Chapter 1776: Chapter 1777: To Investigate or Not
Cheng Su returned home from the orphanage, and her little brother was there, playing a word game with Qi Xiaoqi. Seeing her, he waved and greeted her.
“You’re here,” Cheng Su said, not in high spirits. “Have a seat.”
Cheng Zhi noticed his sister entering the room without any energy and looked at his nephew. He asked, “What’s wrong with your mom?”
Qi Xiaoqi looked at him, then at the closed room door, and turned his head away.
He was just a kid, oblivious and unable to help.
Mother Cheng brought a basin full of grapes to the table for her son: “Eat some. Usually, following your third uncle, you probably haven’t had much fruit. How about you come stay for a while? Mom will cook something delicious for you.”
“Mom, it’s so far from here to Third Uncle’s place. If I come to stay, what about work? Running back and forth would be exhausting,” Cheng Zhi said, tossing a few grapes into his mouth, and gesturing toward the room, “What’s wrong with my sister? She came back without a word. Is she missing my brother-in-law?”
Mother Cheng slapped his head and scolded, “You rascal, where do you learn all this nonsense? Watch your words.”
Cheng Zhi rubbed his head and stuck out his tongue. “Seriously, if you don’t believe me, ask Xiao Qi. Sister looks really upset.”
Mother Cheng gave him a stern look, then looked toward Cheng Su’s room, feeling uneasy, and walked over to knock on the door.
Hearing Cheng Su’s voice, she opened the door and saw her daughter lying on the bed, then asked, “What’s wrong with you?”
It’s so hot; could it be heatstroke?
She walked over and felt her forehead: “You’re not hot. What’s going on? Go take a shower to cool off.”
“It’s nothing; I’m just a bit tired. Lying down will be fine.” She was tired, and her heart felt tired too.
Mother Cheng mumbled a few words, couldn’t get her to move, and then left.
The door closed softly. Cheng Su opened her eyes and stared at the ceiling, with many thoughts in her mind.
…
The next day, Cheng Su took Qi Xiaoqi to the Cheng family and went to speak with Cheng Yaozu.
“The photo has been confirmed—it is indeed this person,” Cheng Su said, looking at the photo and speaking to Cheng Yaozu.
Cheng Yaozu glanced at it, not surprised, and asked, “What do you think?”
Cheng Su shook her head; she didn’t know.
Should she continue the investigation? She was no longer sure.
Initially, asking Cheng Yaozu to dig into this person’s whereabouts was to find out his relationship with her, but now that it was confirmed he did visit the orphanage, she didn’t dare delve deeper, fearing the truth would be hard to accept.
“You previously mentioned wanting to investigate further. I spoke to Ning Ge; he’s in the Capital and has extensive connections. If you want to continue, he could be helpful,” said Cheng Yaozu, noticing her conflict. “But if you don’t want to investigate further, you can stop. Frankly, he has nothing to do with you, right? He just visited the child you’re sponsoring!”
Cheng Su offered a wry smile. If it was merely a sponsorship relationship with the child, there was no need for deeper investigation. But they didn’t know the underlying reasons.
Cheng Yaozu had been observing her face and saw the conflict and inner struggle on her face. He found it strange but said nothing.
Everyone has their secrets.
Cheng Su looked at the photo. The man stared straight ahead, his eyes devoid of emotion.
She closely examined his face, trying to find some traces resembling Little Cheng Su. However, there were none.
If not family, then an enemy? If an enemy, why did he come?
It was a mystery.
But if she found this man, could she also find Little Cheng Su’s parents?
Cheng Su’s heart stirred. She bit her lip and looked at him: “Find him! Find him!”
