Chapter 1395: If it's before 1394, I'm not trying to scare you.
Chapter 1395: If it’s before 1394, I’m not trying to scare you.
“I’ll call her now and ask if she’s at home.”
Wen Ran thought for a moment, then took out her phone and dialed Fang Zhiwei’s number. Her father, Gu Yan, had recently told her to check in on Fang Zhiwei when she had time.
Because Professor Fang had been friends with Gu Yan before his death and had donated his body to medical science after passing, Gu Yan had asked Wen Ran to look after Fang Zhiwei out of respect and decency.
But she’d been so busy lately that she’d completely forgotten about it.
Bai Yiyi nodded slightly, her gaze warm as she looked at Wen Ran.
The phone rang a few times before it was picked up, but the voice on the other end wasn’t Fang Zhiwei’s—it was the Fang family’s housekeeper. “Hello, Miss Wen.”
“Auntie, where’s Sister Wei?”
A trace of surprise flashed in Wen Ran’s eyes as she asked gently.
“Miss just went to bed, Miss Wen. I was just thinking of calling you, and then your call came.”
“Auntie, is something wrong?” A thoughtful look flickered in Wen Ran’s eyes as she asked softly.
From the housekeeper’s tone, it sounded like something was indeed wrong. Otherwise, she wouldn’t have mentioned wanting to call her.
Sure enough, after a moment of hesitation, the housekeeper’s worried voice came through. “Miss Wen, I think our Miss might be suffering from depression. Ever since Professor Fang passed away, her mental state has been terrible. Her temper has gotten worse, and nothing about her feels right anymore.”
“Auntie, perhaps Sister Wei is just grieving. It might not be as serious as you think.”
“It’s not just me imagining things. I overheard her on the phone, saying she doesn’t need treatment. And later, when I followed her, I saw her going to a psychology clinic.”
Hearing this, Wen Ran furrowed her brows. “Auntie, don’t worry. I’ll come over to your house soon. If Sister Wei’s condition is really serious, I’ll persuade her to seek psychological treatment.”
“Miss Wen, thank you so much. Our Miss doesn’t have many friends to begin with. Honestly, she’s been so isolated since her breakup with Doctor Gu. She barely has any interaction with her old friends anymore. And now with Professor Fang gone, she’s completely alone…”
It was clear the housekeeper genuinely cared about Fang Zhiwei.
By the end, Wen Ran could even hear the slight choke in her voice.
After offering a few more words of comfort, Wen Ran hung up the phone.
“Yiyi, you might be right. Fang Zhiwei could be suffering from depression.” Wen Ran’s brow knitted lightly, her voice carrying a heavy tone.
“Then go check on her. I’ll stay here. When those little ones wake up, I’ll watch over them.” Bai Yiyi felt a complicated mix of emotions about Fang Zhiwei.
It was probably because of Gu Kai.
She didn’t hate Fang Zhiwei, but the idea of being friends with her felt awkward. And now that Fang Zhiwei’s father’s death was partially related to her, in some way.
She and Fang Zhiwei could never be friends. From now on, she could only be Fang Zhiwei’s enemy.
Perhaps one day, if Fang Zhiwei could let go and move on, there might be no more hatred.
“Professor Fang was friends with my dad, and he donated his body to medical science. My dad told me to take care of Sister Wei. Don’t mind how she treats you now. One day, she’ll figure it out.”
Time is the best medicine in this world.
No matter how deep the wounds, no matter how painful the memories, they would eventually fade in the river of time.
Wen Ran herself was proof of this. The pain and hatred of the past were now things she could talk about with serene detachment. It wasn’t that she was unusually kind—it was simply that those feelings had faded.
Her heart was fully occupied by the people she loved. She didn’t want to waste time dwelling on people and matters she disliked…
“Hopefully. It’s not like I can stop her from hating or resenting me anyway.”
She decided not to overthink it.
After Wen Ran left, Bai Yiyi sat alone on the living room sofa. Feeling quite bored, she went upstairs to the children’s room. The four little ones were all sleeping soundly, with no sign of waking up to play with her.
Bai Yiyi lingered in the children’s room for a while before walking out and going back downstairs to sit on the living room sofa. She dialed Gu Kai’s number.
No matter how much she didn’t want to get in touch with Gu Kai, she still had to make this call.
He was probably busy because the ringtone kept going without anyone answering.
Bai Yiyi pursed her lips, mumbled a complaint, and then heard footsteps coming from the entryway.
Alongside them came the sound of a phone vibrating.
Startled, she immediately stood up from the sofa and looked toward the entryway, her gaze meeting a pair of deep, dark eyes.
The man she hadn’t seen in a week was suddenly standing before her just as she was calling him.
Bai Yiyi was so startled her heartbeat instantly went out of rhythm.
She cursed herself silently for reacting so poorly, her gaze flickering before she lowered her eyes and quickly ended the call.
“I ran into Ranran at the door. She said you were here.”
Gu Kai’s gaze remained fixed on Bai Yiyi, a deep intensity flashing in his eyes as he walked toward the sofa with long strides.
His tall frame loomed over her, and even standing, Bai Yiyi felt suppressed by his presence.
“What do you need from me?”
Gu Kai seemed to be in a good mood today. Unlike the last two or three times they had run into each other when he’d given her a cold, stone-like face and indifferent eyes.
He sat down on the sofa, grabbed an apple, leaned his tall frame into the cushion, stretched out his long legs, and took a crisp bite, his expression cool as he looked at her.
Bai Yiyi had planned to call him, but she hadn’t expected to end up face-to-face instead.
She had thought it’d feel more natural to say it over the phone.
Now, facing him, she felt an inexplicable pressure surrounding her. She couldn’t help but feel a little nervous, especially remembering how Gu Kai had gotten angry over this topic the last time.
She didn’t speak right away, taking a moment to mentally prepare herself and carefully choose her words to say them as casually as possible: “I’m heading back to the countryside tomorrow to spend the New Year with my mom. If you’re busy, Tongtong can stay with Ranran. If not, you can spend the New Year with Tongtong.”
Gu Kai’s good mood was instantly ruined by Bai Yiyi’s words, the sharp contours of his handsome face darkening.
His gaze on her deepened, becoming as unfathomable as an abyss, enough to unsettle anyone.
Bai Yiyi noticed his silence and the way he stared at her intensely. She pressed her lips together and continued, “Last year, you were overseas, and I spent the New Year with Tongtong. This year, let her spend it with you, and also with Director Gu.”
“When are you coming back?”
Gu Kai’s question left Bai Yiyi at a loss for words.
She hadn’t planned on coming back.
Even though, in the past, she’d tried, only to come running back to G City after ten days because she missed Tongtong too much, this time she had convinced herself it wasn’t abandonment—just living separately for a while. She could come visit Tongtong anytime.
Seeing her lower her gaze and avoid meeting his eyes, Gu Kai narrowed his own slightly, his lips curving into a cold smile. “Bai Yiyi, what I said to you before wasn’t just empty words to scare you.”
