Chapter 840: A Case to Close
Chapter 840: A Case to Close
The room had fallen into silence.
The silver light of the moon passed through the tall church window and settled on the stone floor of the room; a calm light that stood in complete contrast to the chaos that had formed across the world over the past few weeks.
Daniel sat on the chair by the window, the communication talisman glowing in his hand. A few moments later, a familiar, angry voice came from it.
“I’ve been trying to contact you for two months!”
“I was busy clearing the tower.” Daniel didn’t even blink. When you’re inside the tower, communication devices don’t work with the outside world and practically shut down.
But he was too lazy to explain all of this. If the other party couldn’t figure it out themselves, then they were an idiot, and there was no need to explain to such a person.
A few seconds of silence passed, so long that even Serys seemed unsure she had heard correctly.
“The tower? Which floor?”
“A few floors higher than before.” Daniel shrugged.
Silence, then the sound of Serys grinding her teeth could be heard from the other end of the connection.
“Do you know how much I hate you?”
“No.”
“I don’t know either, but a lot.”
A faint smile settled on Daniel’s face. At least that girl was still the same Serys as before. That same girl who sometimes spoke to him with absolute politeness and respect as if he were a god.
And other times, suddenly acted as if they had been friends for decades.
“Anyway.” Daniel shifted slightly.
“What about you? It’s been a long time since we talked. How’s the Central Magic Tower?”
This time, a different silence followed. A heavy, tired, and hopeless silence. When Serys spoke again, the anger in her voice had diminished.
“Bad.” Just one word, but that one word was enough to explain the situation.
Daniel said nothing, letting her continue. He could somewhat guess that the situation was even worse than before, but at least he had a bit of hope that this girl was doing something.
But it seemed he had hoped for too much.
“Lioran has almost everyone on his side now. Ninety-five percent of the tower council supports him. Most of the grand masters have officially declared their support. The students are already calling him the next heir.”
“Some even say the succession ceremony is just a formality, as if the outcome has already been decided.”
“When is the ceremony?” Daniel’s eyes narrowed slightly.
“In about two weeks.”
A few seconds of silence passed.
“You’re a bit late, aren’t you?” Then Daniel said in a completely normal tone.
The explosion happened immediately.
“Late?!”
“Late?!”
“I’ve been looking for you for two months!”
“Two months!”
“I tried to contact you almost every day!”
“You were gone!”
“I thought you were dead! I had to contact Lana!”
“If I were dead, I wouldn’t have answered.” Daniel thought for a moment.
“I’m coming over there right now to strangle you.”
“So you’re doing well.” Daniel chuckled.
Serys said nothing for a few seconds, then sighed. A sigh that seemed to have months of exhaustion built up inside it.
“Couldn’t you find anything against him during this time? Anything that shows those suicides were actually murders committed by Lioran?”
“I found no evidence. Nothing. It’s as if all the traces have been erased. Anyone who might have known anything has either gone silent or disappeared.”
Her voice grew quieter.
“I’ve become even more isolated than before. Some of my old friends no longer answer me. Masters who used to support me have fallen silent.”
“Some people change their path when they see me, just because they don’t want Lioran to be upset with them.”
Daniel said nothing, but he could see the anger behind it, understood the frustration.
This wasn’t anger. This was despair. For the first time, Serys truly believed she had lost.
“They’re all a bunch of cowards, a bunch of spineless cowards. None of them dare to side with someone who might lose.” Serys said in despair.
Even she herself no longer had confidence in herself. So how could others trust her?
Daniel leaned his head back against the chair.
“Calm down. It’s not like the world has ended.”
“For you, maybe. For me, it has.” Serys let out a sound like a bitter laugh.
“There’s only two weeks left. Honestly…” For the first time, she hesitated.
“I’ve lost hope.”
A brief silence followed.
“I don’t think even you can do anything.”
The moonlight fell on Daniel’s face. His expression was calm, too calm. That same calmness that appeared before a storm.
“I won’t let Lioran become the next leader of the tower.”
That was it.
No explanation, no plan, no reasoning. Just one sentence. But suddenly, the other end of the connection fell silent.
Completely silent. Because Serys knew that tone. She had only spent a short time with Daniel, but she knew that tone well.
And every time Daniel spoke with such certainty… the impossible became possible.
“You’re still the same crazy person you used to be.” A few seconds later, she said quietly.
“Probably.”
Then Daniel suddenly changed the subject.
“Anyway, does that badge still work? Or have you become useless even to that extent?” He meant the badge she had given him during their last meeting, saying he would need it to enter the Central Magic Tower.
“What?!”
The anger immediately returned.
“Are you insulting me?”
“No.”
“You are.”
“Maybe.”
“Daniel!”
For the first time since the conversation began, Serys’s voice sounded like it used to. Not the voice of a loser, not the voice of someone hopeless, but the voice of the stubborn Serys who was after revenge.
Daniel smiled.
“So it still works?”
“Of course it works! That badge is mine! Not just anyone is allowed to have something like that!”
“Good. I’ll be there tomorrow.”
“Huh?”
“Come pick me up.”
“Wait… what?”
“See you tomorrow.”
“Daniel, I mean—”
But the connection was cut off. The talisman’s light went out, and the room fell into silence again.
Only the moonlight remained. Daniel quietly rose from his seat and walked to the window. The holy city shone under the night sky.
Thousands of lights, thousands of believers, thousands of lives. But his mind was elsewhere.
The Central Magic Tower, the Lionheart family. Two different problems, two separate crises, but the root of both was the same.
Andreas was practically the heir now, but it wasn’t official yet because there was still one problem in his way.
And that problem was none other than Lioran.
And Lioran was also the problem in the Central Magic Tower.
When this Lioran was removed from the picture, control of these two world powers would fall into the hands of his very close friends.
A cool breeze entered the room through the window. Daniel’s golden eyes glowed quietly in the darkness.
“It’s time to close this case too.”
His voice was quiet, but if anyone knew him, they would understand the true meaning of that sentence.
Tomorrow was not just a simple trip to the Central Magic Tower. Tomorrow was the beginning of the end of the game Lioran had spent years building.
And from the moment Daniel set foot in the tower… the balance of power would begin to collapse.
