Seeing Jiang Li zoning out, Tong Yi quickly took her hand. “If your uncle isn’t satisfied with me, then I’ll do everything I can to earn his approval.”
Jiang Li snapped back to her senses and nodded. “Alright, let’s work hard together.”
The moment he heard that, Tong Yi felt like he’d just been handed the whole world.
He hugged Jiang Li tightly. There was so much he wanted to say, yet in the end, he only murmured softly, “Jiang Xiao Li, I’ll treat you well for the rest of my life.”
Jiang Li poked his back with her finger. “But you’re hugging me too tightly. I can barely breathe right now.”
He immediately let her go and said a little awkwardly, “Then… should I teach you how to swim now?”
Jiang Li nodded, then added with a proud tone, “If you turn out to be an unqualified coach, I’ll fire you.”
Tong Yi looked at her with a smile. “So you’re planning to fire me and then train yourself to become a swimming prodigy?”
Jiang Li blinked mischievously. “I could always hire another coach. I’ll find a really handsome guy…”
She hadn’t even finished her sentence when Tong Yi suddenly leaned down and once again sealed her lips with a kiss.
About a minute later, Tong Yi finally let her go, his voice teasing and low, “Just dealing with this handsome guy is already more than enough. And you still want another?”
Jiang Li reached up to touch her lips. It took her a while to recover before she mumbled quietly, “Why does it feel like you’ve suddenly gotten jealous?”
Tong Yi met her gaze with a soft smile. “I didn’t have the right before, but now that we’re officially a couple, of course I can be openly jealous.”
Jiang Li thought that this new, openly-jealous version of Tong Yi was actually kind of cute. She poked him in the arm.”You better teach me how to swim first, Coach Tong.”
The moment she called him “Coach Tong,” Tong Yi immediately leaned closer and said in a low voice, “You’re calling me Coach so naturally… could it be you want me to drive a little too?”
Jiang Li: “…”
So this is the difference between being a pursuer and an official boyfriend?
Ever since they confirmed their relationship, Tong Yi’s flirt level had exploded—it was like he’d unlocked some unstoppable new mode.
As she dazed again, Tong Yi gently adjusted her swim cap, then went to the storage bin by the pool to fetch her a pair of goggles. He carefully helped her put them on, then gave her cheek a light squeeze.
“Coach Tong’s class is about to start. Student Jiang, please study hard.”
Jiang Li fired back immediately, “More like it’s time to see whether your teaching skills are up to par. Don’t just talk the talk.”
Tong Yi flicked her forehead lightly, then started demonstrating seriously. He went over a list of precautions and followed it up with several demonstrations.
After he finished explaining, Jiang Li asked, “Did you get all that from some online swimming tutorial?”
Tong Yi looked surprised. “Is Student Jiang doubting Coach Tong’s abilities?”
Jiang Li rolled her eyes. “What kind of coach are you anyway?”
Tong Yi grinned at her. “Don’t you think this feels kind of like role-play?”
Jiang Li looked puzzled. “You’re into acting now?”
Tong Yi leaned in close to her ear and whispered a few words. Jiang Li’s face turned bright red in an instant.
After a long while, she tried to play it cool. “Even if it’s role-play, I should be the one in charge. You should be calling me Teacher Jiang.”
Tong Yi looked thoughtful for a moment, then smiled and asked, “How about… I call you Aunt?”
Jiang Li: “…”
Why did he look so punchable when he smirked like that?
Forget it. She’d deal with him later. After all, she still hadn’t learned how to swim. If she started a fight in the water, she’d definitely be at a disadvantage—and Tong Yi would probably find it all very amusing.
Jiang Li decided to let it go for now. Following Tong Yi’s earlier demonstration, she began seriously trying to learn how to swim.
At first, she had a hard time keeping her balance and even swallowed a couple of mouthfuls of water. But as she gradually got the hang of it, she managed to swim a short distance.
Still, she wasn’t nearly as smooth as Tong Yi, and she couldn’t keep it up for long.
The two chatted a lot during the lesson. Time passed quickly, and by the time Tong Yi told her it was time to stop, Jiang Li didn’t feel tired at all and was still feeling reluctant.
Tong Yi saw right through her and smiled. “Let’s come back next weekend. Coach Tong will continue your private lessons then.”
Jiang Li frowned. “I think I can keep going a bit longer.”
Tong Yi explained, “When you’re first learning to swim, it’s best to keep each session under an hour. But we’ve already been in the pool for over two hours—your skin will start to wrinkle.”
Jiang Li glanced at her fingers and saw that they were indeed wrinkled. She held out her hand to him. “You really aren’t a qualified coach. Can’t even finish on time.”
Tong Yi pulled her into his arms and swam with her to the pool steps. Then, in one smooth motion, he lifted her into a princess carry and began walking up the steps with her in his arms.
Worried he might drop her into the water, Jiang Li didn’t struggle. Instead, she smiled and asked, “Coach Tong, do you always treat your female students like this?”
Tong Yi looked down at the girl in his arms, his eyes soft with amusement. “You’re the only student I have, of course I have to be extra responsible.”
After they got out of the pool, Tong Yi gently set her down. He took off her goggles, then grabbed a towel from the storage basket and wrapped it around her.
