Chapter 168: Moon Dancer
Chapter 168: Moon Dancer
Awilix stared at the pitiful goblin. During their fight, she’d gotten stronger...
In multiple ways.
Toy was not only physically stronger than she’d been at the start of their fight, but she’d also begun fighting better with her eyes closed than she’d had with them open.
Meaning...
’She’s evolved.’
Awilix, despite her airheaded demeanor, wasn’t a fool. Aloofness and candor were simply her mask to hide from the world.
So, once she thought about it, accepting what was before her wasn’t difficult.
Toy, the goblin, had proven herself to the cat. She’d proven to have some use.
But, while that was maybe enough for Awilix before the fight, Awilix wasn’t one to back down just because she’d been proven wrong.
Besides...
’I’m not going to lose...’
Despite the beating Awilix had taken before, she was still in a much better shape than the goblin.
Awilix began walking slowly around the room, Toy following her every movement with her head.
’This sucks...’
Awilix now saw only one path to victory...
When the halves of Awilix’s soul fused, she’d not only gained knowledge of this place and her master, but regained memories of her life...
Back on Kaldora, she’d been an outcast of her tribe due to her being weak. Even eventually being exiled.
On her lonely journey after her exile, she’d come across a wandering human circus girl.
Awilix took another step until she stood a few meters before the bloody Toy.
This girl had been exiled from her home as well.
The two made a humorous vow of revenge against their former clans. One they’d thought would never come true. After all, neither had the strength to realize such lofty ambition.
However, as fate would have it, after three years of traveling together, the human girl would die at the hands of Awilix’s brother, who’d been given a mission to find and kill her.
Awilix managed to kill her brother, who was many times stronger than her.
Her body broken and battered, she looked up and saw a full moon. A beautiful moon that dared to reflect its radiance upon a dreadful world.
It was also that day that her aspect awakened.
It was as Awilix basked in that lunar beauty that she stood and danced with the girl’s corpse.
Not as an act of lunacy or insanity, but a tradition from the tribe that abandoned her. When one died in the dance of battle, their corpse would do the dance of victory.
Awilix danced beneath the moon. As she did, she felt something odd envelop her. She didn’t understand at first, but eventually came to understand why her people had that tradition in the first place.
The girl’s soul and Aether had been ripped from the cycle of reincarnation and absorbed by Awilix.
Awilix, staring at Toy, lifted her arm and began to move slowly. Her movements were like flowing water.
The dance of her tribe wasn’t one to commemorate the fallen, but steal their power and soul.
From that day forth, Awilix saw herself as a dumbass — and decided to be one properly. A dumbass dead set on revenge. Revenge on the tribe whose tradition had led her to deny her partner’s rebirth.
They would all be sliced and diced by her steel claws in a macabre dance.
A year later, she awakened her second Trait — Eclipse — and returned to her tribe. With its strength, she killed them all... and died in the process.
’Pitiful...’
’I truly am pitiful.’
Yet, perhaps she wouldn’t have died if she had done the dance, the dance that called upon the girl’s soul and used it for power.
But, she was too distraught at the time to dare use it. Her entire life after her death had been swallowed by guilt. It was only after forgetting her past that Awilix could come to cope with her deed and face the past.
Awilix muttered her name as she danced.
"Selene..."
A foreign power enveloped her and cloaked her body in a light purple.
’Forgive me for using this...’
Awilix was truly a dumbass with immense pride. With clarity of mind she realized...
If she lost a battle, Selene’s soul, which had been absorbed by her, would have lost too.
And if Selene’s soul was a part of her, then Awilix wouldn’t rest until Selene had her revenge on the people who abandoned her.
Even if such a thing were impossible now.
Awilix continued dancing in the Eclipse, no one to witness her.
Toy, with her new sensory ability, followed Awilix’s movements, then cocked her head to the side.
"Beautiful..."
That was the last thing she said before Awilix ended her dance and finally charged Toy.
Toy tried to defend, but it was fruitless.
Sense it as she may, Toy couldn’t overpower an empowered Awilix when already severely battered and bruised.
Awilix punched Toy in the kidney, then liver, then heart.
The goblin coughed up blood and fell to her knees. Toy tried to rise again, but her knees buckled under her own weight.
Awilix dismissed her abilities, then crouched down and helped the bloody goblin to her knees.
Awilix spoke softly.
"Good fight..."
***
Vale had been watching the fight up until the point Awilix’s Eclipse consumed the entire training room.
Vale didn’t exactly know how her ability evolved to be able to grow to such a size, but that wasn’t the issue right now.
The issue was the fight’s underlying connotations...
’Perhaps this was the best outcome...’
The Eclipse had vanished, leaving behind two bloodied women. One who helped the other stand.
Awilix had acknowledged Toy, it seemed.
And Toy...
Vale thought to himself:
’Toy has become Emergent.’
He’d gotten no message of it, but he could clearly sense it. He could sense the pit of strength she had in her core that wasn’t there before.
He could sense within himself a slight innate hesitation to face her in battle.
He could sense that if the two fought again, it was unclear who’d win.
’Actually, Toy is probably stronger at the moment.’
But Toy was too beat up to capitalize on her improvement. She’d accrued too much damage at the beginning of the fight.
Vale looked over to Salome, who had a smug look on her face as she said:
"I knew I was right to have great expectations for her."
