Chapter 630: Future Selection
Chapter 630: Future Selection
As Liora’s field of vision shifted, with her phantom jumping into another dimension before materializing beside the flowing river, scenes emerged in her mind.
Of the past. The present. The future.
Every time Liora’s gaze landed on one of the illusory river’s droplets, the corresponding scene would surface.
Under normal circumstances, she might have been eager to observe them, tracing back onto the Cosmic Sea’s history in an attempt to further comprehend the power of time.
But now, Liora understood she did not have the time.
Her gaze swept across the river, as though she were searching for something.
Mere moments later, her eyes brightened.
On the opposite side of the river from where she stood, a tiny droplet could be seen flowing away together with the rest of the illusory waves.
It looked exactly like those surrounding it, with nothing noteworthy or special about it.
Yet the familiar aura within it immediately told Liora that she had found what she was searching for.
Sure enough, as she focused on it, there appeared not a single scene as before, but thousands of them.
All shared the same characteristic.
A brown-haired woman sat alone in a vast world, her aura fluctuating wildly as though she were about to advance to the next level.
Yet beside that commonality, everything else was different.
The timelines diverged from that point.
In some, the woman’s advancement resulted in a failure, and she suffered backlash, collapsing to the ground and falling unconscious.
In others, a second will was born within her, rapidly altering her personality.
There were even some where the woman outright exploded, her flesh and blood scattering in every direction.
Liora couldn’t help but feel strange upon witnessing these outcomes.
She had personally participated in countless slaughters, having killed many beings in the most gruesome ways possible.
Even she herself had suffered greatly, at times turning into a sea of blood or a single remaining body part.
But the scene before her was different from everything she had seen in the past.
It was the first time she had watched a person close to her suffer like this.
Furthermore, as she investigated further, she discovered that the result of all the images was the same:
Alpha either perished, lost herself, or fell unconscious forever.
The more futures she examined, the more every timeline converged on the same conclusion.
Alpha’s fate appeared to be sealed.
Of course, Liora did not believe in illusory things like destiny.
Fate could at most bind weak beings. For someone truly powerful, destiny was nothing else than a simple toy they could manipulate according to their will, just as Ancient Devils could with time.
With that thought, she neither panicked nor despaired.
She carefully went through the futures.
One. Ten. One hundred.
Within a split second, thousands of them had been observed.
Among them, Liora had seen the light at the end of the tunnel.
In those, Liora herself had actually taken action to suppress Alpha’s advancement and scatter the Mechanical Law.
As expected, although the side-effects were serious, they were at least far better than Alpha simply dying.
Liora only briefly paused on them, mentally noting them down. Then, her gaze moved onto the rest of the pictures.
Time beside the River of Time flowed differently from that of the Cosmic Sea. Although Liora had spent hours watching “mini-movies”, not much time had passed in reality.
Less than a split second.
Alpha’s advancement was still underway, and she was still locked in the bitter struggle against the ancient will.
Meanwhile, Liora continued.
Her strange routine seemed unending.
Yet just as it seemed that this would last forever, her eyes suddenly lit up.
Her gaze focused on a particular timeline.
There, Alpha’s advancement had the opposite result from the rest of them.
Rather than succumbing to the will’s power, not offering any resistance throughout the process, she suddenly burst out with an astonishing power.
In a matter of seconds, she defeated the will, emerging victorious and completing her advancement.
Liora smiled upon seeing this. She knew she had finally achieved her goal for coming here.
Even so, she didn’t rush to choose this future.
She was aware that time flowed differently in the two dimensions.
Since Alpha’s life would not be in any danger anytime soon, she had some time to go through the rest of the images.
She wanted to see if she could find an even more perfect future.
For example, what if there was a way for Alpha to digest the Mechanical Law and, through a series of coincidences, advance to Rank 11?
Or perhaps Alpha suddenly attained enlightenment in the state between life and death, advancing in her Devil stage instead.
Unfortunately, Liora was destined to be disappointed.
None of the following images showed the future she was looking for.
Alpha surviving was already rare. Now, adding the fact that Liora wished to find a more beneficial outcome, her options had become extremely limited.
Ultimately, Liora failed to find anything more. At most, she could find futures where Alpha would survive.
As for her suddenly becoming an Ancient Devil, it seemed impossible.
“It seems that the power of time is not completely omnipotent. If I want a certain outcome to be achieved, there has to be a timeline where it will happen.”
“I can’t alter the future based solely on my own thoughts.”
Or rather, Liora could not do so at the moment.
If she possessed the ability to make someone an Ancient Devil instantly, she would have been able to do so onto their past or future too.
Unfortunately, that was far from something she could do at the moment.
Liora sighed.
She was both disappointed and somewhat relieved.
Disappointed because she couldn’t alter the history of the Cosmic Sea as she pleased.
Relieved because this meant that Ancient Devils could not do so either in the real world.
Organizing her thoughts, Liora did not contemplate these thoughts for long. Snapping back to reality, she calmly raised her finger and pointed at one of the future images.
The droplet she had been observing all this while instantly burst.
Then under her command, its fragments gathered together once more, this time slightly different.
As Liora’s phantom left the River of Time and returned to reality, the consequences immediately became apparent.
