Death Game: Starting as a Trickster, Pretending to Be a God

Chapter 950: Sharing a Delicious Tentacle

Chapter 950: Sharing a Delicious Tentacle

“Slaughtering the monster that nearly killed me.” April chewed over his words, then realized what he meant. “What? Isn’t that just you saving me? Why put it so cryptically?”

“Our motives were different. That matters. I didn’t attack to save you... That monster was just in the way, so I killed it. We may be teammates, but don’t assume I’ll help you every time.”

Hearing Lin Yu’s rather cutting words, April felt a little displeased.

But the person in front of her had, objectively speaking, saved her, so she didn’t lash out. She only said glumly, “I didn’t think that. Besides, I’m not stupid enough to need you to save me every time... But one thing at a time. I owe you for this.”

Lin Yu nodded. “Then I’ll remember that. You owe me a favor.”

April looked at him. The two fell silent for a moment before she spoke again. “Still, you’re pretty impressive. You took down something that huge just like that.”

“If you know Pure Abyss well enough, and understand this thing’s weaknesses, you’ll know that despite its size, it’s actually quite clumsy and not hard to kill,” Lin Yu said casually. “It’s called a Black-Ink Twin-Headed Octopus. Its weak points are the eyes on the inside. Hit them, and it’s almost certainly dead or crippled... It looks terrifying in the wild and in the Four Outer Seas, but in the Central Sea, it’s just livestock raised as ‘food,’ like goats or domestic pigs. A lowly creature.”

Then Lin Yu said bluntly, “From the way you talked earlier, I thought you really knew Pure Abyss.”

April truly had no idea what the creature was.

Pure Abyss had a diversity of marine life that no other world could possibly match. Even a veteran player who had spent years exploring Pure Abyss, someone like Chris, couldn’t be expected to name every Sea People creature on sight and know its traits and weaknesses.

But Lin Yu had Hannah, his very own cheat code, so he was naturally confident.

After all, for Hannah, recognizing all kinds of Sea People and fish and remembering their traits was basic preschool education, as fundamental as learning to read and count.

After being mocked like that by Lin Yu, April was at a loss for words.

The fact that Lin Yu had accurately identified the monster that attacked them really did show that he knew Pure Abyss far better than she did.

So April only pursed her lips and said, “You should’ve said earlier that you knew Pure Abyss so well...”

She knew this complaint was just an attempt to save face and had no real ground to stand on, so she spoke very quietly.

But Lin Yu had no intention of letting her off the hook.

“I thought at first that you really knew this place... I didn’t expect you to get beaten up so badly by a piece of food.”

He spoke, then paused. “Forget it. Without you, I wouldn’t have gotten this mission anyway. Just don’t get in my way from now on... Want to try some of this Black-Ink Twin-Headed Octopus?”

After he’d made a dismissive remark about her and then immediately asked if she wanted something to eat, April, who’d been about to voice her displeasure, suddenly couldn’t find a way to object to his earlier contempt.

She could only answer helplessly, “Sure. It was planning to eat me, after all... But where is it?”

Lin Yu reached over and tugged at a length of hemp rope hanging from the side of the boat and trailing beneath the water. He hauled a thick tentacle up from the sea.

“We’re short on time, and this boat can only carry so much. We can take just one tentacle, so we’ll have to waste the rest,” Lin Yu said with a sigh. He paused, then added, “Though I guess it won’t really go to waste. The other Sea People in these waters will probably eat it... It’ll become part of the ecosystem.”

As he spoke, Lin Yu dragged the tentacle onto the boat, took out his Runic Short Sword, and said, “Hands out. Both of them.”

April held out both hands in confusion. Then she watched as Lin Yu sliced the meat from the tentacle into thin pieces. The translucent, firm slices landed in her hands, cool to the touch.

“Do we eat it just like this?”

April looked curiously at the slices in her hands.

“Should I get a pot and fry it for you?” Lin Yu put two thick slices of his own into his mouth. “This stuff is meant to be eaten as sashimi.”

Watching Lin Yu chew with gusto, April hesitantly put a piece in her mouth. The fresh, delicious flavor and pleasantly springy texture immediately took her by surprise.

“This... is actually really good.”

She said it in astonishment. Lin Yu gave a cold snort. “Of course. Most Sea People in Pure Abyss make excellent ‘food.’ Even the highest-quality seafood in our world can’t compare.”

Besides, Lin Yu hadn’t chosen this tentacle at random. Following Hannah’s instructions, he’d cut off the Black-Ink Twin-Headed Octopus’s tastiest part.

“All right, that’s enough. I’m planning to sell the rest at the Tide Summoning Festival and use it as our start-up capital.”

As he spoke, Lin Yu tossed the tentacle back into the sea.

April finally remembered. “Oh, speaking of that... Where are we now?”

“I’m not sure, but we should be a few hundred meters from where the ship sank. I haven’t been rowing, but the tide is pushing our boat along,” Lin Yu said, shaking his head. “It doesn’t matter, though. If we haven’t drifted too far... the mermaids will come looking for us at daybreak.”

April nodded. “That’s true. But how long until daybreak?”

She looked up at the waning moon in the sky, unable to tell.

“About two or three hours,” Lin Yu said. He might not know much about Pure Abyss, but Hannah could answer questions like that for him. “Want to sleep some more? You already slept for over an hour.”

Hearing Lin Yu’s words, April froze. “I was out for that long?”

“No, you fell asleep... You were unconscious at first, but after you threw up the water, your breathing gradually steadied. You were definitely asleep,” Lin Yu said calmly. “And you were talking in your sleep, too... You kept saying things like, ‘I feel awful.’”

“I only bandaged your wounds because you were groaning there and getting on my nerves.”

April froze at his words. “Really? I actually fell asleep... But thanks anyway.”

“No need to thank me.” Lin Yu furrowed his brows, as if he wasn’t used to being thanked. “All right, if there’s nothing else... let’s get some more rest.”

“After the Fish People come looking for us tomorrow, we’ll have to attend the Tide Summoning Festival. We won’t have any time or chance to rest then.”

As Lin Yu spoke, April nodded.

“Right. We’ll have to complete our mission and help the organization collect Mermaid Tears... And we might run into people from Order. There’ll be one problem after another.”

Lin Yu leaned back slowly until he was resting against the wooden pole with his hoodie hanging from it. As he closed his eyes, he said casually, “It’s fine. We’ll deal with them one at a time.”

Looking at him like this, April found the lazy, resting Yayu more dependable than the brash, aggressive, and unruly version she’d seen before.

“I’m starting to understand why Fish gave you such a high evaluation,” she muttered.

But he heard her mutter and replied again, “I told you from the start. I’m strong.”
