Chapter 1775: Chapter 1776: Photo Confirmation
Cheng Su stayed at the shop for almost ten days. Once she saw that everyone had gotten the hang of things, and although business wasn’t exactly booming there were still transactions every day, she freed up her hands and left the shop in Qi Jianguo and the others’ care, while she got in touch with Qi Taiguo, planning to go visit.
As for Qi Taiguo, he missed his wife and son so badly it was unbearable. Considering that Qi Xiaoqi was too young and that taking a boat off the island and such would be inconvenient, he negotiated two days of leave from the army. They agreed to meet in Zhu City on Qi Xiaoqi’s lunar birthday, the seventh day of the seventh month, with him coming off the island to see them.
With two days still to go before the agreed leave and meeting date, Cheng Su went to the orphanage, bringing along that photo of the man called Mi Shaoan that Cheng Yaozu had given her. She wanted to ask the director to confirm whether this was the person who had come to the orphanage and seen her when she was little.
She had wanted to seek out the director for a long time, but she’d been busy with the shop, and she was also afraid that once it was confirmed, her mood would be affected, so she’d been holding back until now.
Come to think of it, this was a kind of ostrich mentality of her own, wasn’t it? Because she was afraid, she curled up!
The orphanage was the same as ever. Cheng Su had also donated money to it in the last few days, and now a lot of new play facilities for the children had been added. She counted as a regular visitor by now; some of the kids were very happy when they saw her and crowded around her singing and dancing.
She wasn’t there to adopt, but she often came to visit, and for the children that was a sort of comfort too. Who doesn’t like being thought of?
After playing with the children for a while, Cheng Su finally found the director and solemnly took the photo out of her bag, handing it over.
“Director, was the one who came looking for Little Cheng Su him?” Cheng Su’s voice sounded like it had been tightened with screws, a bit strained.
Her hand was on her thigh, clenching into a fist, and she stared at the director without so much as a blink.
The director picked up her glasses from the desk and put them on, then held the photo a little farther away. After looking for a few minutes, she nodded. “Yes, that’s him. You actually managed to find him?”
Cheng Su’s heart plummeted from a great height, the back she’d been holding so straight suddenly collapsing. She couldn’t even tell what she was feeling.
“Are you sure? Really?” Cheng Su pressed, unwilling to give up.
“No mistake. He’s even got a little mole on his ear here—see? That’s him.” The director pointed to the man’s right ear and spoke with certainty.
For a moment, Cheng Su’s mind went blank; she couldn’t clearly hear what the director was saying.
In a daze, she walked to Little Cheng Su’s room. The child was already over three years old, and when she saw her she stretched her arms out.
Cheng Su picked her up into her arms, and tears fell without any warning, dropping onto the child.
Little Cheng Su saw that she was crying, and her own mouth puckered as well; she reached out her small hand to wipe Cheng Su’s tears.
Cheng Su’s tears flowed even harder. She closed her eyes.
It really was this man, this killer. Who was he, really? Kin, or an enemy?
Whichever it was, she didn’t dare believe it. And in her past life, in her memories, had someone like this ever appeared?
Cheng Su stared blankly as Little Cheng Su played with building blocks, her mind like a computer booting up, constantly trying to search for any image of this Mi Shaoan.
But there was nothing. She racked her brains and still couldn’t find any trace of this man’s appearance or existence. She could also be sure that after she grew old enough to understand things, she had never seen anyone like him.
Then what did his appearance mean? Or what sort of message did it carry?
“Who is he?” Cheng Su murmured to Little Cheng Su, who was playing.
Little Cheng Su looked at her, blinking her eyes, but didn’t respond.
Cheng Su let out a long sigh and buried her head deep between her knees.
