Chapter 625: Please Don’t Make A Scene
Chapter 625: Please Don’t Make A Scene
"Wow... this place is better than I thought," Renard said as he looked down at the city of Emberholt from the deck of the airship.
"Of course it is," Chuck said proudly. "It’s my city!"
"You mean your father’s city," Alex corrected.
"My father’s city is my city," Chuck insisted. "I was born and raised here."
Well, if the young man put it that way, Alex and Renard could not counter it.
But the view wasn’t the first surprise of this trip.
The airship they were on wasn’t a public airship. It was Princess Xenia’s airship.
Who knew how it happened? Alex and Renard had gone to the meeting place, ready to leave the academy and book airship tickets. To their surprise, they found Chuck tied to a pole like a pig about to be roasted over fire, carried by two of Princess Xenia’s guards.
Renard even looked amused and suggested that the guards add more rope because the troublemaker was a slippery eel.
In the end, Mary explained that Chuck had bragged about taking his friends to his father’s duchy for some sightseeing. Of course, he had done it in the common room of the dormitory.
Naturally, Mary heard this and reported it to Princess Xenia.
Princess Xenia then contacted her Godfather. By morning the next day, the airship and her escorts were all ready to go to the Duchy of Emberholt.
Alex and Renard had no complaints. Only an idiot would say no to a free ride. The only problem was how they would handle the dungeon expedition.
Since Princess Xenia and Mary had decided to join them, that meant the princess’ escorts would follow suit.
Alex and Renard wanted to take this chance to train, gain experience, and challenge themselves. Of course, they also planned to make money. They could easily sell monster drops for gold in the Adventurer’s Guild.
After a private discussion, they quickly came to an agreement: They would ditch Chuck and let him distract Princess Xenia and Mary.
They didn’t want the guards anywhere near them during the expedition since that would ruin their plans completely.
However, they did agree to accompany Chuck back to his family’s residence to meet his mother.
From what Alex could recall, his roommate’s mother was ill and needed medicine made of rare ingredients.
Despite Princess Xenia doing her best to find them, she still couldn’t procure everything needed. However, giving up was not an option. It was her duty as a princess to uphold the promise she had made.
"You should feel lucky. Her Highness has taken some time out of her busy schedule to accompany you back to your home, Chuck," Mary pointed out.
"... I know." Chuck frowned. "I am grateful. But was it really necessary to tie me up?"
"Well, we had to make sure you wouldn’t run away," Mary replied. "How’s your relationship with your father? Is it still bad?"
"Mmm." Charles neither denied nor confirmed Mary’s suspicion. Since this was a sensitive topic, the maid decided to take a step back and stopped talking.
When the airship landed in the Duke’s private airport, several knights were already waiting for them.
"Welcome, Your Highness," the Captain of the Knights greeted the princess. "I am Sir Kraven of the Ember Knights. The Duke has asked us to receive you and your entourage."
"Thank you, Sir Kraven," Princess Xenia replied. "I have come here to meet my parents-in-law. Is my mother-in-law feeling better?"
"The lady is the same as always," Kraven answered. "But I’m sure she will be greatly cheered up by Her Highness’s visit."
The Knight Captain then gave Chuck a side-long glance before turning around. Clearly, he was not that important in Kraven’s eyes.
This didn’t escape Princess Xenia’s notice, but she made no move to do anything.
According to common etiquette, they should’ve informed the Duke of their visit a few days in advance. And yet, they had come here in a hurry. This treatment already showed them enough hospitality.
She was the princess of the kingdom, but that didn’t mean all the nobles must be at her beck and call.
Not to mention, Duke Marius was one of the pillars of the Kingdom. Even with her status, she had to be respectful in his presence.
"Looks like your own knights dislike you," Renard said loud enough for all the knights, including Kraven, to hear. "Just the sight of you is enough for them to forget about professionalism."
Chuck lowered his gaze. He was already used to this kind of treatment.
However, while everyone thought of this as the norm, someone spoke up.
"Hey, you, Mr. Knight Captain!" Alex shouted. "Why are you not greeting your Lord’s son? Is this part of your so-called chivalry? Is your position high enough that you can ignore the bloodline of the person who pays you your salary?"
Kraven turned around and locked his gaze with Alex.
"Are you talking to me?" Kraven asked.
"If you’re not the Knight Captain, then I’m not talking to you," Alex answered. "I haven’t met a Knight who doesn’t even recognize Her Highness’ fiance. Besides, he is the son of the Duke you serve. Are you perhaps a substitute captain? Even if you’re new, shouldn’t you recognize everyone who outranks you? Who trained you? I will file a complaint."
"Dim Dim!" Dim Dim also pointed its little stubby hand at the Knight Captain, disliking the way he looked at Chuck.
Although the young man was a troublemaker, that troublemaker was Dim Dim’s friend!
"Please don’t make a scene," Chuck murmured, tugging on Alex’s clothes. "It’s fine. I’m already used to it."
"Make a scene?" Alex blinked. "Right! We have that option!"
Before Chuck could even understand what his friend meant by that, Alex took out a megaphone, cranked the knob to its highest setting, and shouted.
"Hey! Why is the Captain of the Ember Knights slighting the Duke’s bloodline?" Alex shouted, nearly deafening everyone unlucky enough to be in the private airport.
"Listen, everyone! Guess what Sir Kraven of the Ember Knights just said? He said he pays the Duke to call him sir! The gall! Who hired this man? Where does he get the courage to call the Duke his servant?!"
Alex had underestimated the power of the megaphone.
The output was so loud that his voice was broadcasted to half of the city, even reaching the ears of the Duke himself!
"Y-You bastard!" Kraven shouted. "I never said such a thing!"
"Wow! Did Sir Kraven of the Ember Knights just call the Duke a bastard?!" Alex continued. "Despicable! Isn’t this against the law? Knights! Arrest this man who claims to be the Captain of the Ember Knights! If you don’t, you will be considered his accomplices and shall be punished alongside him!"
Xenia was the most highly ranked person here, but she wasn’t the reason Alex dared to stir up trouble.
His courage came from the Guardian of the North, Luthor, who had decided to accompany him on this trip.
With a Rank 8 Prism Knight guarding him, he could cause trouble as much as he wanted!
Of course, Princess Xenia didn’t know this, so she hurriedly tried to take Alex’s megaphone away from him before things got any worse.
Somewhere in the residence of the Duke, a woman lying on the bed smiled faintly.
"I see you’ve made a good friend in the academy, Chuck," the woman said softly before coughing uncontrollably.
She was none other than Chuck’s mother, Lady Dorothy. Her lips were upturned, happy that her son would visit her soon.
