Chapter 2658: End of the Drill
Chapter 2658: End of the Drill
Another week has passed since Yuan and Ironwoman became the last two survivors of the drill, meaning they’d spent three weeks fight nonstop at this point.
’Looks like she’s on her last leg.’ Yuan thought to himself after seeing the Ironwoman’s condition.
’I guess it’s about time for me to give up...’
However, Yuan suddenly realized something.
’Will I even be able to lose?’ he wondered inwardly.
After all, with his regeneration, it might be impossible for him to die normally. Moreover, he was worried about revealing his healing capabilities to the military.
’I am already suspected of being a Void Specter... If I reveal my regeneration ability, that might give them more ammunition against me.’
After some consideration, Yuan decided against giving up. In fact, he decided that if he had already made it this far, he might as well survive until the end.
A few hours later, Ironwoman finally exhausted all of her energy and fell to the Celestial Beings.
"H-He actually outlasted the Ironwoman!"
The spectators were left in awe by the unexpected outcome, as everyone was certain that the Ironwoman would be the last survivor.
"How much longer do you think he’ll last?"
"What’s the point of trying to stay alive now that he’s the last one standing? He’s already proved his point."
"Right? It’s not like he can defeat the Celestial Beings, either."
Shortly after Ironwoman was removed from the drill, Yuan decided to give up as well. Since he was already the last survivor, there was no point in continuing, especially when even he couldn’t defeat the Celestial Beings without relying on Eternal Essence.
To avoid making his surrender too obvious, Yuan continued dodging their attacks for several more minutes before deliberately allowing one of the Celestial Beings to land a direct hit, its Limitless striking him squarely in the heart.
"..."
"..."
"Damn it..."
Yuan let out a deep sigh when he realized he hadn’t died or been removed from the drill.
His greatest concern had come true. Because of his regeneration, he was literally incapable of dying through normal means.
’Let’s try this again...’
After pretending like the first strike wasn’t fatal, Yuan continued evading the Celestial Beings’ attack for another minute before letting them strike him again. This time, however, he struck himself with his own Eternal Essence, ensuring that he died from it.
"> <You have died>
"> <You have been teleported>
Yuan found himself back in the military base at the Parade Deck after being teleported.
Moments later, Mei Feng and General Gu appeared before them and said, "With the last soldier out of the battlefield, we will end the drill here."
General Gu continued, "Although the drill ends here, it will not be the last one, and we intend to have another one in three years. Those of you who performed poorly during this drill will be required to participate in supplementary training. That is all."
Mei Feng then said, "Besides Ironwoman and Sergeant Yuan, you’re all now dismissed."
The soldiers scattered the next moment.
"Come with me to my office," Mei Feng said to Yuan and Ironwoman afterward.
Some time later, once they were inside her office, Mei Feng said, "First and foremost, I want to say good work. You’ve both managed to perform beyond expectations and even broken the record."
She turned to look at Yuan and asked, "What did you think of the drill?"
"Quite frankly, I’m a little disappointed," he shrugged.
"Can you elaborate?" Mei Feng asked, raising an eyebrow at his response.
"There’s not much to it. Do we simply fight until we can’t fight anymore? What’s the purpose of that?" Yuan asked.
Mei Feng remained silent for a moment before responding, "Because we don’t know the full extent of the threat we’ll face in the future, we can only prepare in a way that gives our soldiers the greatest chance of survival. If the drill is too easy, they won’t learn anything from it and will be woefully unprepared when the real threat arrives."
"With that being said, it’s not impossible to win the drill. It just hasn’t happened yet."
"Is there a reward for beating it?" Yuan then asked.
"I knew you’d ask that," Mei Feng sighed before responding, "But to answer your question... no, not really, but the better your performance, the faster you’ll be promoted, which is your goal, right?"
Yuan nodded.
"Well, considering your performance this time... I won’t be surprised if you’ve already earned enough merits to be promoted again, even though you’ve just received your promotion."
Yuan then said, "Speaking of promotions... when does my credential rank increase? It’s been a while since it happened."
Mei Feng fell silent for a moment before a look of realization appeared on her face.
"I forgot to tell you, but your credential rank doesn’t automatically increase after rank 3. You’ll need to manually apply for an upgrade."
"Seriously?" Yuan sighed out loud.
"Sorry." Mei Feng apologized.
"Well, that’s fine. Where do I go to increase it?"
"I can show you after this," said Ironwoman.
"Okay."
The Ironwoman then asked, "Anyway, why’d you call us?"
Mei Feng’s expression turned serious as she responded, "An assembly has been initiated. I believe you know what’ll be discussed even without needing me to say it."
The Ironwoman quietly turned her head to look at Yuan.
"I think I have an idea," she said a moment later.
"The highest-ranking authority from each military will be attending this assembly, so our Supreme General will have to travel to the meeting location. I want the two of you to escort him there," Mei Feng said.
"Wait..." Ironwoman quickly interjected. "I understand why you’d want to send me, but why send him as well when he’s the main subject of the discussion?"
"I have two reasons. First, I hope to clear up the misunderstanding before it spreads any further. Second... I want him to become acquainted with the Supreme General. Although the Supreme General will likely seek him out sooner or later after his performance at the drill, I’d rather it be sooner than later."
