Chapter 2657: The Last Three Survivors
Chapter 2657: The Last Three Survivors
As more and more soldiers were killed and removed from the drill, the burden on those remaining only grew heavier, forcing them to take on an increasing number of Celestial Beings at once.
Since this was a group effort, practically every soldier fought alongside a squad, including Ironwoman. The only ones still fighting alone were those whose teammates had already been eliminated or who were too surrounded by enemies to receive any assistance.
Of course, there was Yuan, who was fighting alone by choice.
Not only had he been fighting alone this entire time, but he wasn’t even fighting seriously.
’What was the record again? 979 Celestial Beings?’
Yuan looked at his own score as he avoided the Celestial Beings’ attacks left and right.
"> <Total Points: 4,162>
"..."
Before he realized it, he’d already surpassed the record more than four times.
’Well, there’s nothing I can do now that I’ve passed the record. But I should still hold back a little...’ Yuan thought to himself.
Time continued to pass, and at the end of the fourth day, the number of soldiers halved.
By the end of the fifth day, the number fell even more, and less than a thousand soldiers remained on the battlefield.
In less than a week, the entire city had been reduced to ruins, without a single building left standing.
At the start of the seventh day, exactly a week after the real drill began, the number of soldiers had fallen to below a hundred. Meanwhile, there were still thousands... tens of thousands of Celestial Beings.
However, even though the Celestial Beings vastly outnumbered the soldiers, it wasn’t as though the soldiers had to fight all of them at once, as there was clearly a limit to how many could engage each soldier at any given time.
Even so, most of the soldiers were utterly exhausted and barely holding on. By the end of the seventh day, their numbers had dwindled by eighty percent, leaving fewer than twenty soldiers left in the drill.
"I don’t get it. How is someone at the Fifth Ascension able to last this long?" a soldier suddenly asked aloud.
Soldiers who had been removed from the drill were allowed to spectate the remaining participants, and at that moment, most of them were watching Yuan.
"Well, he’s famous for having a tremendous and abnormal amount of energy. I heard he could wield the minigun nonstop for days."
"He must have a powerful technique that allows him to recover his Limitless. Otherwise, it doesn’t make any sense."
"To possess such a powerful technique... I wonder where he’s from."
"I heard a rumor saying that he’s actually from another city."
"How much longer do you think he’ll last? He’s slowed down tremendously compared to yesterday."
Five more soldiers fell within the next six hours.
"It’s really hard to believe that he’s a new soldier. His combat experience is on another level..."
"For a combat instructor like you to praise him so highly..."
After another six hours, the number of soldiers remaining fell below ten.
"To think he’d reach the top 10 on his first drill!"
"Do you think he’s broken the previous record of the most Celestial Beings defeated?"
"Definitely, but he won’t be the only one to break a record. Seeing how the Ironwoman is taking this drill seriously, she’ll likely break it, too."
"I guess she’s heard the rumor of Sergeant Yuan being seen as her rival."
By the end of the eighth day, only three soldiers were left in the drill.
The Ironwoman, Yuan, and another soldier bearing the insignia of a Colonel.
"Congratulations, General Mei! With two of our soldiers, Ironwoman and Sergeant Yuan, dominating the drill, General Gu must be shaking with worry!" one of her officers remarked.
Mei Feng nodded and said, "Although the drill is important, it won’t be enough to secure my promotion."
The drill continued for another three days without anyone else being eliminated. However, two days later, the Colonel finally fell, leaving only Ironwoman and Yuan left in the drill.
’So it’s just the two of us now...’
Yuan briefly considered whether he should continue or simply give up and let Ironwoman take the victory—even though this wasn’t a competition.
After some thought, however, he decided against giving up so easily. It would undoubtedly draw even more unnecessary attention to himself, but at this point, he felt it was already too late to worry about that.
’Let’s see how long you can last!’
One day... two days... three days passed with only Ironwoman and Yuan remaining on the battlefield, yet neither of them showed any signs of nearing defeat.
Five days... six days... seven...
The drill entered its second week, yet Ironwoman and Yuan still remained on the battlefield.
Yuan had long since given up on defeating the Celestial Beings and shifted his focus entirely to survival, using Void Manipulation nonstop to evade their attacks. His main reason for not fighting them was simply because he didn’t want to increase his points too much, but another reason was that the Celestial Beings being spawned are all at least the Seventh Ascension.
"That guy is trying to outlast the Ironwoman!"
"Isn’t it technically cheating if he’s not even fighting anymore?" one of the spectators remarked.
"Not really... Just look at the difference in their cultivation. It’d be unreasonable to expect him to keep fighting them at this point. Hell, I’d even argue that using Void Control nonstop is more exhausting than fighting."
"What’s the point of continuing if he’s not going to fight? The purpose of this drill isn’t to survive for as long as possible, but to defeat as many Celestial Beings as you can. If you can’t do that anymore, you might as well give up."
Yuan’s actions quickly divided the spectators into two camps. One side supported his actions, while the other questioned the point of continuing.
"Knowing him, he’s probably using this opportunity to train his Void Control," said Shi Fa.
"Not probably. Definitely," said Wu Wang.
