Chapter 1466: 1465 Of course it’s true

“Mm, just don’t ask her directly.”

Mo Xiuchen was afraid his earlier words made Wen Ran uncomfortable. He freed one hand from the steering wheel and lovingly ruffled her hair.

Wen Ran responded with a smile, “I’ll call An Lin.”

Just today, her brother and Yiyi registered their marriage. She wanted to share the good news with An Lin and, in the meantime, probe what exactly was going on between her and Qin Mu.

Mo Xiuchen withdrew his hand, grasped the steering wheel again, his eyes focused on the road ahead.

The phone rang a few times before An Lin’s voice came through, “Hey, Ranran.”

“An Lin, I have some good news for you.” Wen Ran’s voice was light and joyful, making Mo Xiuchen beside her unconsciously soften his eyes with a gentle smile.

Wen Ran glanced sideways at Mo Xiuchen, listening to An Lin’s curious question, “What’s the good news?”

Her brows and eyes were filled with smiles, “My brother and Yiyi have registered their marriage.”

“Ah, really?” An Lin seemed incredulous, her raised voice full of surprise.

Wen Ran chuckled softly, “An Lin, of course it’s true. Would I lie to you? If you don’t believe me, you can call Qin Mu. He was there during lunch today.”

“Ranran, it’s not that I don’t believe you, I’m just too surprised. Ah Kai and Yiyi have finally come to fruition, I’m so happy for them. No way, I need to call Yiyi and personally congratulate her.” An Lin subtly avoided mentioning Qin Mu.

A voice filled with laughter, betraying no unusual emotions. Yet, over the phone, Wen Ran couldn’t tell if An Lin was forcing herself to smile.

On the other end, she was actually feeling down, her bare face appearing exhausted.

The good news Wen Ran shared only brought a fleeting warmth to her heart, which was soon replaced by deep bitterness.

Perhaps, she really shouldn’t have registered her marriage with Qin Mu back then.

A marriage without mutual affection is like a melon forcibly twisted; it won’t be sweet.

“An Lin, when are you coming to G City? Those little ones miss you.”

The words of hopeful yearning from Wen Ran echoed in her ears. An Lin pursed her lips and said faintly, “In a while. My dad has been too busy lately, and my mom’s health isn’t too good. I want to spend more time with her.”

After hanging up, An Lin’s gaze swept around the master bedroom, her eyes lingering on the wedding photo on the wall for a long time. Finally, she pressed her lips together and got down to organize her clothes.

Having been away for two days, Qin Mu, she felt she no longer needed to stay here.

Outside, there came a knock on the door, “An Lin, can I come in?”

It was her mother-in-law’s voice. Upon hearing it, An Lin halted her packing and walked over to open the door.

“Mom, please come in.”

An Lin opened the door, politely invited Qin’s mother in, speaking as she stepped aside to let her enter.

Qin’s mother paused her gaze on her face for half a second, then looked at the suitcase placed in front of the bed, a smile appearing on her face, “An Lin, are you going to G City to find Ah Mu?”

An Lin’s eyes flickered, the strained smile at the corner of her lips retreating, “Mom, I’m not going to G City, I want to go back to my house and stay with my mom for a few days.”

Upon hearing this, Qin’s mother asked in surprise, “You want to go back home to stay?”

“Mm.”

An Lin’s expression was somewhat unnatural. The Qin Family and An’s Home were so close that it only took a few minutes’ walk. Even if she went home to stay, there was no need to pack.

However, she wanted to take her belongings, rather than leave them in this house that didn’t welcome her.

Qin’s mother studied An Lin’s expression with a probing look, “An Lin, did you have a fight with Ah Mu, or is there some misunderstanding?”

Two days ago, Qin Mu returned to G City for work, and An Lin didn’t follow. Qin’s mother felt curious. She had even mentioned to her old man, wondering if An Lin and Ah Mu had quarreled.

Father Qin was busy all day and didn’t have time to care about Qin Mu and An Lin. Usually, there were no issues evident between them, so he said, “Don’t overthink it. Ah Mu is a calm and rational person. Since he’s married to An Lin, he wouldn’t throw tantrums.”

Yet now, Qin’s mother felt something was indeed happening.

An Lin forced a smile, “Mom, Ah Mu and I didn’t argue, nor was there a misunderstanding. My mom just keeps nagging me, saying I’ve gotten married and never go home to stay with her.”

“Our homes are so close, you don’t need to pack clothes just to go home.”

Qin’s mother took An Lin to the sofa and sat down, smiling gently, “An Lin, I certainly agree you should go home to accompany your mom. As for the clothes, you don’t need to pack and take them. Do it when you go to G City to find Ah Mu.”

“Alright.”

An Lin didn’t want Qin’s mother to worry, so she thought it over and agreed to her request.

Qin’s mother’s smile instantly brightened, “I’ve asked Auntie to make bird’s nest soup, come on, let’s go downstairs to taste it.”

Without waiting for An Lin to speak, Qin’s mother pulled her up and headed downstairs to eat the bird’s nest soup.

G City, Kangning Hospital

As soon as Gu Kai returned to the hospital, he was called to a patient room.

Before leaving, he told Bai Yiyi to wait for him to come back.

Bai Yiyi remained bored in his office, idly picking up a medical journal to flip through. Suddenly, the door was pushed open, making her look up in surprise.

The person entering was Gu Yan.

Unaware Bai Yiyi was there, Gu Yan entered without knocking. On seeing her, a hint of surprise crossed his eyes. Bai Yiyi was also startled.

Hurriedly standing, she forced a smile, somewhat awkwardly greeting, “Dad.”

Gu Yan smiled kindly, walking over to the sofa. His gaze skimmed the magazine she held, and he asked with a smile, “Yiyi, were there many people registering with Ah Kai today?”

Bai Yiyi nodded, then shook her head, evidently nervous facing Director Gu, “Not many people, only had to wait in line for an hour.”

Noticing her nervousness, Gu Yan nodded and spoke gently, “In the morning, Ranran called saying to have lunch at her place. I couldn’t find the time. But I’ve made time for tonight, at Yi Pin Xuan Pavilion. You and Ah Kai should go home to get your mom.”

“Alright, Dad.”

Bai Yiyi kept smiling politely. If one listened closely, they might detect the slight discomfort in her tone when she called him ‘Dad.’

It’s unclear whether it stemmed from past grievances between her parents and Gu Yan’s wife or simply because she rarely called anyone ‘Dad’ throughout her life. Thus, saying ‘Dad’ felt awkward.

At this moment, she understood more why Gu Kai couldn’t change how he referred to her mother.

It turns out changing a name isn’t easy. Calling someone with whom you had no initial connection the closest term requires repetition before it feels natural.

“Where did Ah Kai go?”

Gu Yan changed the topic, which was actually why he had come to the office.

“He went to a patient room; he said he would be back shortly. Dad, please sit and wait for him.” Bai Yiyi pointed to the nearby sofa, and after speaking, she hurriedly put down the medical journal still in her hand, intending to go pour water for Gu Yan.
