Chapter 640 The True Nature of the Apostle of God

Chapter 640 The True Nature of the Apostle of God

At the great table set in the center of the canopy, Richt spread a map. It was no detailed chart, more a broad sketch, but sufficient to grasp positions at a glance.

This map too was one of Luluane’s achievements: a summoned beast capable of flight had crossed into enemy territory, gathering fragments of knowledge and stitching them into a whole. Yet the deepest areas of the Enemy Nation remained blank. There, the chance of being shot down was too high. Once already, one of Luluane’s summoned beasts had nearly fallen from the skies.

A beast lost was gone forever. Since they were true living creatures, death severed the bond. Still, if they returned alive, they were healed completely upon dismissal—thus summoners took utmost care not to let them die. That was why reconnaissance of the deepest zones had been abandoned, leaving empty spaces on the map.

”Currently, operations to reclaim those abducted by the Hated Nation are underway across the land,” Richt said, lowering his brush to carve a heavy X over a square mark. “Just yesterday, we freed many civilians and crushed another of their strongholds. Survivors without shelter will, as always, flee to the nearest base.”

On the parchment, multiple Xs already scarred the enemy’s holdings. They encircled the uncharted voids, each stroke drawing the noose tighter. Step by step, the resistance meant to close the gap and at last annihilate the zealots within.

The rescued were already sent safely to the rear. Scouts had begun searching for the next base, even considering moving the temporary camp forward. Shinji listened in silence, his eyes steady as Richt explained every detail.

”I understand. Thank you for the explanation,” Shinji said.

”You’re welcome. Anything else you wish to ask?” Richt replied.

”Yes. I wish to confirm something about the Apostle of God. I’ve heard you’ve fought them before—their power, specifically.”

”…What do you mean?” Richt asked, wary.

”I once thwarted a scheme of the former goddess Satin,” Shinji said evenly. “In doing so, I fought her servants.”

He recalled the succubus who had obeyed Satin’s commands. Just as Arian favored spirits and Padra entrusted herself to phantasmal beasts, Satin had leaned upon demons. The zealots’ rituals—capturing unbelievers, offering sacrifices—were steeped in that same demonic worship. If Satin’s apostles drew strength from such pacts, then perhaps Shinji, bonded to the half-succubus Freri, could imagine the truth.

”In that battle, I noticed similarities between myself and the enemy. I’d like confirmation—without misunderstanding.”

”I see. Luluane,” Richt said, turning. “You fought them yourself. Would you listen as well?”

”Of course,” Luluane answered, eyes sharpening. “But if his power resembles theirs, I expect you’ll explain why.”

Only yesterday, Luluane had invoked her trump card granted by Goddess Padra. Among the enemy she had fought were Satin’s apostles, their strength pressing her to the brink.

”Very well,” Shinji said. He raised his hand. “O furnace burning with impurity as fuel.”

A sphere of black radiance formed above his palm. Though smaller than his usual Furnace of Lust, it churned with the same ominous energy. This version was designed for drawn-out battles: weaker but steadier, easier to control.

Its aura, however, was unchanged—foul, corrupted, unmistakably demonic. Any adventurer from his original world would have recognized it at once.

(Too obvious. I couldn’t ever use this back home… If only I could, I’d have far more reserves.)

The gazes around him shifted—from shock to suspicion to outright hostility. Only Luluane and her apprentice remained steady, studying him carefully without prejudice.

”There’s no mistake,” Luluane said at last. “It’s the same power.”

”Then the source must be a demon contract,” Shinji replied. “Thank you.”

”Anything we can do against it?” Richt asked quickly.

”Not yet. If I find a countermeasure, I’ll share it.”

”Understood. We’ll count on you,” Luluane said.

”Yes,” Richt added, voice heavy. “Many of our comrades have fallen to the Apostles of God. If you know how to defeat them, tell us.”

”I’ll do what I can,” Shinji said.

Richt bowed his head, already recovering his composure. He was the sort of leader who could accept both filth and purity when necessity demanded it.

Luluane and her apprentice did not waver—why would they? Shinji was the chosen apostle of Goddess Arian; his every power bore divine sanction. Luluane thought only that it was good to know exactly how to rely upon him.

The others were not so easily convinced. Many still recoiled, seeing in Shinji’s magic the very force that had slain their allies. As a newcomer, he earned suspicion rather than trust.

”Richt, are you serious?!” one of the men burst out.

”I’m not asking you to like it. But don’t get in the way. This is necessary,” Richt said firmly.

”Tch… Maybe so, but…”

Dark, resentful stares fell on Shinji, more than he expected. He answered them with a strained smile, though inwardly his caution sharpened. If even the commanders balked, then the rank-and-file likely thought the same. Repairing relations might cost too much; perhaps mutual utility was all he could hope for.

The air between Richt and the officers grew taut, nearly snapping. But none dared defy their leader outright. They yielded with ill grace, and silence fell again. Shinji held his tongue.

And into that tense quiet, Luluane spoke.

”Though Apostles of God wield the power of demons, they also rely on weapons. If you despise Shinji for drawing upon the same power, would you not also despise those who wield swords? The difference lies only in the means of striking. The ones to resent are the Apostles of God who harmed your comrades—not Shinji.”

It was an irrefutable argument. Yet this was not the moment to voice it. Their emotions were too raw. They did not lack understanding; they simply lacked the calm to accept it.

”Luluane, I understand. But please, no more,” one of the men said.

”No—it is we who are at fault. Forgive us, Shinji,” another admitted.

”Think nothing of it. I understand your feelings,” Shinji replied.

The officers bowed their heads, but Shinji could read their hearts still seething beneath the gesture. This was how distrust took root—not in open defiance, but in the small abrasions that accumulated unseen, until the air itself grew heavy with it.

(To be a pure Apostle is not wrong. But an organization cannot run on ideals alone. At worst, they may prove less flexible than Alvin ever was.)

He thought of his lord, a noble who had learned to temper pride with adaptability. But when Shinji glanced toward Tiana and the others, they remained silent. No balancing word would come from them today.

By chance, his eyes met Richt’s.

In that silent exchange, Shinji realized Richt saw it too: this polished façade of cooperation could fracture at any moment. Richt’s intuition echoed his own, and though they had met only recently, understanding passed wordlessly between them.

”Then, to return to the matter: that concludes the explanation. The search party will take some time to return. Let us adjourn for now,” Richt declared.

”Very well. Then once more, I ask your cooperation,” came Shinji reply.

And with that, the tense meeting ended—forced into closure, yet unresolved beneath the surface.

Satin commanded succubi.

Even her Apostles drew their power from demons.

Luluane—ever the model student.

The officers—strong-armed, favored for muscle over mind.

Richt—the one who must bear the burden.

And so, the story pressed onward.
