Chapter 1398: Take someone home with you in 1397
In the living room on the first floor of the villa
When all the chicks were “eaten,” leaving Bai Yiyi alone, she looked dejected, completely losing her mood to play.
Gu Kai laughed triumphantly, bent down to pick up Tongtong, who was lying on the ground, and whispered in her ear, “Tongtong, go comfort your mom. Look at how sad she is—it’s so pitiful.”
Tongtong looked up at Gu Kai and seriously said, “Tongtong was eaten.”
Gu Kai’s mouth twitched sharply. “Tongtong, the game is over now. You’re not a chick anymore, you’re Tongtong again.”
“Oh.”
Tongtong blinked a few times, her little face lighting up with a radiant smile. She seemingly felt thrilled to be “alive” again—not just a motionless chick that had been eaten. She ran to Bai Yiyi, grabbed her wrists with both hands, and exclaimed, “Mom, Tongtong came back to life!”
The group of little ones was already very adept at playing the Eagle-and-Chicks game. Earlier, after being “eaten,” they all lay motionless on the Persian carpet, pretending to be “dead.”
Now, hearing Tongtong declare she had come back to life, they all opened their eyes. Ziyi, the quickest-witted of them, rolled over and got up from the carpet. He looked up at Tongtong clutching Bai Yiyi, then glanced at Xinxin and Momo, who were still lying motionless nearby.
“Momo, Xinxin.”
Ziyi hesitated for a moment, stepped forward, and reached out to pull Momo up.
After helping Momo up, he went to help Xinxin.
Gu Kai, the “full and satisfied” eagle, strolled over to the sofa and sank into it, watching as the group of chicks gathered around Bai Yiyi, each one trying to comfort her.
Bai Yiyi glared at him hatefully and hugged the four little ones, saying, “Next time, I’ll definitely protect you all and make sure you won’t be eaten by the eagle.”
“Uncle, bad.”
Ziyi pouted, pointing at Gu Kai, who was almost reclining on the sofa.
“Bad.”
Once Ziyi spoke up, Momo and Xinxin chimed in too. After saying it, they all giggled uncontrollably.
Tongtong blinked curiously. Seeing her younger siblings calling her dad “bad,” she hesitated slightly. After all, she was a year older than them, and the person they were talking about was her dad. She hesitated for a long while before saying, “Bad eagle!”
Bai Yiyi was amused by the little ones’ comments and laughed, “Tongtong, even your brothers and sisters are calling your dad bad. Why don’t you say ‘Dad is bad,’ and instead say ‘Bad eagle’?”
“Dad isn’t bad.”
Tongtong blinked her clear eyes and said earnestly, “The eagle is bad.”
Gu Kai burst into laughter, stood up, and moved onto their sofa. “Tongtong is still the best. Ziyi, you little rascal, how dare you call Uncle bad? Do you want me to spank your bottom?”
“Dad!”
Hearing Gu Kai’s threat, Ziyi suddenly spun around and shouted towards the front entrance, “Dad!”
As soon as Gu Kai turned his head to look toward the front entrance, Ziyi bolted away.
However, in the next moment, he tripped over the sofa leg, falling onto the carpet and provoking Gu Kai’s unrestrained laughter.
“You’re still laughing!”
Bai Yiyi shot him a sharp look, rushed forward to help Ziyi up, and asked with concern, “Ziyi, did you hurt yourself?”
Ziyi cast a resentful glance at the sofa where Gu Kai was laughing uproariously, pouting his lips but stubbornly refusing to cry. He reached behind himself to rub his bumped backside.
After Bai Yiyi helped him stand, he walked a few steps away. Feeling he was now safely out of harm’s way, he turned back around, grinned widely, and shouted, “Bad Uncle!”
“I just got back and hear Ziyi calling Gu Kai bad—what did you do to bully my son now?”
From the entrance, Mo Xiuchen’s voice suddenly rang out.
