Chapter 312: Set Your Heart Ablaze!
Chapter 312: Set Your Heart Ablaze!
Shouting the phrase to cast [Eclipse] wasn’t something Awilix needed to do anymore; however, saying that coined phrase did help in controlling the difficult ability.
Before, where her darkness would swallow up her immediate surroundings, it was now controlled. Everything to Vale’s left had been split off by a wall of shadow.
But [Eclipse] didn’t just split the space in half… No. Awilix’s ability covered about two thirds of the space, having curved to cover the entire enemy force.
Not being stupid, knowing that some of their enemies might be able to ‘see’ through the veil, like the bats, Salome and Vale retreated to the far edge.
A moment later, a series of high-pitched chirping proved their caution correct.
“Kii-kii.”
Vale didn’t exactly see what had transpired, but a moment later he heard a flurry of flapping wings and screeches followed by the system whispering in his ear.
[Your Champion, Awilix, has slain an Emergent Chiroptera Warrior]
[Your Champion, Awilix, has slain an Emergent Chiroptera Warrior]
Each death within Vale’s [Domain] caused his might to swell.
[Your Champion, Awilix, has slain an Emergent Chiroptera Warrior]
It seemed the bats were all going after Awilix, the closer target; however…
The first to emerge from the [Eclipse] was an imposing dragonkin. One whose scales were green and fairly larger than the others. A supposed Champion.
Once that one made it through, it shouted something in its own language, guiding the others out of the [Eclipse].
While not all managed to follow, perhaps being warded off by Awilix, a vast majority entered the visible space.
Yet they did not blindly charge at Vale and Salome.
Many appeared to want to do just that, but the dragonkin Champion was fervently shouting, forcing the others into submitting to its word. Instead, the group began to shift into formation.
‘It seems that one has to go.’
The ones with shields or tankier bodies surrounded the edge while those who could attack from a distance stayed behind.
But…
‘The commander hiding in the rearguard?’
Vale understood the logic. A commander of mercenaries did not turn his back on his soldiers. Still, it was a mistake.
A true leader showed their command, not told.
Not that it particularly mattered in this situation. Vale’s blade would find them no matter where they stood.
Once in formation, the enemies prepared their first volley of death.
Vale looked over at Salome. With no inflection of fear or doubt, he said:
“When he falls, attack.”
The Demon nodded with a grin plastered on her face. A look of absolute confidence in Vale: her Master, her equal, her partner.
“Understood.”
A few seconds later, the moment the first arrow was released, the world froze.
None moved except Vale and one other. The commander. The green dragonkin who confusedly slashed his scaly head left and right.
“Ah, I’ve made an odd habit of greeting all I call into my world. I guess I’ll continue it, even if you can’t understand me nor live to remember. Welcome, overgrown worm. Welcome to a [World Without Witness].”
Vale took a step toward the mass of frozen creatures, pointing the tip of the onyx blade at his foe. Then, he planted the tip of the blade on the ground and crossed his hands, resting them on the pommel.
Imbuing his words with [Charm], Vale demanded:
“Now, I order you, come here and face me.”
While maybe not entirely smitten with Vale, nor even understanding of what he said, Vale’s inflection did carry a certain weight to it. Whereas the dragonkin would have perhaps been more cautious and taken time discerning what the hell happened, it shot into the air.
Landing upon a frozen arrow, the dragonkin looked down on Vale, then roared:
“Skkkreeeak!”
Its three scaled toes gripped the red arrow’s shaft as it perched and held out its claw.
Flames curled from the tips of its nails and coalesced together. From the condensed mass, a bright spear was born. A blaze rod with three pointed tips — a fire trident.
Lurching back, the dragonkin flung its arm in an arc, then let go.
The trident sailed toward Vale with terrifying speed. But speed and power meant nothing to Vale’s blade.
He calmly picked up [Dominion] and twisted the blade.
The trident crashed into the onyx flat, instantly halting, as if frozen like the rest of the space’s inhabitants.
But, it wasn’t frozen.
It was merely at an instantaneous rest.
When gravity remembered to inflict its force upon the fire trident, it fell and bounced on the hollow ground, dissipating into ashy wisps.
The dragonkin sneered, then grew two more fire tridents, holding one in each hand.
Kicking off of the arrow, the dragonkin slammed its body to the ground, studying Vale with its golden irises and vertical slit red pupils.
It was as Vale studied his foe studying him that he couldn’t help but note that [Lust] was once again doing nothing to invigorate his warrior spirit.
But it was an occurrence he simply had to accept.
It wasn’t like he needed it.
Sure, it dulled pain and boosted his lust for battle, but he didn’t care to have either of those at the moment. All he needed at the moment was to see this bastard’s body severed and on the ground.
Preferably without having to use [Embrace] and its ghastly execution method.
Thankfully, Dominion, being SSR, should rend through its scales with ease.
To that end…
Vale picked up his blade, reinforcing his ankles with [Intermediate Shapeshifter] and Aether, then leapt at the beast, who was a whole head taller than him — even though Vale had reverted his body to its original large form.
Crossing its fiery tridents, the beast roared again as it received Vale’s blow.
“Skkkreeeak!”
[Dominion] smashed into the intersecting shafts, but they held. Yet, Vale kept pushing through with his strike, slowly forcing the blade down and down, toward its scaly face.
And, even when it pushed back, using all of its force, knocking Vale’s blade away, or even pushing it back, was simply impossible.
The green dragonkin engaged all of its muscles, its scales glistening as it fell to one knee.
Just when Vale’s blade reached the tip of its snout, the dragonkin opened its grimy maw with a gurgling sound, revealing a splendorous blaze deep in its gullet.
