Chapter 788: No Matter How Strong The Enemy, I’ll Make Sure To Protect You
Half a day before Reverse Vaan completed his mission…
Chuck and Lapiz were looking at the blueprint that Nessia left for them.
“We have already completed the runic formations needed to reinforce the north, west, and east parts of the city,” Chuck said. “Only the south part remains.”
“Don’t worry. We will make it in time,” Lapiz replied. “Sister, Lavinia, Sir Cairo, and Elaine are there to help speed things up.”
Chuck nodded. “I know.”
He had spent most of his time crafting the runic talismans that had been delivered to the defensive positions in the city.
As much as he didn’t want to admit it, he was already nearing his limit. He had been working nearly non-stop for the past few days without getting much sleep.
That was how important this mission was, and Chuck understood that this was a matter of life and death for all of them.
Scattered on the floor were the dozens of mana and stamina potions he had drunk to finish the mission that Alex had given to him.
“No matter what happens, Everdawn City mustn’t fall.”
That was the mission that he and the others, who had been left behind, had been working hard to accomplish.
Even Eleanora, who was completely under the influence of the Synchronization Rate, had also helped her “husband” and completed hundreds of runic talismans with him.
She was currently resting in her room after Chuck deemed that she could no longer continue.
After all, he didn’t want to see her collapse from exhaustion, taking over her duties without hesitation.
Fortunately, Aeris and Lapiz also had significant magical powers.
This was especially true for Aeris, who had also personally gone to the defensive walls of the city to supervise the placement of the runic talismans.
Chuck inspected the blueprint once more, marking the places that still needed the remaining runic talismans before letting out a tired sigh.
There was still a lot of work left to do.
Even with the combined efforts of everyone in Everdawn City, they were in a race against time.
The enemy could arrive at any moment, yet none of them knew exactly how powerful the forces coming from Reverse Arcana would be.
No. They actually knew how powerful they were.
Though what they didn’t know was how many of these powerful individuals would cross over to their world.
Chuck pinched the bridge of his nose to fight the dizziness that was starting to take hold of him. “Lapiz, how many more talismans do we need?”
“According to the blueprint…” Lapiz glanced at the notes that Nessia left behind. “At least three hundred more. However, if we want to reinforce the southern defensive line properly, we should make another hundred as backup.”
Chuck grimaced in response. They still needed to make four hundred talismans, yet he already felt like puking.
He then stared at the empty potion bottles scattered around him before clenching his fists in determination.
“Then let’s make four hundred,” Chuck declared with determination.
Lapiz was also reaching her limit, but she understood that they couldn’t stop now.
She knew that somewhere out there, Alex was doing his best to save Charles, who might become the key to winning this battle.
Since he was doing his best, Lapiz planned to do her best as well.
Suddenly, the door opened, and Astrea entered the room.
“Chuck, you look like a zombie,” Astrea said in a teasing tone. “Lapiz is also not looking good.”
Astrea had also helped them make the runic talismans, having just returned from the eastern walls of the city.
She personally supervised the placement of the talismans, making sure that none of them were put in the wrong place.
“Tell me about it.” Chuck sighed at her words. “I feel like dying.”
“How many talismans are still needed?” Astrea asked, feeling sorry for Chuck, who was the commander of this operation.
“Four hundred,” Lapiz answered.
“Understood.” Astrea nodded. “Both of you, rest for an hour. Leave the talisman making to me.”
Since Nessia’s guide for making runic talismans was clear, precise, and extremely detailed, no one in the club had an issue making them. Although it wasn’t easy, the product was usable.
The majority of the skilled mages in the city had accompanied Alex on his campaign to the south.
As for the few dozen that remained in Everdawn City, they were stationed along the walls protecting the city and were on standby.
Chuck had ordered them to preserve their magical strength. That way, if the invaders were to attack them, they would have the strength to activate and keep the defensive formation active until Alex and his army returned.
“No, we will make them with you,” Chuck replied.
“No, you won’t,” Astrea insisted. “Both of you drink the potions and rest for half an hour. If you push yourselves now, you will just collapse from exhaustion. The potions might have recovered your physical and magical exhaustion, but the mental fatigue is still there. I don’t want anyone here falling unconscious while Alex is still away.”
Chuck and Lapiz exchanged a glance before reluctantly nodding in agreement.
Soon, both took the potions that Astrea handed to them and lay down on the couches that had been prepared in the meeting room.
Although Astrea said that they should only take a nap for half an hour, she intended to let them rest for an entire hour.
Half an hour would not be enough for her two friends to recover, so she decided to just work hard to cover their share.
Now that Astrea had recovered her memories and unlocked the power that remained dormant inside her body, she could handle the load of having her mana drained while crafting the runic talismans.
A dragon had vast stores of magical energy, so it wouldn’t be an exaggeration to say that she alone could make the four hundred remaining talismans.
Of course, it wouldn’t be easy. However, she had decided to see it through until the end.
To be honest, this was the first time she was doing something like this with other people. She wasn’t really a team player.
During special exams in the academy that required teams, she would always be invited by the students who had a close relationship with her family.
They were fine with her not doing anything, as they were strong enough to pass the exams even without her help.
Astrea didn’t want to admit it, but she was having fun despite the fact that they were in a dire situation.
‘Will Alex praise me if I do well?’ Astrea thought. ‘I hope he does.’
After being embraced by the young man, Astrea had become more conscious of him. Then again, she had already started to like him in the past.
Though the moment she tasted the forbidden fruit, her draconic urges seemed to have awakened as well.
It also didn’t help the fact that Alex was her first man.
Dragons were loyal creatures. They usually only had one mate their entire life.
So, right now, she, who had awakened her powers, wished to use them to protect her mate.
‘Don’t worry, Alex,’ Astrea thought. ‘No matter how strong the enemy, I’ll make sure to protect you.’
With these thoughts swirling inside her head, she began crafting the runic talismans while Chuck and Lapiz rested.
With that, the room remained quiet except for the faint scratching of her quill as each completed talisman was placed carefully on the table.
Astrea continued working without stopping, her eyes occasionally glancing toward the sleeping Chuck and Lapiz to make sure that they were still resting peacefully.
She wasn’t aware that high above the skies of Everdawn City, two people hovered above the clouds.
“Are you sure we are in the right place?” A young man with short black hair and green eyes asked the beautiful lady by his side.
“Yes,” the beautiful lady with the same hair color as him replied as her golden eyes scanned the surroundings. “This is the place. I am sure of it.”
The young man then looked down at the city, his green eyes glowing as if he was trying to find something.
A moment later, his gaze softened. At last, he found the person he was looking for.
He and his wife had crossed over to this world in order to find someone special. And now that he had found her, he was at a loss for what to do next.
