Chapter 1390: 1389 you’re like a tigress

At noon, Gu Kai had lunch with his father, Gu Yan.

During the meal, Gu Yan received a call from Mayor Chen. Gu Kai’s eyes flickered slightly, and he lowered his head, quietly continuing his meal.

Gu Kai couldn’t hear what Mayor Chen said over the phone. He only heard his father, Gu Yan, reply, “I’m not very clear about the Wei Jingshan matter. I’m outside right now and haven’t returned to the hospital.”

Gu Kai’s hand paused midair as he was picking up food. He looked up, his gaze calm as he fixed his eyes on Gu Yan.

Gu Yan motioned for him to focus on eating and not to concern himself.

Gu Kai smiled faintly and continued eating leisurely.

After Gu Yan hung up the phone, Gu Kai finally asked, “Dad, what did he say to you?”

“He asked me what’s going on with Wei Jingshan.”

Gu Yan furrowed his brow, his tone carrying a trace of gloom.

If it weren’t for *that man* last time, he wouldn’t have allowed Wei Jingshan to stay at Kangning Hospital, and maybe these subsequent incidents wouldn’t have occurred.

Gu Kai narrowed his eyes, placing his chopsticks down on the plate in front of him. The corners of his thin lips curled slightly as he asked, “What did he say?”

“He didn’t say much, just asked what’s going on with Wei Jingshan.” Gu Yan’s expression remained indifferent.

Gu Kai let out a snort, his deep voice laced with derision, “This time he can’t pin it on our Kangning Hospital. If he’s going to pin it on someone, it should be the police. Dad, let me be clear: even if *that man* has some way of getting Wei Jingshan out, she absolutely cannot step foot in Kangning Hospital again.”

By the end of his statement, the sarcastic smile on Gu Kai’s lips was replaced with an icy sharpness, and his strikingly handsome facial features took on a chilling edge.

“You’re overestimating the importance of Wei Jingshan. He’s just inquiring. Given what she’s done this time, he wouldn’t risk his reputation to get her out.”

Wei Jingshan was merely an orphan he sponsored.

If there wasn’t any special relationship beyond that, he certainly wouldn’t help her again. After all, this wasn’t like the previous incident, which could be downplayed or blown up depending on the angle.

Gu Kai sneered, raising an eyebrow handsomely as he said, “Not necessarily. Wei Jingshan’s nerve—daring to promise Qian Songnan that she’d get him out—is no joke.”

“Ah Kai, don’t speak recklessly.”

Gu Yan was alarmed and glanced around, immediately reining in his expression and sternly lowering his tone.

“Dad, I didn’t say anything at all.” Gu Kai shrugged casually. “I’ll ask Bai Yiyi later if she wants to file charges against Wei Jingshan. Fang Zhiwei definitely won’t let Wei Jingshan off the hook. And neither will that letter-writer she nearly killed.”

“Hmm, go check with Bai Yiyi. Last time, she was involved, and this time, it’s connected to her again. While all of this is Wei Jingshan’s own doing, these things always need to be balanced out.”

Gu Yan slowed his tone, his eyes deep and contemplative.

Gu Kai understood the meaning behind his father’s words. Call it youthful impulsiveness or lack of diplomacy—frankly, he didn’t care to excuse Wei Jingshan this time either.

As for managing “balanced relationships,” he was no longer the director of Kangning Hospital, so he could feign ignorance.

“Dad, I’m done eating. Enjoy the rest.”

Gu Kai stood, tossed out this parting comment, and walked away without waiting to see if Gu Yan had more to say. He strode out of the dining area.

Gu Yan frowned slightly as he watched Gu Kai’s retreating figure. He sighed and sank into deep thought.

After work in the afternoon, Bai Yiyi got a call from Gu Kai.

He told her not to drive—he was waiting for her at the factory gates.

Due to the recent bouts of rain, the weather was especially cold. When Bai Yiyi exited the office building and looked toward the factory gate, she immediately spotted Gu Kai’s Maybach parked beside the electric gate.

Snowflakes swirled in the wind. By the afternoon, a thick new layer of snow had piled up over what had been cleared at noon. The icy wind slashing her face felt like blades cutting into her skin.

She instinctively clutched her trench coat tighter, shoved her hands into her pockets, and stepped onto the pristine snow.

When she reached the gate, Gu Kai emerged from the car, walked around to the passenger side, and opened the door for her.

Bai Yiyi jogged a few quick steps to the car and climbed in swiftly. After closing the door for her, Gu Kai walked back around and settled into the driver’s seat.

“It’s so much warmer in here. This cold could kill someone.”

Once inside, Bai Yiyi was enveloped in warmth. The cold-induced frown on her face vanished, replaced with a smile as she let out a long breath of relief.

Gu Kai’s gaze flickered as he watched her unguarded smile and then leaned toward her.

The next second, Bai Yiyi immediately became alert and instinctively leaned toward the car door. Her reaction made Gu Kai frown irritably and ask, “Do I look like I have the plague or something?”

“I didn’t mean it that way… I’ll handle the seatbelt myself.”

Bai Yiyi explained reflexively. Catching sight of his hand reaching out, she glanced at the overhead seatbelt and forced a smile, embarrassed.

“…”

Gu Kai parted his lips to speak but held back.

Retracting his hand, he straightened up, buckled his own seatbelt, and silently started the engine before driving off.

“Drive slower—it’s snowing.”

Feeling a tiny pang of guilt over her exaggerated reaction earlier, Bai Yiyi noticed Gu Kai’s grim expression. The oppressive atmosphere in the car, a result of his irritation, prompted her to press her lips together and attempt to make conversation.

“There’s sufficient evidence now regarding Wei Jingshan sending photos and letters to Fang Zhiwei in your name. The police took her away this morning. Fang Zhiwei even beat her up on the spot—she looks like a swollen pig now. Do you want to press charges against her?”

“I want to press charges.”

As soon as Wei Jingshan was mentioned, Bai Yiyi’s face turned icy. Her reply was resolute and immediate.

Gu Kai paused slightly, turning to glance at her. “You’re not going to think it through?”

“Why should I think about it? Are you trying to stop me? She faked those photos to ruin my reputation and spread lies…”

“That’s not what I meant.”

Seeing her anger, Gu Kai immediately cut her off and clarified—it was vital to make sure she didn’t misunderstand.

“Then what do you mean?”

Bai Yiyi stared at Gu Kai coldly, her delicate brows knitted tightly. Her pretty face bore an unmistakable expression of anger.

It was clear that if Gu Kai opposed or suggested forgiving Wei Jingshan, she would turn against him on the spot.

Gu Kai narrowed his eyes slightly, then broke into a sudden smile.

“What are you laughing at?”

“I’m laughing at how you look right now—like a tigress. If I said one word against you, you’d pounce and rip me to shreds.”

Hearing this, Bai Yiyi raised her hand in surprise to touch her face. Was she really that fierce? She’d only been a little upset.

“Take a good look in the mirror and tell me if you don’t look like a tigress. Bai Yiyi, you’re an educated woman—no matter how angry you get or how determined you are to press charges against Wei Jingshan, you should still maintain your poise and elegance.”

Pausing momentarily as she actually checked her reflection, Gu Kai smirked and teased, “I’d prefer not to see two women turning into tigresses in one day. That would completely ruin my impressions.”

Bai Yiyi scoffed coldly. “Looks like someone’s already completely ruined your ideal of elegance, huh?”
