Chapter 949: Save or Kill
Chapter 949: Save or Kill
Since Hannah and Lin Yu communicated directly through their minds, they weren’t limited by the speed of speech in reality.
Even so, it still took Lin Yu a little while to fully understand everything Hannah had told him.
“The eyes are its weakness, especially the ones closer to the inside? Got it.”
Lin Yu looked up. April’s struggles in the air had grown weaker and weaker.
The Black-Ink Twin-Headed Octopus had clearly almost squeezed April unconscious.
“Time to act.”
Lin Yu let out a long breath, then drew in a lungful of air and stepped to the edge of the tilted ship. He folded his arms across his chest and jumped straight down.
“Splash!”
His rigid body plunged like a falling sword, piercing the surface of the water. The momentum from gravity carried him three or four meters beneath the surface in an instant.
He opened his eyes and saw the enormous monster in the dim water.
The two-headed octopus, larger than the entire ship, was coiled beneath the sinking vessel. Its four pairs of square-pupiled eyes fixed on Lin Yu, who had suddenly entered the water.
“Gah, Director, I understand now. Cousin Cha said these octopuses have a nesting habit. It probably thought this sunken ship was the right size and was planning to drag it back to its nest!”
Lin Yu narrowed his eyes. “Is its nest nearby?”
“Yes, Director. The Sea Demons probably planned the attack around this location,” Hannah said.
“I see.”
Lin Yu felt that there were more and more suspicious things about this “attack.”
But… investigating what was behind it wasn’t important right now.
What mattered was dealing with the trouble at hand.
“It’s got such an obvious weak point, yet it lets its eyes grow this big?” Lin Yu remarked, looking at an eye about the size of a basketball. “Looks like this creature’s evolution really is incomplete.”
“Then let me help it with natural selection. Survival of the fittest.”
He muttered to himself. Even though Hannah, the only one who knew his true identity, was his sole audience, Lin Yu still slipped into the role of Yayu, unconsciously speaking the lines Yayu would say.
And his immersion wasn’t limited to the “lines”!
His actions followed suit!
“Whoosh!”
Beneath the water, Lin Yu shot toward the space between the octopus’s two heads like an arrow loosed from a bow.
The Black-Ink Twin-Headed Octopus knew perfectly well that the spot Lin Yu was approaching was its weak point. Its tentacles immediately lunged toward him.
But…
It was too late.
“Squelch!”
Compared to a head as big as a truck, the basketball-sized eye wasn’t all that large. But for Lin Yu, it was still an absurdly easy target to hit!
The Runic Short Sword pierced the eye on the inner side of the left head, and blue blood spread through the dark water.
The sword went in extremely deep, and Lin Yu twisted it viciously, wreaking massive damage on the octopus’s nervous system.
Before its tentacles, sluggish as they were compared to Lin Yu, could reach him, the agony of its damaged nerves made them spasm and twitch.
It had no “expression,” but judging by the violent thrashing of its gigantic body, it was clearly in excruciating pain!
And that wasn’t all.
Lin Yu pulled out the short sword, turned, and pierced its other eye as well.
The octopus thrashed even more violently.
Without using any extra items, Lin Yu had “taken care of” the enormous monster with nothing but his formidable physical abilities.
After all…
“However big it is, at its core it’s still just a farmed ‘ingredient.’”
Lin Yu delivered his cold assessment and put away the Runic Short Sword.
“Splash!”
A tremendous sound came from above, and the current surged wildly downward. The tentacle that had previously reached out of the water and lifted April now crashed helplessly onto the surface.
April fell into the water too. Lin Yu clearly saw her figure beside the tentacle, entering the water half a second later and sinking steadily.
“She’s probably already unconscious.”
Lin Yu sighed and quickly swam toward April.
……
“So cold…”
April’s head felt groggy and heavy.
What was going on? Had she caught a cold?
Why couldn’t she move? Was she experiencing sleep paralysis?
Number Eight… Never mind. She couldn’t rely on that guy. All he did was play games.
When they’d gone on a trip together before, she’d gotten sick, and he hadn’t done a thing. He hadn’t even bought her any medicine.
He really was a terrible boyfriend.
Oh, wait. Number Eight was already dead… She’d killed him.
Right, he’d cheated on her.
But that had happened a while ago, too.
Painful, hazy memories surged into her mind. The bitterness of being betrayed mingled with the devastation of having killed someone she’d cherished, and April was once again confronted with that painful truth.
She had long since said goodbye to an “ordinary life.”
Right, she was in the Pure Abyss, doing a dungeon.
She’d been attacked by a monster just now, so she must have lost consciousness.
No, no… She had to wake up right away!
She had to save herself. After all, in this cruel game, there was no one she could depend on or trust.
If anything, she’d never met anyone reliable in her entire life!
Anxious and restless, April shouted and sat upright.
“Ah! Get away!”
On instinct, she took the Tranquilizer Pistol from her item space, only to realize…
She seemed to be on a small boat.
The waves rose and fell, gently rocking the vessel, but it was fairly steady overall.
The sky and the surrounding sea were still pitch-black, and the moon had shifted a little.
She felt a slight ache in a few places on her body, as if she’d been cut. But when she looked toward the sore spots, she saw that the wounds had all been bandaged.
And the person who had done all this…
Was clearly the girl sitting at the stern with her knees drawn up, resting with her eyes closed. She wore a gray, fitted athletic tank top, and her hair hung loose.
The other girl was also April’s teammate on this trip… Yayu.
Her dark blue hoodie had been hung on a wooden pole. Her hair was wet and messy, yet thick, like the raised, coarse fur along the back of a North American gray wolf April had seen in a documentary.
Her body was also covered in fine scars… Slashes, claw marks, bites, and raised scars.
Scars of all kinds covered her powerful, distinctly muscled physique. They did nothing to diminish her beauty. Instead, they looked like the patterns and master signatures adorning an expensive luxury item.
April stared blankly for a moment before she understood.
“Y-you saved me?”
Hearing April’s question, Yayu opened her fierce eyes and looked at her. She hadn’t reacted even when April had shouted earlier.
“No. I didn’t save you. I just killed the monster that nearly killed you.”