Hearing his voice, Ziyi’s eyes lit up and he immediately turned and dashed toward him.
“Dad, Mom!”
Ziyi’s sweet, babyish voice was filled with excitement.
Mo Xiuchen bent down, scooped him up in one motion, and asked with a smile, “Ziyi, how did Uncle bully you? Tell Dad.”
“Xiuchen.”
Wen Ran called softly.
Mo Xiuchen flashed her a smile, carrying Ziyi with big strides toward the sofa. Momo and Xinxin, seeing their dad holding Ziyi, hugged Wen Ran’s legs at once.
“Babies, did you miss Mom?”
Wen Ran held each of their little hands and walked over to sit on the sofa.
“Dad isn’t bad.”
At a critical moment, Tongtong still sided with her dad. Hearing her words, Mo Xiuchen raised his brow and said, “Gu Kai, you’ve got some nerve?”
“Of course! Tongtong is my daughter, not like Ziyi, that little liar.”
Thinking about how Ziyi tricked him earlier, Gu Kai couldn’t help but feel that the little guy, who was still so small, was already learning manipulation—of all things—from his scheming dad.
It must have been taught by Xiuchen.
“Bad.”
Nestled in Mo Xiuchen’s arms, Ziyi stared at Gu Kai with zero fear.
Wen Ran watched the big and small pair’s confrontation and couldn’t help but laugh, “Brother, don’t scare Ziyi.”
“It’s not me scaring him—it’s him scaring me. If you don’t believe me, ask Yiyi how Ziyi tricked me just now.”
“Yiyi?”
Wen Ran’s eyes sparkled with an inexplicable smile as she glanced at Bai Yiyi.
Receiving the meaningful look in her smile, Bai Yiyi slightly stiffened, forcing a less-than-natural grin. “Earlier, someone threatened to spank Ziyi’s bottom, and Ziyi shouted ‘Dad’ toward the entrance. That someone foolishly fell for it, and while they turned to look, Ziyi bolted away.”
“That someone, haha…”
Wen Ran laughed mischievously, adding to Gu Kai’s frustration. “Brother, how can you be so gullible? Yiyi, take Tongtong and ‘that someone’ home now. It’s already dark. We won’t keep you for dinner tonight, alright?”
“Ranran, you’re so stingy.”
Bai Yiyi protested helplessly, hiding her self-consciousness.
“Let me be stingy just this once. Yiyi, tomorrow Mo Xiuchen and I are taking the three little ones on vacation, so we can’t see you off. Either let my brother drop you at the station or have him drive you home. We’ll meet after the New Year.”
Wen Ran stood as she spoke, visibly ushering them out.
She deliberately mentioned the lack of a send-off tomorrow, just to see whether Bai Yiyi and her brother had progressed as she suspected.
Sure enough, after hearing her remark, Bai Yiyi’s expression changed slightly, and Gu Kai coughed awkwardly before standing up as well.
“Xiuchen, be sure to take care of Ranran,” Gu Kai said, then picked up Tongtong, motioning with his eyes for Bai Yiyi to follow him home.
“Not seeing you out!”
Standing by the sofa, Wen Ran cheerfully called out.
She clearly had no intention of walking them to the door.
Gu Kai grabbed Tongtong’s hand and waved toward her while walking ahead of Bai Yiyi toward the entrance. Bai Yiyi turned back to Wen Ran and Mo Xiuchen to say, “Ranran, Mo General, Happy New Year in advance.”
Stepping out of the living room, a blast of cold air instantly greeted them.
Bai Yiyi instinctively shrank her neck against the chill.
Up ahead, Gu Kai adjusted Tongtong’s hat and turned to look at Bai Yiyi. “Cold?”
“Just a little.”
Bai Yiyi stuffed her hands into her pockets. The nighttime temperature seemed to have dropped even further.
Gu Kai extended a long arm toward her. “Put this on.”
Only then did Bai Yiyi notice that his coat wasn’t on his body but draped over his arm.
