Chapter 791: The Last Night Of Peace [Part 1]
Chapter 791: The Last Night Of Peace [Part 1]
The group worked throughout the night, barely taking breaks.
With four people focused on creating runic talismans, the workload felt lighter.
Talismans were completed one after another, every single one carefully placed on the table.
Chuck and Lapiz continued drawing runes without complaint, with Aeris and Astrea taking over some of their workload whenever either of the two showed signs of exhaustion.
Even Elaris stood nearby, ensuring the food and potions were well-stocked to keep them going.
Time continued to pass.
Soon, the number of remaining talismans dropped from hundreds to dozens.
Until finally… the last talisman was completed.
Chuck made sure to count the number of talismans on the table just to make sure they didn’t miss a single one.
The recount confirmed there were exactly four hundred, but Chuck still went through them again to double-check if he had counted correctly.
After double and triple-checking, he finally breathed out a sigh of relief. At that, Lapiz looked at the vice commander of this operation. Seeing the relief on his face, she, too, felt the tension finally leave her body.
“Congratulations, everyone,” Chuck said, his voice tinged with exhaustion. And yet, there was a note of relief within the depths of his eyes. “We finally did it.”
“Finally…” Lapiz muttered before resting her head on the table. She had truly pushed herself to the limit, enduring the mild headache that had come knocking an hour before they completed the last talisman.
Chuck carefully placed the talismans on the table before he, too, rested his head on the table.
“Hah… I want a vacation,” Chuck groaned. “A long one. Something that doesn’t require us to risk our lives like this.”
“Count me in,” Lapiz commented. “Maybe on a beach with only Alex and me…”
She said the last part in a very low voice, to the point that almost no one heard her statement. However, Aeris had very sensitive ears, so she heard her sister’s plan to spend a vacation with Alex on the beach with just the two of them.
For the time being, she chose to ignore her sister’s words, looking at the two slumped individuals with pity.
“You two look like you’ve just survived a war,” Aeris stated.
“Does this not count as war?” Chuck replied weakly.
Lapiz was too tired to reply, so she just closed her eyes to ease the pain inside her head.
Aeris smiled faintly in response.
Truth be told, she also felt exhausted. However, she had long learned to keep calm even in the face of danger, setting an example to those who relied on her.
Although everyone was exhausted, the important thing was that they had completed their task.
Aeris then gathered the finished talismans. “We still have one last thing to do.”
Chuck slowly lifted his head. “What?”
“We need to place them along the southern defensive formation.” Aeris reminded Chuck that while the talismans were completed, they would still need to be added to the defensive formation for them to work.
Hearing that, Chuck groaned in despair. “I suddenly feel exhausted again.”
“Don’t worry.” Aeris patted Chuck’s shoulder. “I’ll take care of it.”
After collecting all the talismans, she left the room and headed to the southern gate of the city.
The moment she stepped out of the castle, the beautiful elf immediately felt the chill of the night. She was so exhausted that the temptation of sleep was starting to get to her.
But she steeled her willpower, reminding herself that she must not sleep. At least not until she finished her final mission.
With that, she rode a hippogriff and flew toward her destination.
The defensive formations surrounding the capital had already been reinforced in the north, east, and west gates.
Only the southern defensive line remained incomplete.
Fortunately, the preparations had already been made.
All that remained was to place the final talismans in their designated positions.
Soon, Aeris landed near the southern defensive wall and immediately began working.
She carefully placed the talismans according to the blueprint that Nessia had left behind.
The process took some time.
After all, Aeris had to make sure that there was not a single mistake, for everyone had worked hard to make this happen.
Once the final talisman was placed, she stepped backward and looked at the completed defensive formation.
A moment later, a faint glow spread across the southern wall.
Then, one by one, the runes throughout the defensive formation began lighting up.
The formations covering the entire city then resonated with one another.
North.
South.
East.
Then West.
At that moment, all four defensive lines had finally been completed. A dome made of light materialized, shielding the city from anything that would try to destroy it.
This shield of light glowed for half a minute before disappearing from the naked eye. Still, Aeris knew that even though she couldn’t see it, it was there to protect all of them.
The young lady then looked toward the sky.
The stars were still shining brightly above Everdawn City.
Yet, despite the peaceful scenery, Aeris couldn’t relax.
After all, she knew that the enemy could arrive at any moment.
The people from Reverse Arcana had already crossed over into their world.
Based on the stories of her sister and the rest of Alex’s club members, those from Reverse Arcana were incredibly strong people.
She wondered if her own counterpart would appear, and wondered what Reverse Aeris would be like.
Suddenly, she heard footsteps approaching her from behind.
When she turned around, she saw a familiar girl whom Lavinia, Cairo, and Elaine had introduced to her earlier.
She was none other than Efa.
“All done?” Efa asked with a smile.
Aeris nodded. “Yes. The southern defensive line has been completed. The defensive formation is now working properly.”
“Good.” Efa also saw the activation of the shield, but since she didn’t understand how it worked, she still asked Aeris for confirmation.
Noticing how exhausted the beautiful elf looked, Efa decided to tell her to take a rest.
“You should rest now, Aeris.”
“Rest?”
Efa nodded. “Yes.”
“But the enemy could arrive at any moment,” Aeris replied.
“Exactly. So rest while you can,” Efa stated. “We will need everyone’s strength to face them. Do you think you can defend the city in your current state?”
Aeris knew that the answer to this question was no.
At the moment, she was physically, mentally, and emotionally drained.
If their enemy were to arrive now, the only thing she would be able to do was watch as they tried to break the defensive barrier that they all worked hard to create.
