Chapter 1394: 1393 one person goes back
The Spring Festival was approaching day by day, and the year-end work was always busy and hectic.
Although Bai Yiyi was there to help, nearing the end of the year, Wen Jin didn’t recruit a new secretary. She just had Jing Xiaocha work alongside Bai Yiyi to help share some of her workload.
Tongtong spent every day at Wen Ran’s home, playing with the three little ones, which saved Bai Yiyi a lot of worry.
Since that day, after Bai Yiyi had bitten Gu Kai’s lip and he saw Zhang Siming send her home, their relationship had become as distant as strangers.
Gu Kai was so busy at the end of the year that he didn’t even have time to take a break. When he came to see Tongtong, it was always at Wen Ran’s home, and he only ran into Bai Yiyi two or three times.
On the twenty-eighth day of the twelfth lunar month, Bai Yiyi brought Tongtong to play at Wen Ran’s home. With Mo Xiuchen out for social engagements, she ended up staying there for lunch.
After lunch, the four little ones played for a while, then started yawning one by one, climbed into bed, and obediently went down for their afternoon nap.
“Ranran, I’m heading back to the countryside tomorrow.”
Once the four little ones had fallen asleep, Wen Ran and Bai Yiyi went downstairs and sat on the sofa in the living room. Bai Yiyi finally spoke.
Upon hearing this, Wen Ran was momentarily stunned, then looked at Bai Yiyi with surprise. “Yiyi, do you mean you’re going back alone to the countryside to celebrate the New Year?”
What about Tongtong?
Judging from her tone, it sounded like she planned to go alone.
Bai Yiyi nodded slightly and forced a smile. “I’m going back alone. A few days ago, I called my mom, and she sounded like she had a cold. All these years, we’ve rarely been apart. Now she’s living alone in the countryside, and I’m worried.”
The countryside was where Bai Yuqin raised Bai Yiyi when she was young. Later, from junior high through college, Bai Yuqin lived a transient life, following Bai Yiyi wherever she went to school.
After Bai Yiyi started working, Bai Yuqin became her dedicated caregiver.
“In that case, why don’t you bring Aunt Bai to G City and have her go to the hospital for a check-up? She’s getting older and her health isn’t great. Living alone is certainly concerning.”
Recently, Bai Yiyi rarely mentioned Bai Yuqin in front of Wen Ran.
Not wanting to make things awkward for everyone, Wen Ran still suggested with concern when she heard Bai Yuqin was unwell.
Bai Yiyi immediately declined. “No need. It’s just a cold, no serious health issues. I’ll go back to check on her and spend the New Year with her.”
“Does my brother know?”
Wen Ran hesitated for a moment before asking softly.
She knew Bai Yiyi’s relationship with her brother was tense, with countless issues standing between them…
“I haven’t told him yet. I was planning to call him later. I’m not bringing Tongtong back; she can spend the New Year with her grandfather.”
“Yiyi, Tongtong will miss you.”
Though Tongtong spent her days playing at Wen Ran’s house, Bai Yiyi would pick her up every evening.
After all, Bai Yiyi was still Tongtong’s mother.
Bai Yiyi laughed lightly in an attempt to sound carefree. “Ranran, I sometimes feel like Tongtong is closer to you than to me. I only get to spend evenings with her, while you’re with her all day.”
“Yiyi, are you planning to leave and never come back?”
Wen Ran interrupted Bai Yiyi, raising her brows slightly as she gazed at her. “Tongtong may come here every day to play, but you’re still her mother. Even when you work late, she’s always waiting for you. If you really leave and don’t return, she’ll be heartbroken.”
Bai Yiyi’s chest tightened.
Wen Ran’s words made her involuntarily picture Tongtong’s sad expression, her heart gripped by an agonizing pain that felt as fresh as the hurt she had experienced not long ago.
She pressed her lips together and said softly, “Ranran, I know Tongtong will be sad. But I don’t want to stay in G City like this forever.”
“You don’t want to be involved with my brother.” Wen Ran sighed softly.
Bai Yiyi’s face changed slightly, her gaze flickering as she lowered her eyes.
Wen Ran smiled faintly again. “Yiyi, my brother was able to let go of his hatred for Fu Jingyi. Someday, he’ll also be able to let go of what happened with Aunt Bai in the past. As for Professor Fang, that has nothing to do with you or my brother. That’s a debt owed by Wei Jingshan. She’s already been punished, and Fang Zhiwei won’t blame you anymore.”
Bai Yiyi remained silent, her brows and eyes showing a faint sadness.
Some things aren’t as easy to let go of as simply saying so.
Nor could one entirely ignore them just because they’re not directly connected.
Ever since Professor Fang passed away, Fang Zhiwei had been mentally unstable. Afterwards, at the hospital, she had beaten Wei Jingshan and later forced her to kneel and apologize at her father’s gravestone.
A few days ago, Bai Yiyi had encountered Fang Zhiwei crossing the road. She had been so distracted she almost got hit by a car without realizing it.
It was Bai Yiyi who stepped forward and pulled her back.
When Fang Zhiwei turned around and saw her, the cold indifference in her eyes was something Bai Yiyi still remembered vividly.
“Sister Wei, watch out for the cars.”
Though Bai Yiyi hesitated for a moment, she had still spoken out of concern.
“Bai Yiyi, I don’t need your fake good intentions,” Fang Zhiwei said coldly, forcibly shaking her off.
Bai Yiyi frowned slightly, wanting to say something, but then heard someone calling out behind her: “Sister Fang.”
She turned around to see a young woman in a white coat coming out of a psychology clinic.
Fang Zhiwei also turned to look at the person. When her gaze swept past Bai Yiyi, her expression shifted slightly. She heard the other woman ask, “Sister Fang, do you need me to arrange for someone to send you home?”
…
Thinking back, Bai Yiyi subconsciously clasped her hands tightly. She hadn’t mentioned her encounter with Fang Zhiwei to anyone.
Fang Zhiwei didn’t ask anyone to accompany her; she left on her own.
Later, Bai Yiyi purposely passed by that psychology clinic again. Though she didn’t see Fang Zhiwei, she couldn’t stop wondering what Fang Zhiwei was doing there.
“Ranran, there’s something I haven’t told you because it’s Fang Zhiwei’s private matter.”
Bai Yiyi spoke hesitantly.
Wen Ran looked at her in confusion. “What is it?”
“Around ten days ago, I ran into Fang Zhiwei by the roadside. She was so distracted she didn’t even notice the cars, almost got hit, and I had to pull her back. But she was very cold toward me, saying she didn’t need my fake concern.”
“You mean Sister Wei still harbors resentment toward you.”
Wen Ran blinked, her brow furrowing slightly.
It seemed Fang Zhiwei held an ongoing grudge against Bai Yiyi. After all, Bai Yiyi’s relationship with Gu Kai was there in plain sight, even if Fang Zhiwei didn’t know all the details.
As a woman, it was hard to avoid feelings of jealousy.
“It’s not just resentment against me. At the time, the intersection we were at was outside a psychology clinic. A young woman came out and asked Fang Zhiwei if she needed someone to send her home.”
Wen Ran’s expression changed subtly as she said worriedly, “Sister Wei is seeing a psychologist? I haven’t seen Sister Wei at all recently. Since you mentioned this, I should make time to check on her.”
“Mm, initially I thought it was Fang Zhiwei’s personal matter, so I didn’t say anything to you.”
After pondering over it for days, Bai Yiyi decided it was best to let Wen Ran know.
