Chapter 313: Irrlicht
Chapter 313: Irrlicht
Ducking, Vale let the fire stream shoot out over his head.
‘Shit.’
Then the dragonkin flicked its head down, following Vale’s movements. The Master of Lust skillfully somersaulted away like a seasoned gymnast.
After escaping the relatively short range of its breath, Vale sighed and said:
“You know… it’s never made sense to me. In mythology, dragons are reptilian. Reptilians are cold-blooded. Yet you produce fire from within your body… Where’s the logic in that? Shouldn’t you be overheating?”
Then again… why was he trying to classify this thing under mortal constraints?
Vale’s ramble came to an abrupt end when one of the fire tridents sailed over his shoulder.
‘I get I can be annoying, but sheesh.’
Chuckling, Vale took a stance again.
Judging from what he could sense, the bastard appeared to be only a Mutant or Monster. Nothing he should have any trouble dealing with.
His main concern was avoiding injuries and avoiding wasting strength.
The dragonkin shut its mouth after the fire petered out, then growled at Vale.
“Alright…”
Vale raised his sword.
As much as he liked a good fight, and this dragonkin seemed a worthy opponent, it needed to die in a concise manner. There was no reason to draw out this fight.
As the green reptilian summoned another trident, steadied its stance, and tucked back its wings, Vale began to leisurely approach.
Stopping only when he entered the edge of the dragonkin’s flame breath range.
‘Now, now… what will you do?’
Its vertical slit pupils narrowed, but it held its ground.
“Tch. No fun.”
Vale had noticed that breathing fire blocked the thing’s vision. He was going to take advantage and execute it after baiting it into using it again.
‘No matter…’
Vale was still overwhelmingly stronger.
Kicking off the floor with his back foot, Vale closed the distance in an instant and locked their weapons once again.
But this time, Vale didn’t dare relent.
The moment its maw stretched even a bit, Vale motioned as if changing his attack instead of retreating, prompting the beast to snap its trap shut.
The scene repeated a few times as Vale’s blade inched closer.
As its knees began to buckle, the dragonkin opened wide.
“Skkkreeeak!”
‘Not falling for it.’
It was bright as all hell last time, and there was a slight gurgle when the dragonkin was casting it.
Seeing that its bluff failed, the dragonkin began to invoke its ability for real.
Vale waited… and waited, staring at the embers building within its throat.
The moment the fire conflagrated unnaturally, Vale stepped to the side, flipping his grip on the blade as he spun.
With his back to the beast as it was unable to adjust its form, Vale placed two hands on the pommel and pulled as hard as he could.
The blade pierced the thick scales.
The dragonkin’s spitting flame died out with a scream.
“Skreak!”
It unsummoned its one trident and focused its power on using the other one, but Vale was too quick.
Spinning back to face the dragonkin, he swung his blade to counter its strike.
As the flame trident veered to Vale’s side, Vale transitioned the attack into a cross swipe that smashed into the green scales, yet failed to meaningfully pierce.
But at this close a distance, the dragonkin had no hope of defending against Vale’s follow-up.
Pulling his swipe to a halt, Vale thrust [Dominion] forward, deep into the green bastard’s chest.
He didn’t know what exactly [Dominion] pierced, but a moment later, the dragonkin fell to its knees and began coughing up blood, its fire trident disappearing into the windless air.
Heaving a sigh, Vale pulled his blade from its tough skin and stepped away, watching it struggle to breathe as it wobbled and began to fall over.
Instead of finishing it off, Vale took this time to observe the rest of its forces…
There seemed to be two more dragonkin who might have been highly ranked. And there was also a spider-human hybrid who looked terrifying with eight red eyes and nasty mandibles poking out of its cheeks.
‘Wait…’
It was as Vale studied the force that he discovered a new, terrifyingly useful aspect of [World Without Witness].
He’d known it didn’t necessarily have to be used in battle, having already used it for private conversations three times, but could he use it to scout?! Cast it on Salome and then leisurely walk over and see what was up.
But…
‘If this world is created by my mind, wouldn’t it possess only things my mind has processed?’
Maybe… but it was worth a test seeing as the creatures before him seemed complete. But perhaps it was his mind completing their forms. Who knew?
And what about the [Eclipse]? It was within his world, but retained its pitch black veil. If he entered would he find Awilix and the bats? Or would it be empty?
Testing that facet of his ability would have to come at a later time, for this battle had already started.
Vale drew his eyes, studying a few more of the enemy forces. Finally, he looked back at the dragonkin commander stubbornly clinging to life.
Like the very merciful man Vale was, he stepped forward and neatly ended its suffering.
‘Here it comes.’
As its croaks died out and its body slumped, Vale steeled himself, trying to study possible gaps where he could dodge.
‘I should have taken Absolution as well…’
But he’d let Stacy, who was with the distraction forces, keep it. He hadn’t been expecting to join the fray himself, after all.
A moment later, Vale heard the chitters and screams of his foes. Then his eyes adjusted and he was back where he was.
Vale said:
“It’s done.”
Then he dove to the side as a euphoric sensation coursed through his being.
[You have slain Emergent Mutant Drakthar, Champion of Irrlicht]
‘So, finally know their name.’
The one Vale suspected to be the, or a, leader of his biggest fan club.
All of the projectiles missed pitifully, having their trajectories already deciphered.
A moment later, Salome, who’d jumped up to dodge, kicked off the roof of the octagon and descended toward the group much like Ximena had moments before.