“Hurry and get changed out of that wet swimsuit. Dry your hair, too. After lunch, we can go catch a movie.”
Jiang Li looked at him with a smile. “You sure know how to plan things. But what if I don’t want to see a movie and just want to go back to school and study?”
Tong Yi put on a sorrowful face. “Are you really going to abandon me on the very first day of our relationship?”
Jiang Li: “…”
She knew he was faking it, but somehow, it still made her pause. Maybe on the first day of dating, couples really should be a little clingy with each other?
Seeing her dazed expression, Tong Yi couldn’t help but reach out and poke her cheek. “Jiang Xiao Li, when you make that face, it makes me really want to bully you. You know that?”
Jiang Li glared at him and was about to stomp on his foot, but the moment she looked down, she suddenly froze.
Tong Yi followed her gaze and immediately looked a little awkward. He quickly reached out to cover her eyes. “That’s just a normal reaction. Stop staring—it’ll go away in a bit.”
Jiang Li: “…”
Even if she knew it was normal… she still blushed. After all… she had no experience.
She smacked his hand away and muttered, “I’m going to change.”
Watching her flee, Tong Yi looked down at himself and let out a helpless sigh.
He had tried his best to keep it under control, but when he carried Jiang Xiao Li out of the pool just now, she had nestled so sweetly in his arms… then had the nerve to ask if he treated all his female students like that.
He noticed her swimsuit had bunched up slightly, exposing a pale stretch of skin at her waist… and his thoughts started to wander.
Would Jiang Xiao Li mistakenly think all he ever had on his mind was that?
They’d only just made their relationship official, and he was already…
Tong Yi quietly warned himself not to rush. If he scared her off, he wouldn’t even have a shoulder to cry on.
He stood for a moment on the anti-slip mat by the pool, then picked up the storage basket and headed toward the men’s changing room.
After showering and changing, Jiang Li dried her hair before slowly heading to the lobby to meet up with Tong Yi.
He was already dressed and lounging lazily on a sofa, playing with his phone. The moment he noticed her in his peripheral vision, he quickly put his phone away, stood up, and walked over to her.
He took her small backpack and slung it over his left shoulder, then wrapped his right arm naturally around her shoulders.
Jiang Li glanced up at him. Seeing how he acted like the earlier awkward moment had never happened, she instinctively pressed her lips together and told herself to forget about it too.
As they walked out together, Jiang Li suddenly realized—it had been a long time since Tong Yi had held her like this. It was just like the old days, and somehow, she found that comforting.
After they left the swimming pool, Tong Yi looked down at her and asked softly, “What do you want to eat? Coach Tong will treat you.”
Jiang Li pinched the skin at his waist. “If you call yourself ‘Coach Tong’ one more time, I swear I’ll give you a demonstration of public assault.”
Tong Yi immediately laughed. “Okay, no more ‘Coach Tong.’ How about this: your nephew takes his aunt out for some good food—is that better?”
Jiang Li looked at him with a grin. “A nephew who knows when to admit his mistakes is barely acceptable.”
“So what does Aunt want to eat?” He asked.
Jiang Li thought for a moment and replied, “Let’s go eat at a street food stall. It’s been ages since I’ve had that.”
Tong Yi nodded right away. “Whatever you say goes.”
A few seconds later, he asked, “Do you remember your 18th birthday? I flew back to celebrate with you, and we ate street food that night too.”
Jiang Li smiled faintly. “Of course I remember. I also remember the eleven roses and eleven lipsticks. I bet you haven’t forgotten either?”
Tong Yi grinned. “How could I forget? But you were so busy playing hero that night, you left the roses on the barbecue stall and never took them with you.”
Jiang Li said matter-of-factly, “We’d just injured those two thugs and had to go to the police station to give a statement. Forgetting the roses in that situation is perfectly reasonable, don’t you think?”
Tong Yi gave her a meaningful chuckle. “But you did remember to take the leftover barbecue with you.”
Jiang Li: “…”
Back then, she had only seen Tong Yi as her best friend. As for the roses he gave her, she’d thought he bought them out of pity—seeing that the flower seller was just a young girl, he probably wanted to help her business and happened to hand the flowers to her.
Later, when those two disgusting thugs appeared, she’d just set the roses aside. And when they went to the police station afterward, all she remembered to bring was the packed barbecue.
Jiang Li looked up at Tong Yi. “That time you gave me eleven lipsticks, was it just a random gift, or did it mean something?”
Tong Yi leaned in close to her ear and whispered, “Of course it meant ‘one heart, one soul’ and ‘forever.’ I’ve had wicked thoughts about you for a long time.”
Jiang Li gave him a light punch. “You still dare say that in front of my uncle?”
Tong Yi shook his head instantly. “Definitely not.”
If Third Master Feng ever found out that he’d set his sights on Jiang Xiao Li that early, there was no doubt he’d get beaten to a pulp.
“Jiang Xiao Li, let’s hurry up and get food. If your uncle kills me, I’ll at least die full instead of starving.”
Jiang Li laughed. “Fine, Aunt will take you out for barbecue, so you can die from overeating instead.”
