Chapter 1956: Sharpening Me!
Chapter 1956: Sharpening Me!
Rose noticed and said quietly, "He’s already noticed you."
"That’s fine," Max said.
Rose glanced at him. "You don’t look worried."
"Should I be?"
Rose stayed quiet for a moment. Then she sighed lightly. "I forgot who I was talking to."
She looked toward the Ravenhart end next.
"The strongest genius of Ravenhart is Seraphine Ravenhart."
Max’s gaze shifted. The Ravenhart platform was the quietest of the four clan ends, and the people seated there looked far more restrained than the rest. Near the center of the highest seating area sat a young woman in a deep violet dress, her black hair falling over one shoulder like silk.
A faint feather-shaped mark rested between her brows, and her eyes carried a strange shade of silver-purple. She looked gentle at first glance, almost scholarly, but the space around her felt off somehow. The shadows near her chair moved slightly even though there was no wind.
Rose’s expression turned even more cautious. "Seraphine is probably the hardest one to read. Ravenhart’s forbidden bloodline branch is tied to shadows, prophecy fragments, soul silence, and fate-like perception. No one really knows how much she can actually see. Some say she can predict where a battle is headed several moves before it happens. Some say she doesn’t predict at all, but instead listens to the hidden rhythm of her opponent’s soul."
Max raised an eyebrow slightly. "Soul and prediction abilities."
"Yes. And unlike Draven, who’s dangerous because of his direct brutality, Seraphine is dangerous because you might not even understand how you lost until the battle’s already over. She’s also at the peak of Law Manifestation Realm."
Max looked at Seraphine Ravenhart. As if sensing his attention, the young woman slowly turned toward him and smiled. It was a small, polite smile, but Max’s eyes narrowed slightly, because for one instant, it felt like her gaze hadn’t landed on his face at all, but somewhere deeper.
Not deep enough to see his real secrets, but enough to make his soul react faintly.
His Dimension of Soul stirred. The slight probing sensation disappeared right away.
Seraphine’s smile didn’t change, but her eyes flickered with interest.
Rose caught the brief exchange. "Don’t underestimate her."
"I won’t."
Rose then turned toward the Evercrest end.
"As for Evercrest, the strongest genius is Aelric Evercrest."
Max looked up. At the center of the Evercrest platform sat a young man in green and silver robes. Compared to Cassian’s sacred brilliance, Draven’s brutal pressure, and Seraphine’s mysterious calm, Aelric looked more refined and elegant.
His face was handsome, his posture relaxed, and his eyes carried the natural confidence of someone who’d been praised his whole life. A lot of Evercrest descendants sat around him with clear respect, and several elders glanced his way with obvious satisfaction.
Rose’s voice turned colder when she said his name.
"Aelric awakened the Evercrest forbidden bloodline at a very high purity. He’s considered the strongest Evercrest heir of the current generation. His mastery over space and life-sealing techniques goes way beyond mine. He can fold the battlefield, seal off movement routes, create hidden domains, and use life force itself as a binding tool."
Max looked at her. "You don’t like him."
Rose’s expression didn’t shift much, but her eyes turned colder. "He was one of the people who told me I should be grateful the clan even let me keep the Evercrest name."
Max looked at Aelric again.
Aelric had noticed them too. Unlike Draven, he didn’t show open hostility. He just looked down from the higher platform with a faint smile, as if Rose’s return amused him more than it bothered him. His gaze shifted to Max next, and that smile turned slightly more polite, though Max could still feel the pride running underneath it.
Rose continued, "Aelric is also at the peak of Law Manifestation Realm. Among Evercrest’s younger generation, he’s almost untouchable. Most people believe he’ll eventually inherit one of the clan’s highest positions once he enters the Divine Lord Realm."
"And if I beat him?" Max asked.
Rose paused, then looked at him.
"If you beat Aelric in the Bloodline Legacy Battle, the Evercrest Clan loses face, and I gain far more legacy merit than I would from beating an ordinary representative."
Max smiled faintly. "Then he’s useful."
Rose looked at him for a moment before shaking her head. "You really do treat them like stepping stones."
"Aren’t they?"
For a second, Rose didn’t know whether to laugh or sigh.
Then she went on, "Besides those four, there are other strong participants. Valerius has Lucara Valerius, known for her Sacred Flame Mandate. Ashbourne has Kaelric Ashbourne, Draven’s cousin, who specializes in bone-crushing martial arts and blood armor. Ravenhart has Nox Ravenhart, who’s extremely dangerous in assassination-style fights. Evercrest also has several high-level heirs, including Mirena Evercrest and Solan Evercrest. All of them are at peak Law Manifestation Realm or very close to it."
Max asked, "Are outsiders allowed to represent people too?"
"Yes," Rose said. "Several descendants from the Four Sacred Clans have brought in outsiders. Most of them are hidden monsters from ancient forces, supreme guilds, and forbidden training grounds. Some might not be as famous as the top geniuses from the Cosmic Ascension Conference, but don’t assume that means they’re weak. The Four Sacred Clans have enough influence to invite genuinely dangerous people."
Max nodded slowly.
Rose looked at him seriously. "Your fame from the Cosmic Ascension Conference cuts both ways here. On one hand, no one can dismiss you as some ordinary outsider. On the other hand, plenty of them will want to beat you just to prove themselves. Some will see you as the champion of the Divine Realm’s younger generation. Some will see you as the outsider who dared to step onto the sacred clans’ stage. Some will just hate you because you’re representing me."
Max’s expression stayed calm. "That makes things simple."
"How?"
"They’ll come to me."
Rose looked at him in silence.
Below them, the central battlefield began to glow as the ancient runes woke up one after another. The noise in the arena grew louder. Representatives from the four clans started entering their waiting zones.
Several powerful auras rose up across the platforms, each one belonging to a genius with no intention of staying unnoticed.
Rose took a slow breath.
"Max, remember this. Most of them are at the peak of Law Manifestation Realm. That’s the highest realm allowed in the true young genius battles. Once someone enters the Divine Lord Realm, they’re considered to have crossed the line between genius and elder. That’s why this battle has so many peak Law Manifestation Realm cultivators. They’re all standing right at the last step before becoming elder-level figures."
Max looked out at the arena. Peak Law Manifestation Realm geniuses from the Four Sacred Clans.
Forbidden bloodline inheritors. Ancient clan representatives. Outsider monsters. A battlefield tied to the bloodline legacy of the First Progenitor. And somewhere behind all of it, the mystery of why his own blood had reacted so violently to that statue.
Max’s smile deepened slightly. "Good."
Rose glanced at him. "You keep saying that."
Max kept his gaze fixed on the central battlefield as the runes finished lighting up.
"The stronger they are, the more useful they’ll be."
Rose’s eyes shifted slightly. "Useful for what?"
Max’s gaze stayed locked on the arena.
"For sharpening me."
