Chapter 1270 Capital
Chapter 1270: Chapter 1270 Capital
Servant Lin was confused, but no matter how puzzled he felt, he would never do something as foolish as questioning his master, Ross Oakley.
The more he learned about the young man, the more terrified he became.
Every day seemed to reveal another shocking secret, another impossible feat that shattered his understanding of the world.
At first, he had thought Ross was merely an exceptionally talented cultivator.
Later, he realized that description was laughably inadequate.
Ross was a monster that defied all common sense.
As those thoughts flashed through his mind, Servant Lin looked around at the crowd gathered in Falling Leaf Town.
What he saw surprised him.
The soldiers were dead. The tyrannical king’s forces had been completely wiped out.
Logically, the townspeople should have been celebrating.
They should have been cheering, crying tears of joy, and thanking the heavens for their newfound freedom.
Yet not a single smile could be seen.
Every face was pale.
Every pair of eyes was filled with fear.
No one dared to speak.
“…”
The silence was deafening.
It hung heavily over the entire town like a dark cloud.
Suddenly, a middle-aged man stepped forward. His face was twisted with panic and despair.
“What did you do?!” he shouted.
His voice broke the silence.
“You’ve sent us to our graves!”
The crowd immediately erupted into chaos.
“It’s over!”
“The king will never forgive this!”
“We’re all dead!”
“He’ll slaughter every man, woman, and child in this town!”
Fear spread faster than wildfire.
Many people did not even wait to hear anything else.
They turned and sprinted toward their homes as fast as they could.
Some tripped over themselves in their panic.
Others dragged their family members along while screaming for them to hurry.
Within minutes, the peaceful streets of Falling Leaf Town became a scene of complete disorder.
Doors slammed open.
People rushed inside their homes and began stuffing valuables into bags.
Gold, silver, food, clothing, family heirlooms… anything they could carry was taken.
Mothers grabbed their children.
Husbands pulled their wives along.
The elderly were supported by younger relatives as entire families fled toward the town gates.
To an outsider, it would look as though a natural disaster was about to strike.
The reason was simple.
Everyone knew the king’s temperament.
The soldiers Brandon had killed were not ordinary men. They were the king’s personal forces.
If the king discovered what had happened, he would never let the matter rest.
In their minds, the outcome was already decided.
The king would return with a massive army.
He would burn Falling Leaf Town to the ground.
He would execute everyone connected to the incident.
Whether they were innocent or guilty would not matter.
By sunset, nearly every resident was preparing to abandon the town they had lived in for their entire lives.
Meanwhile, someone merely scratched his head in confusion.
“Why are they running away?” he asked.
Servant Lin could only smile bitterly.
To Brandon and Ross Oakley, the king was nothing more than an insignificant ant.
To the people of Falling Leaf Town, however, he was a terrifying ruler whose wrath could destroy their lives with a single command.
An hour later, Falling Leaf Town felt like a ghost town.
A massive exodus had taken place.
The streets that were once filled with merchants, travelers, and townsfolk were now eerily quiet. Doors and windows were shut tight, and countless homes had been abandoned in haste.
Of the several thousand residents who had once lived there, only a few hundred remained.
Most of those who stayed behind were elderly men and women who were simply too old and frail to travel.
Others saw no point in fleeing.
They knew King Ji Canghai’s ruthless reputation all too well and fully believed that he would hunt down every last resident of Falling Leaf Town regardless of where they ran.
To them, escape was merely delaying the inevitable.
Including Ross Oakley’s group of over two thousand five hundred people, along with the remaining townsfolk, there were only around twenty-seven hundred people left in the entire town.
The atmosphere was heavy.
Everywhere Ross and his companions went, they could feel gazes following them.
Those gazes were filled with fear.
They were also filled with resentment.
In the eyes of the remaining townsfolk, Ross Oakley and his people were the reason disaster had befallen Falling Leaf Town.
Had they never arrived, the king’s soldiers would still be alive, and the town would not be facing extinction.
Yet despite their anger, no one dared voice their complaints openly.
The memory of Brandon effortlessly slaughtering the king’s men was still fresh in their minds.

Several days passed.
Then the people everyone feared finally arrived.
Three figures appeared outside Falling Leaf Town.
They wore dark robes embroidered with the royal insignia.
Their expressions were stern, and powerful auras radiated from their bodies.
It was immediately obvious that they were not ordinary cultivators.
The town stood wide open, allowing them to enter without obstruction.
As soon as the elderly residents saw the newcomers, their faces turned pale.
Some trembled uncontrollably.
Others lowered their heads, not daring to meet their eyes.
The three men calmly walked through the nearly deserted streets.
The empty city around them only deepened their frowns.
Eventually, one of them stopped before an old man sitting beside a rundown house.
The old man’s body visibly shook.
The leader stared at him coldly.
“Where are the king’s men?” he asked.
The old man’s lips trembled.
For a moment, he seemed unable to speak.
“They’re… they’re dead…” he finally stammered.
The three investigators narrowed their eyes.
“Dead?” the leader repeated.
“Y-yes.”
“Who killed them?”
The old man swallowed hard.
“It was a newcomer named Ross Oakley. Well… not exactly him. One of his followers did it. I don’t know the man’s name.”
The moment those words left his mouth, a chilling silence descended upon the street.
The expressions of the three investigators immediately darkened.
A terrifying pressure slowly began to spread from their bodies.
“Someone dared to kill the king’s soldiers?” one of them muttered.
The old man nearly collapsed from fear.
Meanwhile, far away in a courtyard, Ross Oakley slowly opened his eyes.
A faint smile appeared on his face.
“It seems the king has finally sent someone to investigate.”
