before she could answer, he added coldly, “You’re so sure it was Tong Yi, the only explanation is you must’ve done something disgusting that pissed him off. So now you’re just feeling guilty and assuming he’s out to get you.”
Jiang Ruo: “…”
