Chapter 604 The Princess Hears The Voice Of The Goddess
Chapter 604 The Princess Hears The Voice Of The Goddess
Edited by: Kanaa-senpai
As Shinji and the others began to retreat from the valley, Coral, who remained in the village of the Dragonmen, had finished her tour of the village with Himeno and was returning to her assigned room. The reason she wanted to tour the village was to avoid wasting time, even a little.
Even when speaking to Princess Coral, Himeno spoke without hesitation. The candid conversation, while maintaining a minimum level of politeness, felt refreshing, and Coral enjoyed a meaningful time, though it also made her feel a sense of responsibility.
(Restraining from making babies… In case of an emergency, it would be difficult to move if one is pregnant. Moreover, since Himeno-san is one of the village’s top fighters, it’s only natural that she falls into the category of those who should restrain themselves.)
It wasn’t that the village head was forcing them, but if the husbands were on edge every day about the valley, a mood of restraint would naturally arise.
Even if monsters overflowed from the valley, it seems that a method of retreating while protecting those who are already pregnant has already been established, and Himeno has given her stamp of approval. She laughed, saying that she would fight to help the villagers escape as a lord in that case.
Witnessing that, Coral suddenly felt embarrassed about her life, which had prioritized her own desires until now.
She had wished for a connection to the sea and desired the lordship, yet she spent her days immersed in the port town of Teremoro, leaving governance to her in-laws. By generating enormous profits there and continuously reinvesting them in the territory, she had silenced any complaints.
While some of the villagers expressed joy that life had improved since Coral became the lord, it was merely a side effect of her desire to remain connected to the sea, rooted in her self-centered mentality.
Coral, self-deprecatingly admitting that she lacked the spirit to stand up and smile for the sake of the people, was met with Himeno’s hearty laughter.
’Having happy villagers is better than just me. I may seem calm now, but until I married Mitono, I was nothing but a nuisance in many ways. If you regret it, just change. That’s all there is to it.’
The nearby Dragonmen chatted casually, remembering how the young lady had always been a tomboy and how things had gotten pretty wild back then. Himeno blushed as she admitted it, and in that warm, down-to-earth atmosphere──so unlike what you’d expect from royalty──Coral couldn’t help but smile.
The knight who had been guarding her, having seen the entire journey of the once reckless princess as she grew into someone truly aware of her responsibilities as a royal and a leader, let his stern demeanor slip and quietly shed tears.
After all these experiences, Coral returned to her room, thinking over her own actions and realizing just how much her father, the king, and her mother, the queen, had spoiled her.
There were so many past memories that made her want to cringe from embarrassment. With shame and regret building up, Coral finally acknowledged that her obsession with the sea wasn’t normal. And the answer to that mystery would come from an unexpected source.
’It is related to the blood that flows within you.’
”Wha!? Who!?”
Startled by the sudden voice echoing in her head, Coral involuntarily shouted, causing the knight waiting outside to rush into the room.
”Princess!? What happened!?”
”I suddenly heard a voice…”
’It seems I startled you. I am here.’
As if reacting to the words, the statue of Goddess Arian enshrined in the room began to glow faintly. The reason only Coral could hear the voice──and not the knight──was because she had inherited the factor of the divine artifact user: the apostle of the goddess, a power once absorbed and passed down through the royal family.
That factor was telling Coral that the presence speaking through the statue was Goddess Arian.
”Could it be, the goddess…?”
’That’s right. I am Goddess Arian. Coral, I have a request for you, but first, let me answer your question.’
”Princess? I can’t hear anything. Stay calm!”
To the female knight, it only appeared that Coral was suddenly losing her composure. It was only natural for him to try to pull her away from the goddess statue, which seemed to be the cause.
’Coral, please touch her. That way, my voice will reach her, and she will be able to sense my presence.’
”Yes, I understand.”
”Princess…!?”
The moment Coral’s fingertips brushed the knight, she gasped, feeling the overwhelming presence radiating from the goddess statue. Confronted by a force so immense that even someone as capable as her──a knight who could defend the princess──couldn’t fully measure, Coral began to grasp the true meaning behind the goddess’s message.
Even so, the knight stood firm in front of her, driven by the pride of serving the royal family. If there truly was a being claiming to be a goddess, the knight was prepared to become Coral’s shield and ensure her escape.
’You are a good knight. In light of your loyalty, let us continue to speak.’
”Thank you, Goddess…”
What Goddess Arian speaks of is a story from long before the Zia Kingdom ruled the continent.
Nowadays, setting sail and fishing in the sea is pretty standard, but back in the day, the waters around this continent were swarming with massive, dangerous sea monsters, making it almost impossible to get close to the ocean.
Things got even worse when amphibious monsters, capable of coming onto land, showed up out of nowhere. People were forced to retreat further inland, and life became incredibly tough.
To help out, Goddess Arian gave a divine artifact to a young man. With a trident that held the sea god’s power, he fought off the land-walking monsters and pushed them back into the ocean.
He even used that power to drive sea creatures far to the south, permanently reshaping the tides so that they could never threaten the continent again. He created a stormy area of the sea, full of constant thunderstorms, to keep the monsters at bay.
Thanks to his heroics, the young man was invited to become a royal consort, and over time, his descendants spread across different nations. Those descended from divine artifact users, called the goddess’s apostles, often possessed extraordinary abilities and were naturally sought after by royal families looking to strengthen their lineages. The Zia family, the continent’s only remaining royal house, is one such example.
’You possess the talent of a divine artifact user. You have a talent close to that of the one who once wielded the trident. The reason you are so drawn to the sea is likely because you can sense the presence of the divine artifact that continues to exert its power beneath the sea.’
”…the trident.”
Even though it should be the first time she’s ever heard that name, saying it out loud fills Coral with a strange sense of nostalgia. Goddess Arian realizes that Coral’s soul has been reincarnated as a divine artifact user but chooses not to say anything.
There’s no proof to back up the goddess’s claims, and the story sounds so grand that the knight can’t bring herself to fully believe it. But Coral knows, deep down in her soul──beyond any logic or reason──that the ancient tale is real.
”Goddess, thank you. Hearing your story has made things clear to me. It feels as if a weight has been lifted from my chest.”
’It is fine. I originally intended to speak about your relationship with the divine artifact. My request is closely related to the divine artifact.’
”What is this request…? I cannot possibly be of help to you, Goddess…”
Just after regretting her way of life, Coral’s self-esteem has plummeted. In such a state, even when Goddess Arian speaks to her in a gentle voice, she cannot respond immediately. However, if it involves the valley, the situation is different.
’This is something crucial to resolving the anomaly in the valley, and it is something I can only ask of you.’
”──Could you please tell me more about it?”
’Then, I will now speak of something highly confidential. Please release the knight from your side.’
”Understood.”
”Princess…”
The knight watches anxiously as Coral releases her hand without hesitation, but when she conveys with her gaze that it is alright, he has no choice but to remain silent.
Coral, having resolved to cooperate with anything, is taken aback and left speechless upon learning of the ‘request’ that Goddess Arian speaks of.
