Chapter 628: The Lady In The Villa [Part 2]
Chapter 628: The Lady In The Villa [Part 2]
When Lady Dorothy said she wanted to know what academy life had been like for Chuck, Alex grinned deviously for exactly half a second. There was no better opportunity to exact the perfect petty revenge.
"Chuck is an amazing friend and student in the academy," Alex said, smiling politely.
The troublemaker was grateful for his roommate’s support, but why was a chill going up his spine?
"But," Alex continued, "he can be too excited occasionally. For example, just the other day, he accidentally blew up an alchemy pot when we were making a potion made from Mandragora leaves. According to him, he’s ’too good looking and too hot’ that things either melt or blow up around him."
Chuck’s head snapped to the side and he shot Alex a death glare that barely disguised the panic he felt. Unfortunately, the Blackmail King had no intention of stopping!
"During training sparring sessions, Chuck only challenges the weaker students and rejects anyone stronger than him!"
"Th-h-h-hat is just being smart!" the troublemaker protested.
"He also doesn’t like eating vegetables, especially if they are green. He says vegetables are food for his food!"
"Oh, my!" Lady Dorothy’s hand flew to her chest.
"I also hear say some suspicious things in his sleep. Once, I heard him say, ’Who’s your daddy now huh? Where did that earlier bravado of yours go, Mary?’ What’s wor— Oh, oops!"
Alex almost spilled everything but had to stop when he felt a cold killing intent coming from the maid standing behind the princess.
"W-What do you think you’re telling my mom?!" Chuck complained. "Mom! Everything he said is hogwash! They’re not tru— M-Mary! Why are you looking at me like that?!"
Instead of being shocked, offended, or dumbfounded, Lady Dorothy giggled after seeing her panicking son.
In Chuck’s letters, he only mentioned that he was doing fine and that he had made a lot of friends in the academy. She worried that he wasn’t telling her the truth because he didn’t want to worry her. Although he never voiced any complaint, she feared that academy life had been hard on him.
Alex’s revelations put those fears to rest. He had correctly guessed that Lady Dorothy would embrace everything about her son, good or bad. She would just love to hear more about her son’s life.
Frankly, she felt guilty. She should’ve been taking care of him, but here she was, forced to stay in bed due to her frail health.
"You’ve made good friends, Chuck," Lady Dorothy said after she finished laughing. "I’m glad to hear you’re enjoying yourself in the academy."
"Mom..." Chuck couldn’t help but blush.
The persona he had crafted for his mother was a cool, perfect son. He simply didn’t want her to worry about him so she could focus on getting better. He was embarrassed that his image was collapsing, but he also felt strangely relieved.
Dim Dim jumped on the bed and moved closer to the older lady, who smiled as she scooped up the little bun.
"You’re such a cute little one," Lady Dorothy said before kissing Dim Dim’s cheek, making the latter smile brightly. "Your name is Dim Dim, right? I’ve heard many things about you from Chuck’s letters."
"Dim Dim~" Dim Dim swayed from side to side, feeling happy that Chuck had mentioned it to his mother.
Suddenly, Lady Dorothy started coughing incessantly, making Chuck panic.
"I-I’m okay," Lady Dorothy said after her coughing fit ended. "It’s just the usual. Nothing to be worried about."
Chuck reached out for his mother’s hand with downcast eyes.
From what Alex knew, Lady Dorothy was suffering from the Withering Disease. It was a disease that drained the life force of its unlucky victims.
Lady Dorothy was only forty years old, yet she looked like someone in her sixties. Even so, her beauty still stood out.
Chuck was desperate to find the cure for his mother. If her situation didn’t improve, she might truly "wither" away in three years.
"I’m sorry. I ruined the mood," Lady Dorothy apologized. "I’m glad you’re back, Chuck. But I’m sure Marius has prepared a feast for you and Her Highness. You shouldn’t keep your father waiting."
"But mother..."
"Don’t worry about me. The servants take care of me well. Everything’s fine."
As if on cue, Niles chose that moment to knock on the door.
"Young Master, His Grace asked for you, Her Highness, and your friends to join him for lunch," Niles said.
"Understood," Chuck replied. "We’ll be there soon. Thank you, Niles."
The young man glanced at his mother one more time, and the lady gave him a smile.
"Go," Lady Dorothy said softly. "I’ll still be here when you return later. I want to hear more of your stories from your friends."
"Okay." Chuck nodded. "I’ll be back soon."
"Mmm." Lady Dorothy smiled.
One by one, the visitors left. Dim Dim, however, remained on Lady Dorothy’s lap.
"Aren’t you going with them, little one?" Lady Dorothy asked.
Dim Dim took out something from the small portal that appeared by its side and presented it to Chuck’s mother.
"A gift for me?" Lady Dorothy asked, surprised and delighted.
"Dim Dim~" Dim Dim smiled.
"Thank you, Dim Dim. But am I supposed to eat this?" Lady Dorothy accepted the golden pill the size of a small candy.
"Dim!" Dim Dim even opened its mouth and pointed inside.
The lady giggled. "You won’t leave until you see me eat it?"
"Dim!"
"Oh my... I didn’t know you’re so assertive, little guy."
Lady Dorothy could feel some kind of kinship with Dim Dim she couldn’t explain. She just knew the little bun wouldn’t harm her.
Still, she was a little reluctant to eat a pill she didn’t recognise.
"Dim Dim?" The Dim Sum God looked up at her with puppy eyes. It looked so endearing that the lady found herself unable to refuse.
"Okay, I’ll eat it." Lady Dorothy finally ate the golden pill.
The pill melted in her mouth, tasting as sweet as honey.
Suddenly, she felt a wave of warmth wash over her body, making her feel drowsy.
Dim Dim told her to rest. Since she was already feeling sleepy, she decided to do just that.
The little bun pulled the covers over Lady Dorothy, tucking her in bed.
It then pointed at the space above the bed, creating a small ice snowflake that slightly cooled the room, making it the perfect temperature to sleep.
After making sure that Chuck’s mother was sleeping comfortably, the little bun finally left the room and caught up with its friends.
Slowly but surely, Lady Dorothy’s face regained its colors. The disease that had been plaguing her for many years slowly disappeared from her body.
Perhaps, Dim Dim had taken pity on her or perhaps it didn’t want Chuck to get heartbroken in the future.
Regardless of its reasons, only one thing was true. Once Lady Dorothy woke up, her life would finally change for the better.
